Sega: Fixing Sonic Will Take Time

It’s really no surprise that Sonic the Hedgehog just ain’t what it used to be. Sega’s last offering, Sonic Unleashed gave players the chance to enjoy all the fun and excitement that comes from taking a character known for his lightning speed and forcing him to walk around and talk to townspeople. But Sega says it’s on the case, and quality Sonic titles are just around the corner…and maybe down a block or two.

Speaking with IndustryGamers, vice-president of marketing for Sega of America, Sean Ratcliffe, explained:

“The quality is something that will be fixed over time. It's not something where you wake up one morning and say, 'You know what, we're going to improve our quality on this franchise,' and it magically happens. A lot of hard work goes into striving for quality.”

While no one disputes the tremendous amounts of time, energy and work goes into making solid games, Ratcliffe’s comment has the tone of a best-selling author with writer’s block trying to get another advance from his/her publisher. In terms of what Sega has in store for Sonic, that’s something that Sega has yet to figure out, although the company seems quit interested in exploring the digital download sector a bit more in the future.

“From a mobile and iPhone point of view, we've been very successful with Sonic. So we can look at XBLA and so on, and it means we can give those core fans experiences in different ways now. So that's a big part of our strategy, in terms of taking classic IP and making it available digitally, rather than spend a huge amount of money trying to re-imagine that IP on 360 and PS3; there's a lot more financial risk attached to that.”

You know why there’s a lot of risk (in addition to the standard amount of risk that every developer and publisher faces these days)? Because gamers have yet to connect with a next-gen Sonic game the way they connected with the classic Sonic games. If you succeed in doing that, then you won’t have to rely so heavily on low-risk port projects to make up for the money that’s been lost as a result of underperforming retail games.

Here’s your chance Sonic fans. Tell Sega how you’d fix the franchise, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be able to say that you helped restore a classic franchise to its former glory.

I loved Sonic 2 Battle. Give me more of that and some old school loops and baddies and I'm good. No more Werehogs and Black Knights

Weird... nobody seems to think Mario is TOO childish or TOO dated. Sega can fix the Sonic franchise if they just stick to what worked back in the old Dreamcast, or for that matter, Genesis days. Also, don't release the game before checking for bugs and glitches Sonic Team. :)

I actually began working on this shortly after Christmas last year. I don't consider this a complete list, but since the question came up, I leave it open to addition. It is entitled "How to Fix Sonic".
Since those idiots at Sega seem incapable of taking a step forward without taking a step back, someone needs to give them a swift kick in the tail down the path to actually making a good Sonic game. Since unlike most other reviewers, I wasn t completely repulsed by Sonic Unleashed, I ve had time to think about the subject. I have come up with the following suggestions for how Sonic can be good again.

    1. They re called Sonic games. The massive cast of barnyard friends that Sonic has acquired over the years have got to go. Sonic is the reason we play these games- Tails came along while the games were still good, so he can stay.
    2. 3D is overrated. The very thing that makes Sonic, Sonic- his speed, makes 3D a dicey proposition. That being said, the 2 1/2 D levels in Unleashed are an excellent compromise.
    3. Your audience is older then you think. Many Sonic fans grew up with the Hedgehog- on the Genesis, yes that Genesis. That means we can handle complex themes, and intelligent dialogue. I m not saying that we need blood and guts and the rust and grey color palette of many M rated games, but we don t need stories that are simple to a five year old.
    4. Hubs break game-play. Sonic games are about running fast through levels, collecting stuff, and platforming. Hubs slow this process down, and making us talk to people to find the one person that actually has something intelligent to say and then wander around aimlessly trying to find where the actual game level is- then being told we don t have enough whatever to get in is aggravating in the extreme.
    5. My console doesn t run on quarters. Lives are a hold over from arcades, trying to get another quarter from me. Every other game in the world has unlimited lives- why the hell don t you?
    6. Let me save when I want to. Seriously. I can understand that in a game based on speed might be broken by letting me save anywhere, but for the love of God, why can t I save at the beginning of a level? Seeing point #3, I have other stuff to do in my life and my average play session is a lot shorter then a ten year old dodging chores on a Saturday afternoon.
    7. Fix the damn controls! The controls are too loose. I don t to go sliding off a cliff because the analog stick won t go any farther in whatever direction. Also, I can appreciate simple control schemes but the X button in Unleashed does too much. Dash, attack, dash in the air, wall jump, order more liquor- that s too many things! I can t tell you the number of times I went careening off into oblivion because Sonic dashed when I was trying to wall jump. I m not even going to dog you about the camera- as any platformer player knows making a good camera is a black art that requires sacrifice to secretive demon gods.
    8. Minimize the Were-hog. I actually kind of liked the were-hog game-play for a while. I also realize that I was in the minority on that, some reviewers felt that it destroys the very nature of a Sonic game. You didn t get the full potential from the Were-hog: in relation to #3, you tried to suggest that the were-hog was Sonic s dark side (as were creatures are in Western mythology), but still tried to play to a younger audience- and failed at both. Also, the ratio of were-hog levels to regular Sonic levels- especially in the early game, where seriously out of balance. More Sonic, less Were-hog.

1.No character dialog. Silent cut-scenes are okay, not to mention oldschool
    2. Non of all these new useless characters like blaze or silver
    3. No gimmicks, like swords or claws
    4.NO CHARACTER DIALOG
    5. Blast Processing!
    6. Celebrate, because you just fixed my favorite series.
P.S. No Character Dialog, but BLAST PROCESSING is okay

why don't they make a true, classic 2d, side scrolling, sonic game with 3d graphics like street fighter 4, There is alot of good platformers that use 3d graphics with classic gameplay, Like Splosion man or New super mario bros It doesn't need to be a 3d game they should make a New super mario bros type game with same awesome game mechanics but new levels with awesome graphics its not that hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sega....I've been A loyal Sonic fan ever since I started playing games from the sonic franchise....I loved the jump from original to the next gen sonic........The day stages from sonic unleashed were great...but the werehog stages killed it. Keep away from those....implement the same engine you used for the day stages from sonic unleashed into future titles....in addition to that....Keep things going with the sonic storybook series....come up with some great adventures but just make sure that the blue blur....remains as the blue blur............Pick up where you left off with the sonic adventure series.....Sonic Adventure 2 is undoubtedly the best sonic adventure there was....how hard could it be to make a sonic adventure 3? Never forget that sonic is speed....remember that and all will be well.......and don't cut corners on games just because the nintendo wii isn't capable of doing what the ps3 or 360 can. Make all the games the same....Wii users defiantly got the short-end of the stick with sonic unleashed.....make all the cross-platform games use the same engine so that all your customers will have the same thing.....no matter what the console.... Remember that....and all will be well....I look forward to the Future of our favorite blue hedgehog.

If you go to the source link, I posted a very very long post that compares the old and the new, and what I think can be done to fix Sonic. TL;DR is an understatement, it would definitely not fit here.

If you are a true Sonic fan like me, it's worth a look. But you have been warned.

How about they steal the style of little big planet? Make a 3d 2d level game. cause really all we want to do again is have sonic outrun the screen...

like ac13bx said sonic needs to quit , but like jkirnes13 said is very correct sega needs to realize sonic is that these constant retarded adventures that are ridiculous and ideas a 8 year old would of thought of . nintendo's ideas are phenomenal and they're fun . micro soft makes since, sony also . sega better make something like they did with spartan total warrior, really good game . i gotta stop before i go farther....................... .......

    Oh, I forgot this.

    7. Actually, get rid of every character except Knuckles and Sonic. You can keep Tails, as long as you make him less annoying.

Here's what needs to be done to fix Sonic.

    1. Stop adding new characters every single game. And only keep the original cast of characters, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Eggman, and Sonic, although I don't mind Shadow, Chaos, or Gamma/Omega.
    2. Make a game that has similar gameplay to Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2. The only real bad thing about those games was the camera SOMETIMES.
    3. Fire every at Sonic Team who has influenced all the games after SA2. Except the people who were behind the Day Levels in Unleashed.
    4. Get a new staff.
    5. Don't add some stupid gimmick like the werehog.
    6. CHAO GARDEN!!!!!!!!!!!

    whats so hard about

    1) lose al the ancillary characters Including Tails...ESPECIALLY tails

    2) go back to streight up Runnign and smashing IT CAN be done in 3d the DEmo for he xbox game was simply that and was a BLAST

    3) IF you wanna add somthing give sonic free running abilities (tell me the idea ofsonic running UP a building Spinning in the air and landing on the cities ower lines to do a rail slide dosent sound awsome)

I think sonic needs some kind of gear system. That way he doesn't have to be so freaking spastic in small enclosed areas that focus on more exact platforming and yet he can still go all out on the track portions of the game, and a middle setting for when those tracks start doing things that would normally ruin the camera. Something like that. I think he needs bigger levels as well. Give the audience the feeling that he's going at +100 mph by scaling the level that way. We have the technology. Ok, there are my two cents.
