Analysts on the Activision Blizzard conference call discussing the company's second quarter financial results were very interested in the financial impact of StarCraft II's delay into 2010 and what that means for the rest of Blizzard's release schedule. Specifically, does that mean Diablo III will also be released in 2010?
Blizzard president and CEO Mike Morhaime tip-toed around this question during the call. Morhaime noted that Blizzard has not announced a release date for any of their other games, but "the move of StarCraft II to 2010 does not impact schedules of any of our other games."
When another analyst pushed Morhaime on that point, asking whether this meant Blizzard would be sticking to its previously announced plan to deliver one major Blizzard game a year going forward, he provided a little more information.
Morhaime admitted it would be "correct to conclude that you could expect two releases from Blizzard next year, but I would not make any conclusion on what those titles are going to be."
So while Blizzard might release two games next year, that doesn't mean Diablo III is that game, though I desperately hope it is. A World of Warcraft expansion seems more likely.
