LucasArts Teasing X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter AnnouncementLucasArts' two-pronged attempt to revitalize their classics with The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Tales of Monkey Island appears to be a success. As part of a follow-up interview with LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez about plans for the months ahead, I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company's lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series.

His answer?

"We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned," said Rodriguez. "We will soon….."

By the way, that's his number of dots, not mine. We conducted the interview over e-mail. Five dots is far more mysterious than three dots, so I'm willing to bet I'm onto something here.

Whether it's a full-on remake ala The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition or an addition to the company's growing Steam lineup…well, who cares? Either one would be the first acknowledgement of a major part of LucasArts' legacy in a long, long time.

The last major release in the series was X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter X-Wing Alliance. I missed that one.

Lucas Arts really needs to make a new X-Wing vs TIE game. PC/MAC only please! Released on Steam. That way it can have the more advanced control scheme that consoles can't handle. And it would give me an excuse to buy a cool joystick. I haven't had a joystick since I snapped my last one playing X-Wing vs TIE all those years ago...

I played the X-Wing collectors edition, then TIE Fighter, then XvT, then Alliance. I still play XvT a lot, though I really wish I could connect it to the internet and play (The networking portion is apparently too old to work with modern systems)

The campaigns are great and all, but leaving out the multiplayer is a huge mistake. Just because some people can't hack the competition doesn't mean there aren't others out there who love the abuse! :) I love honing my skills then challenging other players to a duel. Gets my heart pumping and provides a challenge no AI can match.

Biggest mistake in Alliance was not providing a more XvT feel for the 'simulator' portion, as far as mission selection, awards, etc. XvT was awesome, a true test of starfighter gaming skills, and it was nice to be able to track your performance by mission so you could tell what needed work (or, looking at it another way, where the challenges lay)

I say it's high time to complete this series the right way. For that , we need five things, in addition to the obvious graphics and sound improvements:

1.Campaigns for those who love the story aspect, and lots of them. Include the original X-Wing and Tie Fighter campaigns, XvT and BoP missions, XWA Campaign, as well as two or three new campaigns for Rebels, Imps, and Pirates.

    2. An XvT-like interface for practice and multiplayer, and a good, fast multiplayer client. The ability to play Campaign missions in this mode (perhaps after beating them)

    3. A REAL mission builder along with a quick skirmish/melee maker, so even when we kick the crap out of the game for a year and start getting bored with the stock missions, we can always just make new missions and pass them out to our friends for even more hours, nay days, of fun.

    4. FAST gameplay and killer AI, and of course systems management. I don't mind adding it to a console, but for cripes sake, don't take away the system management! That's a HUGE part of the experience. In fact, we could add a couple of more things to make it even better-- Fuel management (yes, you could run out on a long mission, or get a leak) and single/multiple engine failures that affect flight characteristics. Also, a 'float' mode (kicking off the stabilizers) so we could use more 'realistic' space flight tricks (think Battlestar Galactica). Imagine kicking your stabs off and flipping around to shoot at the cloud of ties behind you...

    5. Finally, and perhaps most important, a complete shipset from the Star Wars Universe. With the advent of the prequels, the books, and everything, I think it's high time we got a chance to REALLY fly a Naboo fighter, a Kuat Delta 7 Aethersprite, Yuuzuan Vong ships--there are lots of new toys out there! Going back to campaigns--we could have campaigns for these ships as well, or at least the ability to make campaigns using the editor. XWA gave us the most flyable ships ever, and to me, this was a huge leap forward.

If they are going to make one more X-Wing game, and then cut us off for ten more years, they should at least have the decency to make it the BEST of everything that came before and then some!

The only reason the space fighter sim genre is 'dead' is there hasn't been anything worth playing put out for a while. With the right game, the genre would be back--especially if you could have games of a couple hundred people going multiplayer in HUGE battles set in the SW universe.

I would lose more hours of my life to such a game than I would care to admit.

No news regarding a new X-Wing game since 09, but I'd like to let anyone browsing here know that X-Wing series multiplayer gaming is still alive in 2011! Dark Jedi Organization clubs TIE Fighter Alliance (http://tfa.darkjedi.org/) and The Rebel Alliance (http://tra.darkjedi.org/) were some of the biggest and best organized groups in the good old MSN Gaming Zone days and still continue to fly in X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter / X-Wing Alliance events every week. The Voobly gaming lobby (http://www.voobly.com/) is the latest and greatest replacement for the Zone.

Also keep there in mind there are SW Fan based clubs out there that still use these games. Not everyone is a pilot at heart but if these games were redone it would make a lot of people happy.

What I wouldn't give to sit down with some of the game developers just to chat and share my thoughts. From a gaming community perspective new flight Sims base off these classics would be a wild fire waiting to happen. I see spin off possibilities too with all the newer stuff as well which help to gain the younger generations interests well.

For me flying a custom mission gives me the tangibility of being apart of the stories we write. It also serves as as spring board to help me tap in to that creative side with my writing. Not to mention my four year old likes to sit in my lap when I fly and I fine myself in awe by this every time.

Mostly recently my friend 17 year old son who looks up to me as an uncle has also expressed interest in these games. So much so he recently join the club to fly the X-Wing game and again I find myself in awe by this shared connection. To have new versions of theses games would in my opinion reinforce that kind of connection and inspire creativity.

What the hell are you blabbing about? Burned with WHAT, exactly?
    Steam works flawlessly.

Hmmm... are you saying then that one needs Steam to play it, if it comes out? That would be a shame, I was already burned on their Empire Total War and I'm not going to be burned by Steam again, count me out.

I re-read the comments on this post. Folks, forget porting to a console. You need all the controls that we had back on the PC with a keyboard. Just make it a PC/Mac port. Update the graphics and sound a bit, but again focus on making it a really fun space pseudo-flight-simulator with an awesome story. Customizable missions when you're done for sure, but solid campaigns with long missions.

Porting to a console would destroy it. On a console you would have limited controls so it would have to be more arcade-oriented. Also, consoles demand their HD graphics... we don't really need that. Just a really fun solid game like the originals.

Like the guy above said.... hell if they just reskinned them and released them again on the PC/Mac I'd be happy to buy them. (although preferably as one single game and you can choose your path).

X-Wing and TIE Fighter were my favorite games ever. Well, at least space/flying games. I still have some space in my heart for WarCraft 2 and Civilization, but those were entirely different games.

Whatever happened with this post? I haven't seen any updates since then and we're just a few months short of a full year since the announcement. I was talking about X-Wing and TIE Fighter today at work -- BEST GAMES EVER.

If they redid the two titles, put them together as one, updated the graphics and sound a little bit, I would totally re-buy it. Throw in multiplayer if you want but don't go overboard with making it a beautiful game. The gameplay of X-Wing and TIE Fighter, the missions, and the control we had over our spacecraft was unlike anything else I've seen since then.

Most modern space games are more action-oriented rather than flight oriented. I remember in X-Wing having full control over my ship, rapidly switching between shields, engines, and lasers, and calling for reinforcements. With a solid joystick or mouse you could have amazing control.

I just watched some youtube videos of the original X-Wing. What an amazing game. Just remake the original game on PC and Mac and maybe, MAYBE throw in some multi-player. I'd probably be happy just doing campaigns.... so much fun. So many epic battles were fought by me almost two decades ago with these games.

Anyone remember the B-Wing additions? Ha. Anyone remember having to tweak their boot disks (autoexec.bat and config.sys) to free up a few more KB of the 640KB primary memory limit so they could play? Wow.... good times.

And please please don't have ground missions. I'm seeing the updates for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and it's all focused on running around on planets and stations with blasters. Who cares -- I want space combat that's a lot of fun (with less emphasis on Hollywood level graphics).

I think LucasArts knows what I'm going after here. Please deliver!

Oh my god! When people ask me what game I played and then replayed over and over again, my answer is ALWAYS the Collector's Edition of TIE Fighter. I don't think I can play it anymore, my system is too much for it, but TIE Fighter had a great story and was completely action packed. I've never been more immersed in a game than I was with TIE Fighter. I loved flying the TIE Defender and hitting the boost button (what was it called? "NANDS?"). Can't help gushing over this game and possible news of it coming back.

interesting, ign.com has some off-screen, leeked, videos so a star wars themed air craft in the video section or Star Wars Battlefield: 3 (Rumored). i wonder if that was actually early production of this game? The footage was soon to be pulled by request of Lucas arts
