A study attempting to discover whether there is a link between cell phone use and brain damage from radiation found that cell phones neither melt nor fry nor otherwise mangle your brains, but the research inadvertently uncovered a previously unknown side effect to frequent SMS: Texting makes you stupid. Or, more accurately, it makes you sloppy.
Intellectual tests were given to 317 children aged between 11 and 14, and it was found that frequent predictive text use causes people to answer some test questions faster, but less accurately than non-text users.
Epidemiologist Professor Michael Abramson of Monash University says repeated predictive texting is training young people to act fast without thinking. "If you're used to operating in that environment and entering a couple of letters and getting the word you want, you expect to be like that," says Abramson.
I totally agree, but I imagine this particular problem will be solved very soon, when predictive text UI all become full keyboard. That's what's going to happen, after all. What the effects of everyone texting on full keyboards will be isn't known, but I predict the human race will evolve with smaller fingers, like the size of toothpicks!

Well if you give a kid a cellphone first before you give him a keyboard or a pencil on that matter. That would make them stupid. Not bec texting is bad. But the amount of text that can be input in single message is to blame, everybody will be doing shortcuts including bad grammars just to fit 160 chars in a text message. Not like this where you can have 5,000 characters where you can type all you want without worrying about fitting all you want to say in a single message.
I'm glad I'm not a recent generation, If I were, I'd be the same as any kid out there, making lots of spelling mistakes and don't even know the difference between "there" and "their" or "sense" or "since". ROFL!!!

@Fiddytree- all the other 11 year old texters...lol
As for getting smaller fingers, i think its completely plausible, in about 100,000 years (give or take a few hundred)
And i don't think you get stupider from texting, you just train your brain to react faster while thinking less. Most people who've texted for a while can do it without looking, so you can focus your brain on something else, while simultaneously texting. Sure it might not be good for school, but in the real world you need to be able to multi-task and react to things faster.

How can they tell the difference between "texting makes you stupid" and "stupid makes you text".
It's like the chicken or the egg if you ask me.

Man, the people that are stupid are the ones that gave the scientists money for this study.
I guess you couldn't figure out that texters are sloppy by all the abbrevations for everything, LOL.
