Live Blog: GDC 2009 Keynote - Nintendo President Satoru Iwata

Nintendo knows its E3 2009 press conference sucked (okay, I'm paraphrasing). In my E3 2009 press conference report card, I ranked it behind Microsoft and Sony. According to Nintendo Everything, Nintendo president and CEO Iwata has admitted to the company's press-conference shortcomings:

"As for the media briefing at E3, of course we had many internal discussions after that. Honestly speaking, none of us at Nintendo thought that our presentation at E3 was as good as it could have been. It is apparent that we could not fully convey the charm of our products. In the past, Wii Sports and Wii Fit were naturally able to convey their appeal on stage since it was something no one had ever seen or imagined before. People seemed to capture the appeal of Wii Sports instantly and although there was some initial confusion with Wii Fit, its appeal did get through to the audience afterwards.

This year, however, with the New Super Mario Bros. Wii, four people lined up with Wii Remotes was not a scene that no one had ever seen. Those who actually had the chance to play understood how the game would change with four people playing simultaneously, but we could not address that fun sentiment at the media briefing. Now we strongly feel that we need to look into finding a better way to demonstrate the products’ appeal better at E3 in these times where more people are watching it online via web cast not only in the U.S. but all around the world, than the number of audience who actually watch it in the theatre. In that sense, we learned many lessons from this year’s E3 show."

Essentially, Iwata said, "Yes, our presser sucked. With so many people watching on television and the Internet, we need to stop sucking."

What do you think of Iwata's criticism? If he on the mark? Is he being too hard on the company? Do you think the company will hold a better presser in 2010 than 2009? Share your thoughts, kind citizens of TheFeed

sorry, but the Mario games are awesome - they were the only good thing about Nintendo's conference if you ask me. They're not going to stop making Mario Games, get over it.
what they need to do is stop catering to kids and families. this casual-market that they've created is what's crappy about 'this' generation of consoles.
the Wii can *not* compete with the video games on the 360 *OR* the PS3. Sure, the mario games are awesome - Galaxy 2 and New Super whatever will be awesome - they'll be really great games.
but really, the last great game they released was either Galaxy, Brawl, or something in that vein. Last year, somebody from nintendo says that Animal Crossing was their answer to 'hardcore gamers'.. they still have no idea what an actual gamer is. yes, they know how to get a gaming system in my grandma's hands - for about 3 hours.
    after that?
    they're lost.

Maybe Nintendo should make a better, more mature Wii w/ upconverted HD, more memory, play DVDs/CDs, have more colors, customized menu, have more video/audio file compatibility, be more compatible w/ DSi, have a better browser, and have a special promotion in which you can trade an old Wii in (better put your Miis on Wiimotes and memory on SD cards) for this "Wii 2.0" free for 1-3 months.

Yeah, it was pretty craptacular. First, for the love of God, please create a game that isn't Mario related. Geez louise. Mario was fun back in the day, but for crying out loud...

Dunaway was not the best speaker, and that's fine. But trust me, if their line up games had been better, more diverse, more action and less cutesy, nobody would care who was up there talking. I understand that there's an emerging market in the girl tween, older female market, but come on Nintendo, I've said before, "Dance with the one who brung ya." Meaning, real gamers, got Nintendo to the point ($$$) where they could make something like the Wii. Don't abandon us when we're the ones who enabled you to get to this point. How many games do you think a 17 year old boy buys? Now compare that number to how many games a 17 year old girl or 40+ woman buys?

More 3rd party games, make your games more diverse and most important of all make them GOOD. Deliver on these and the fans will follow, the speaker is important, but if you give something the fans want, that's all they'll remember.

nintendo has a whoe needs to drop mario. every year its a new crappy mario game and every year its the same boring crap. LoZ is their only franchise i care about and they make those game with 3-5 year gaps.

nintendos top staff needs to be changed out too. u see sony and MS and how young their presidents look and how into the games they are. then u see nintendo with all their 40+ owners that still think that the gameboy is a top selling system.

In all nintendo's entire marketing strategy is a fail too but they're like whatever. thank god i bought a ps3 and sony actually has brains

I myself saying this as an opinion would not say that thier press conference sucked. I would say that it was flawed. By my opinion i would say to follow these guidelines.

    1. Stop promoting casual games as much. I mean what kind of person is a casual gamer and wathches a video game press conference. Also something that relates to this, no more games that aren't games. You know the special ones.

    2. Stop talking about how your sales are going. I know for sure nobody cares about how rich you are.

    3. No more perhipherals. Don't make anotherone unless it improves gameplay or makes you live forever(that vitality sensor looks kind of useless).

    4. Stress the hardcore games the most. That is what everyone is there for. You don't have to stress what you pretty much know people are going to buy. You stress over the hardcore games alot yur fan boys will will purchase that game.

This years E3 wasn't that exciting from any company. I was not impressed by Natal, Sony's bootlegging the Wiimote, and Nintendo is starting to shoot itself with the NEW DSi LASER! AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET THIS FALL FOR 599 US DOLLARS!!!!

But seriously as much as I Nintendo's conference kinda sucked, I say it was a success. Reason being is that it didn't utterly suck and fail to the epic level that it did last year. Also, I think that Metroid: Other M was E3's biggest surprise.

I don't mind Nintendo promoting casual stuff at E3...for 5 minutes. E3 is NOT the place for ANYTHING casual. The only casual game they have that counts as a core game now is Wii Sports (Wii Fit doesn't really count), but even then I don't really want to see that for too long. While I love it when a new entry in a Nintendo Franchise is released, I want to see new franchises. Let's face it, Nintendo is without a doubt the most creative company in the gaming industry.

actually nintendo has a game that they stopped working on that was a new IP for core. It's project name was H.A.M.M.E.R so I don't understand why nintendo can't pick that project up and make it (it looked like a game for core gamers, and it was one of the games I was hoping to play on my wii)

I didnt find there show sucked ! I thought it was awesome. I cant wait for Metroid Other M, Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario Galaxy. Im already enjoying Wii Sports Resort. To me this means they want to make their show even better next year, which i think is just great !!

Well, maybe if they stopped making causual games for soccer moms and 9 year olds, then gamers would be excited. I'm not saying that their aren't mature titles on Wii, cause there's plenty. But what Nintendo needs are the titles that longtime Nintendo fans want. Metroid: Other M looks great, but where's Zelda (I know it's on the way, but they should have at least announced it)?
What about a Kid Icarus game? Donkey Kong has been reduced to a crappy rhythem game. And can we get a full blown Pokemon game on the Wii that isn't some stupid tournament based thing? I wanna catch em all on my wii, not my DS.

While Nintendo's showing this year was better than last year's showing, they DEFINITELY should've done better.

-My feelings towards Cammie Dunway have already been expressed, so I won't bother with her. But I think that they should also stop letting their overly-excited cheerleader, Reggie, take center stage.

-We also need a new, original IP. One that's as big as Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and other popular franchises. Maybe one that would cater towards the more mature audience. While Zelda and Metroid are good efforts, those aren't really enough.

-My impression of this year's show is that Nintendo is trying to balance their standard audience with their casual audience. I have nothing against Nintendo's desire to get casual gamers into the Wii and DS, but E3 is not the place to do that. If you do want to show these casual games at E3, try showing them off at a separate event. No standard gamer cares about Wii Fit Plus, Style Savvy, the Women's Murder Club, or other stuff.

-When I watched the Xbox 360 and PS3 press conferences, I saw more of the third parties coming up and showing their games off. We need to see more of that in Nintendo's press conference. Not just slideshows or trailers for 3rd party games most of us have already seen or heard of.

In reality, I have little hope that Nintendo will actually listen to the backlash and feedback. Given Nintendo's track record of endlessly repeating itself, they'll just repeat the same song and dance at next year's E3. I'll probably watch their next E3 press conference and see what they got. But unless they can prove themselves, that's their last strike. Then, they're out.

The Wii sucked from the start. Its graphics are weak, it doesn't have access to most of the multiplatform titles like its predecessors (and seriously, this should have changed by now) and the only thing close to that are remakes or prequels. Come on!!!

Look I don't own a Wii. But any gamer born in the eighties, knows that it's first love in the world of gaming will always be a Nintendo!! I am always cheering for them because I know they will never dissapoint when it comes to games that hold a nostalgic value as well as raise the bar on your overall gaming experience!! Now with the announcement of the two new Mario games has already made me think about why do I not have a Wii already!! Not to mention the announcement of a new Metroid game!! Seeing as how Wii is different then 360 and PS3, they should make their press presentation different from the competition as well!!

They said the same thing in 2008 when their conference sucked. They said "We didn't do everything we could have, and we didn't show the Hardcore Gamers that we still care about them" and everybody felt bad for them after they said that. Now, they are doing the SAME EXACT TRICK!!!!!! They are trying to get everyone to feel bad for them again, so we will all forgive them and not give up on them.

The bottom line is, they will never have a good E3 ever again. They do absolutely NOTHING for the Hardcore Gamer, and their E3 Conferences feel about as Juvenile as a Care Bears episode. The New Mario Bros game is NOT an announcement for the Hardcore, and I am tired of them trying to pass off all of their Watered Down Casual Games as Games that will also appeal to Hardcore, because they don't.

As long as they keep their backs turned from the Hardcore, and as long as they try and pass off Kiddie games as Hardcore Games, they will never have a successful E3. The "Casual" crowd is already starting to loose interest in the Wii. Wii Sports Resort was the only thing I can think of that they got right in years.

A good presser starts with exciting games. Showing Wii Vitality? Big mistake. It doesn't help that it appears that Nintendo has given up on pushing the graphic capabilities of the Wii. Wii Sports 2 is still graphically primitive, Mario Galaxy 2 shows no sign of improvement. Instead, some third parties have taken the time and financial investment to push the Wii. That to me speaks volumes about how "lazy" Nintendo has become in delivering quality software. Sure, they are likely going to have another record year because they have kept their software development costs absurdly low, but how long can they keep lowering the bar?

The saving grace is two new Mario games finally showed up.

A new Metroid game by Team Ninja was the biggest surprise ever.

I know Nintendo E3 hit hard, but it was much better than last year. Keep it up, Nintendo!

They need to stop approaching it as if it were a stockholder's meeting. The E3 press conference is functionally a giant advertisement screaming, "buy our console because the games coming out for it soon are going to rock." When you think of it like that, the changes that need to be done are obvious:

    - Stop letting the executives present. Cammie Dunaway and, to a lesser extent, Reggie Fils-Aime have lost credibility with fans. Get an entertainer to be, you know, entertaining.

    - Promote third-party games. And not just with a 30 second trailor we've all already seen. Give the dev team at least 5 minutes each to show off the product. The fact that we didn't see a Conduit or Red Steel 2 demo is a crying shame. Also, request that big publishers save announcements like The Grinder and No More Heroes 2 for the Nintendo conference.

    - Most importantly, stop promoting casual games. I have no problem with Nintendo cornering the casual market, but E3 is not the venue. Kids are not watching E3 to decide what to buy and neither are their parents. Its all about targetted advertising.

I am astonished that Dunaway hasn't been fired for failing to do research on E3, the biggest marketing platform in the industry. She has botched the last two events and it mkes no sense that they are giving a third. With hope, Nintendo will do their homework, learn from their mistakes, and present a better show next year (if anyone is still watching).

Wow. There's a lot of heat for Cammie here. I thought she was too subdued this year and too exuberant last year.

Yo nintendo doesn't care about the games which has been proven by there past 2 E3's. All they care about is their statistics of how much freaking sales they have per console. It took them long enough to figure out that no one gives a flying (fill in the blank)

Nintendo Wii reminds me of a 4cyl engine, lots of power in the beginning but no power in the top end, for those of you that dont know about cars im saying that the Wii was the sht when it came out but now its popularity is fading away.
