Square Enix isn't sticking to tradition with their next MMO, it seems. Eurogamer spotted a Famitsu video interview with Final Fantasy XIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka, who admitted their next online offering would wildly differ from the traditional MMO conventions by ditching experience points and leveling up systems. In Final Fantasy XIV, characters are differentiated by a completely new, unrevealed gameplay system.
"We believe the main factor behind Final Fantasy XI's lasting appeal is the job system," said Komoto. "However, the system [in Final Fantasy XIV] will become something completely different. The focus here will be on weapons. Your weapon will determine how you play. Your weapon will determine how you fight."
I've never played World of Warcraft, let alone the much more hardcore Final Fantasy XI, but I most admit Square Enix's plan to ditch tradition is appealing. If there are any hardcore Final Fantasy XI fans on TheFeed, though, please chime in.
