New Super Mario Bros. Wii, E3 2009

Despite its declining hardware sales and a rough economy, Nintendo is still confident that is has blockbuster titles in its catalog. In fact, the company believes it has three blockbusters: Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros., and Wii Fit Plus. According to Gamasutra, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes that these titles will sell 10-million units each (worldwide). Iwata said:

"These three titles have already been available for hands-on demonstrations at E3 this year. They were highly evaluated by most of those who actually tried them. Distributors also gave feedback like 'The key player of this holiday season will be Nintendo as expected.'"

If you factor in current economic conditions, Iwata's estimate might seem aggressive, but if you consider the ridiculous installed base of the Wii, the numbers sound perfectly reasonable. Wii Sports Resort is already selling at a hot pace and I have no doubt that Wii Fit Plus will follow suit. As for New Super Mario Bros., I'm confident it will sell in Japan, but the game has been receiving a lot of backlash in America, with enthusiasts complaining about Nintendo selling the same game over and over again. Then again, it's frickin' Mario, so no matter how many people are complaining, it will likely sell millions.

Let's play armchair analyst for a bit. What do you think of Iwata's 10-million unit claim? Is that a reachable goal? Or will Nintendo fall short of that mark?

    Well Wii Fit has zero to little chance to actually gettting anywhere near the 10 million copies.
    Wii Sports Resorts has a chance because it's bundled. It's like tokz_21 sayed, " The way i looked at it was that i got a free game with buying a wii mote." That's the only reason I have that game. I just needed another wiimote for Brawl.

    MAKE ANOTHER SUPER SMASH BROS. OR A MARIO/SONIC PLATFORMER!!!
    THAT will get them 50 mil. copies!
    New Super Mario Bros. Wii looks great
    So does Wii Sports Resort
    Dunno about Wii Fit Plus or Vitality Sensor...

    I'm guessing he means altogether...10 mil each is a very big exaggeration no matter how much I support the New Super Mario Bros. haha >.<</safety_wrapper&g t;

    Now is this on a time frame or just overall in general? because i think that with time, all of these could surpass 10 mil. copies. then again, if you are looking at just a year, then no way in hell are any of these selling 10 mil. I think that in 5 to 10 years, all 3 of these will hit 10 mil.

    I think much like the Gamecube, we will be looking more at third-party support for games then Nintendo.

    Please make some good games Nintendo. I'm tired of this crap. The GameTrailer guys were talking about the New Super Mario Brothers and said its practically Nintendo DS graphics.

    What a dunce. Backlash? Pssh, I can't wait for the new Mario game, I'm a big fan of the 2D style. I'm surprised they didn't include Galaxy too but maybe that's a ways off yet. I might try Resort, but have no interest in Fit.

    I think the Wii is a great little system. I have just as many games on that as I do my PS3 (50 or so) and none were truly bad. They both greatly outperform the 360's meager offerings, that's for sure. Those that refuse Nin's games aren't gamers at all. They're only posers who lost touch with good gaming.

    @realdt

    I completely agree with you. I don't see why age/maturity is even a factor when it comes to video games. I'm 30 right now and I still play any game and system out there. If a game is fun... it's fun, period. Does it really matter if I'm a marine shooting aliens or Mario jumping on Goombas? NO

    I could see it happening. Wii Play has already sold over 20 million, really only because of the added controller. Wii Sports Resort will easily sell 10 million. New Super Mario Bros. will sell 10 million as well.

    But I don't think Wii Fit Plus will sell anywhere near that many. The first Wii Fit was fun for about 2 days then it got old quick. My balance board ended up becoming an expensive dust collector.

    CujoSWAoA: I grew up with Nintendo and I have a Wii, and a DS. Does it make you more mature than me to have an Xbox 360 or a PS3?

    I have both worlds: The Wii and PS3. Nintendo's world is more fun. Can't wait for New Super Mario Bros Wii! I have Wii Sports Resort on reserve at FYE.

    I think they will make it. You have to take into the fact that wii sports: resorts has the motion plus; so that there is going to make that game a hot commodity. It's the same reason wii play best selling title on the wii. you bundle a game with something like a wii mote or wii plus and sales will drive.

    I don't play wii play but the only reason i got it is because of the wii mote that came with it. The way i looked at it was that i got a free game with buying a wii mote.

    Nope, not buying any of them, or a Wii. And I grew up on Nintendo. Key phrase there, grew up.
