This is a bizarre one. Activision has just announced a limited time offer to gamers who purchase Guitar Hero 5. If you buy Guitar Hero 5, Activision will send you a free copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen. No strings attached. You just need register online with a code in the Guitar Hero 5 manual or send some paperwork in the mail. Either way, Activision's offering you a free copy of the game.

The question is why. Is Activision afraid of the impact The Beatles: Rock Band might have on music games sales this holiday season? Will their own DJ Hero distract buyers from picking up their second and third-tier music games? There's less money to go around these days.

I think this is a great deal and it is the push I needed to buy GH5. I would not have bought Van Halen and I would have just rented GH5, so this is a really good move on their part. They're going to make some money that they wouldn't have previously had. Plus, I'll get 2 good music games for the price of 1.

You guys GH5 will blow the beattles rock band out of the competition. You will get 85 songs from GH5, transfer the 85 from WT, transfer 55 form SH plus the 45 from VAN halen if you pre order and don't forget the dlc lets call this about 20. So with GH5 you get about thats 290 Songs, plus the new gameplay, fetaures, improved graphics, better guitar. DAM count ME in For guitar hero YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANY THING rock band can do Guitar hero can do better.

I would like to get some music games, as The Beatles one will be my first on my Xbox (Haven't had any since GH2 on my old PS2, which I sold.)
Maybe... Maybe.. I don't know. It would probably be wise of me to save the $60 for something else.

this is a slap in the face to harmonix...not only do you get gh5(+wt content) but you also get ghvh...a game that will actually be challenging...i bet the first bracket of that game is harder than anything on the beatles rock band...have fun singing you 3 part harmonies beatles fans...in the meantime ill actually be having fun

Ok in reality the games are worth $30 each and let's not forget that GH has,...wait for it,...Jeff Beck, and Santana, AND King Crimson! I like RB more, but this changes things.

the reason is probably because they pissed off alot of van halen fans by not including Michael Anthony or Sammy Hagar in the game and now they are trying to save face. Granted the die-hard halen fans always shun Hagar but they did some great songs with him. I was excited about GH:VH until I heard that news and saw the setlist. Now.....ehhh who cares? Gimme the Beatles:RB anyday.

the real question is why... van halen? dont get me wrong, they have some great songs, but do they really deserve their own game?

The competeition is heating up between EA and Activision, and I think Activision is trying it's hardest to do some serious damage to the Rock Band franchise. This could also be Activision very concerned that the sales numbers are going to be pretty flat with GHVH and are willing to bundle it just so they can say to their stock holders that a high enough number of units were moved to justify them making GHVH a retail game and not DLC. Regardless, it reeks of despiration and competitiveness.

Wow they are this desperate huh...ok then well I'm still not going to buy it I haven't bought a music game since Rock Band 2 and I don't plan on buying another anytime soon. At this point the whole genre can just die out for all I care.

I had no interest in GH5 until this announcement. I prefer RB, but GH:WT was OK (song list sucked in my opinion). BUT, anytime you can get a BOGO (= buy one, get one) deal, you have to take advantage of that!
However, I will say that the market is TOO SATURATED with Guitar Hero stuff...
