If you've been playing 'Splosion Man as much as I have, this week's Soapbox is for you. The Sess uses that game as a springboard to talk about all the reasons why downloadable games are great for the industry and gamers alike. From the creativity aspect, to keeping platformers alive, to maintaining very challenging difficulty curves, Xbox Live Arcade games and PSN downloadable titles are selling well and getting great reviews. Now if only Microsoft would let me pay for them in actual dollars...

I loved Jumpman and Jumpman Jr on the C64 hope they release them on wii c64 vc. They were every bit as good as Lode Runner. I'd say that was the first platformer jumper game made, even before super mario. I allways thought since they wanted to originally call mario jumpman and they changed it, they changed it on account of Jumpman by Epyx Legal Issues. Who knows? This game just shows I'm an old fart. lol, but I still love games. Xbox 360 is amazing. Hope they get rid of the basic and keep the Pro.

I am a huge fan of platformers as well; classic and new. The first Jack and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank blew me away. Such ingenuity and style. The classic Sonics and Metroids were amazing as well. We may never forget Mario either. It is always good to know there is still room for games like this out there!

One thing that, i feel like, has been lost in today's videogames is a sense of true accomplishment and victory, other then just finishing the story. Boss fights are evidence of this. While they can be awesome to behold (IE any of the boss battles in Gears 2 or Resistance 2), they are purely cinematic and are only there to create a set piece, instead of being an actual obstacle to over come. The FPS and RPG genre are full of this. The only FPS in the last two years that truely gave me a feeling of accomplishment after beating a level was COD4 due to its insane difficulty in the larger firefights (on veteran of course).

I love platformers because there is a true sense of accomplishment (and an actual difficulty curve). Not only are the good ones punishingly difficult at times but they make you feel like you actual did something great when you beat that section where you died 37 times. I absolutely love Splosion Man because of this.

Adam you are 100% on this soapbox

Platforming isn't gone... What, did Little Big Planet never happen? Quite possibly the best platformer ever made and you pretend it doesn't exist.

And about patches, back to LBP again! There's a patch in the works that will allow you to create levels with other people online, and I'm quite excited about that patch.

I am the same exact way. I don't want to spend $50 or even $30 (I'm cheap) on a game that i will only play for half of the time because it is too hard or boring. What downloadable games are doing now is making cheap games that last the right amount of time, and have a good amount of fun difficulty.

I wish there were alot more gamers like adam, platformers are awesome. I'm tired of hearing about WoW its not that great of a game plus all the money people fork over for it. Nobody should get excited about a patch.

Platformers are okay. I like some of them.
But...I'd never buy a full retail $60 one.

I'm gonna take a guess here and say that when you were talking to the Bethesda dude is when you had that 'big slip up.'

I totally agree with you on this one Adam. I have grown up my entire life on platformers (i was a little too young for super mario bros. but i played it when it was an older game). I feel like the return of the platformer started with N+ coming out a few years ago and expanding from its flash origins. I still love to play that game and the difficulty has almost broken a few controllers, but i always found it enjoyable.
