Ladies and gentlemen, let's all let Adam Sessler know that we all like melons.
Now that that's over with, this week Adam has been playing through Batman: Arkham Asylum and Shadow Complex, and it reminded him how much he loves games that include exploration. Specifically, games that encourage you to dig deep into their virtual world by rewarding you with perks, special unlockables, and weapons upgrades. You know, like Metroid. So why not take the time to explore Adam's brain and watch this week's Sessler's Soapbox.

rofl I waited all week for this episode just to see why the hell you said "I like melons."

It may sound obvious but I really respect adam because he is as passionate about games as probably most of us. I know that I believe in games as a window. Since i'm legally blind and can't be in the army or anything like that I can't do some things. In video games it's all up to the player. In call of duty i'm one of the best snipers around but in real life i'm severely near-sighted so I wouldn't be able to snipe at ALL. This is where games immerse you and make you feel enveloped in the worlds the designer creates. That's why i';m so passionate about video game design. I'm in college trying to study animation and i am not giving up on it because of what Adam and many of us believe.
Games are in my opinion becoming a more powerful medium to get a message across. (Yes, I know we've heard this A LOT lately) They are somewhere you can escape to if something in your life is not right. Video games are inspiring movies, they are inspiring books, and careers (hence my choice of career). I am legally blind but I am a graphic designer ( one of the best artists of all my friends) my point is video games helped me want to keep pursuing drawing not just for the sake of art but for the sake of video game design. Since i'm legally blind (and there is no cure as of now for what I have). I want to create video games to allow people to see the worlds and experiance things that i've imagined. I'm sorry this is so long guys and I hope you understand where i'm coming from.

i think it would be kind of cool if Microsoft and Nintendo (call me crazy) came up with a mutaul partnership, to where microsoft would be able sell games from the good old days, people would pay to to play mario bros 1. classis zelda, and classic metroid. Even the Pokemon red/blue.
this is a little crazy, but if microsoft and nintendo would be able to put aside differences and work together. First this would increase both companies sales, b/c no matter what you say, you would love to play the first mario, even on a xbox. nintendo would get a cut of the sales, and Microsoft's XBLA would seem more full. because its not a true arcade place unless you have some of these classic games, even if they are nintendo. people would be willing to buy on live, if price was reasonable. plus it would shut some of these stupid fanboys up

I know exactly what you mean about the Ghost and Goblins thing. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy were games that made me want to keep going to see the next world. Metroid Prime was another game like that those were some awesome levels and it really compelled to keep going and explore every nook and cranny to find every power up

I have always enjoyed exploring a game to it's fullest and trying to see as much of the world in the game as I can. It certainly does feel rewarding exploring the worlds of Assassin's Creed, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Grand Theft Auto IV and Mass Effect for countless hours. Discovering interesting easter eggs or secrets, put in by the developers to reward those that truly explore the world that they created to it's fullest. So thank you game developers, for creating such rich worlds that gamers can enjoy and explore.

I agree with Adam and I love games where you get to explore the beautiful words that the developers have created. Most notably, Grand Theft Auto IV, Assassin's Creed, Fable II and Fallout 3where fun games to explore. I always try to get the most out of a game when I play it and I think part of that is exploring the world that the developers spent many months creating.

Adam is to melons as Olivia is to Pie. There is nothing wrong with saying you like melons. Olivia says she likes pies like 2 or 3 times a show. So It's not really a big deal. Plus your food choice is healthier.

Should we start charging Adam for these sessions ? ha ha
Exploring is one of the best parts of gaming.

i have three points to make
1. I'm really enjoying how Sessler's Soapbox is no longer attracting the people who just want to rag on consoles or games. It has become thought invoking and something I'd care to comment on.
2. If exploding heads make you think of melons then I'd love to see you at a farmers market.
3. I'm one that loves RPG's that aren't as focused on 500 side quests and 70,000 collectibles as i am one that had great combat and an intriguing story that makes you not want to put down the controller. I only consider myself to have been a "hardcore" gamer for 3 years now so even JRPG's seem fresh to me. I love games like Fallout 3 and Fable 2 but the one I'm most partial to is Eternal Sonata. It may have only gotten decent reviews and was seen as your normal JRPG, but I loved playing that game. It had such eye pleasing visuals that sometimes I'd stop just to enjoy all the work the developer put into it. It only took me some 20-25 hours to beat but that's because there weren't many side quests or backtracking; and I loved that. Like Adam said, It wasn't about the achievements to me, i just wanted to see what was waiting for me when i beat the next boss or solve the next (relatively easy) puzzle. My emotional attachment to the characters was just a bonus that kept me moving forward actually anticipating the next cut scene. When I finished I knew that I'd just played a great game that I'd remember for the rest of my life because it changed the way I think about all games.
I just want to thank you Adam for bringing up that point and hope you bring up other subjects that matter to me (such as where the line is drawn between a bad games and unoriginal ones *wink wink*) and hope you keep up the good work. Oh, and if you're wondering why I'm trying to keep such good grammar it's because I'm trying to get ready for school.

You said "clues the Riddler leaves behind". Was that another mis-speak? Or is The Riddler in this game too? That'd be freaking awesome! (voiced by Jim Carrey for extra campyness)

I don't like melons. They have almost no flavor, and I'm never in that much need of a source of water that isn't, you know, an actual glass/bottle of water. I've actually had cactus before and they have more flavor than watermelons.
Oh, and exploration is fun in video games. It was especially the best part of MMO's. I don't know how many days I spent just running around and exploring in EQ.

Adam, its ok, we think your funny even when you do say stupid stuff. Not a big deal, no one is blaming you or anything. You still ROK! m/, keep it up.
sukTHEfacc
it's so sad how much adam compares shadow complex to metroid.
i highly doubt any xbot has actually played thru any of the great metroids...
once again (like with all the RARE games), MS has ripped off the old school Nintendo way.
Nintendo deserves a game like SC, not Xbox....actually, anything BUT the xbox deserves it

Adam,
I agree, exploring is one of the most rewarding things about a video game. I loved Fallout 3 more for the exploration and scavenging and less for the exploding melons in VATS (which was cool, mind you).
I actually like the handholding in the newer generation games in terms of finding the collectibles. Infamous for example; the blips on the radar for the blast shards. As a contrast, the first Jak and Dexter game, hunting down all the golden eggs or whatever they were called for the alternate ending. So tedious for like a 10 second ending of a gate opening.
Don't remember the original Zelda or Metroid being all that hard actually. Unless you are talking about second quest, that kicked my ass.
g4fan247
I agree with everyone above about exploring in open world games. One of the
main reasons I like open world games is finding new ares to explore and finding better weapons.
