Hey, Microsoft, Will True Search Functionality Ever Come To Xbox 360?

The ability to add instantly streaming movies to your Netflix queue via genre categories and recommendations in the new Xbox 360 dashboard update is welcome, but it's not a true solution to a problem that has plagued the ever-expanding catalog of Xbox Live. There is no true search functionality, no way to just type in Halo 3 and watch Xbox Live pull up all the content related to Bungie's shooter. Or just type in The Office and have the episodes pop up in Netflix.

This will become a bigger problem over time, but it's not an issue Microsoft is unaware of, Xbox Live chief of staff Steve Willet recently told me during a phone interview.

"For right now, you should not expect that there's going to be a dramatic change in functionality from what you see on the preview in that regard," he said. "This is one…the whole idea of search and making that really work on the console holistically is not just a function of Netflix and what their service does, not just a function of any of the other pieces, it's a really complex area of focus and we will continue to innovate as quickly and as holistically as we can across the service."

"Believe me," Willet continued, "the team not only has heard the feedback but really also understands the feedback and are making every effort we can not just to make it simpler in the short term by doing smart things and making the controller a little more useful, but also thinking more holistically about how people with the volume of content and entertainment experiences we now have on the services, how important getting the search capability right is."

For the time being, however, true search is not coming to Xbox Live. But the team is thinking about it and trying to come up with ways to get around it in the short term.

"We understand that that's important and hopefully we can run fast enough to get in front of that," concluded Willet.

I must admit I didn't read the whole thing, but thats a really cool idea. (Not related to my name) I heard from twitter that you can now pay with Paypal. Things must be really heating for Microsoft.

That could be pretty coolieo if they added a search thing...
    But seriously (2.0)...
Red Ring Of Death... shut up man, what's so bad about the xbox 360 exactly?
    I like all 3 systems...
All 3 systems have SOMETHING good about them...
    Wii - Mario / Zelda
    PS3 - Killzone / Little Big Planet
Xbox - Halo / Gears Of War / Mass Effect
So just stop complaining about the system(s) that yee don't like and leave all of the (normal) people (that being people who don't hate on everything just because they think it has a few minor problems...) alone.

I really don't feel like the 360 dashboard needs a search bar. I really like the whole one click thingy.

If they do decide to add a search function, PLEASE categorize the results! If I'm just looking for DLC, I don't want to have to scroll through a huge list of all the content just to find one or two items.

I think a good point to bring up is that it isn't very fast or conveniant to try and type using thumbsticks... I have a chat pad and it works great and a search funt. would be great for that but not everyone can buy those or wants too... I think searching is not that hard right now. I mean you can quickly scroll down to Halo 3 with a couple flicks of the right trigger, (like page down) I dont see much of a problem really, but I do think it might be good to in the future get a search option for those who use chat pads..

I love RRODisBack. He tries so hard and yet falls flat on his face every single time. Just hilarious.
