By now you're all used to hearing that the game you can't wait to play has been delayed, and the release date is now 3-6 months after when your pre-order says it will be in your grubby little hands. Well last week's Comic Con saw a short list of big video games get the delay treatment, and that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Take the time to listen to Adam explain the many reasons why delays can be good on this week's Soapbox. From the level of polish a game may have, to the timing along side other major releases, to the contents of your wallet; there are multiple reasons why a delayed release date shouldn't make you angry. Check it out.

Sometimes waiting is a good thing.Look at the game Modern Warfare 2,bound to be game of the year.I think a lot of people would be happy to drop $60 on the counter for this title. It makes the game that much better.Plus it gives the developers time to clear out any last minute bugs, and glitches so they can make the best game possible. But their are some games that don't deserve the $60 price range. Why can't some games when the come out be $29 to $39? I wouldn't mind putting up $60 on games that are worth it.

I completely agree, delaying a game is always a good thing because they're obviously not rushing to push their product out like an unpolished turd. But there are cases where it's just crazy, like Half-Life 2 and TF2. That wait seemed like a decade.. Oh wait.. It almost was.

Delay a game is always good, annoucing it way before it is even close to completion is not. It's OK to delay it another year in order to make it the best game ever, it isn't OK when they announced it 2 years before they even thought they would release it, than find out it will be one or more years before they can wrap it up.

Take GuildWars for example, they dropped the series right when fans were really getting into it and decided to take on their next project, well it has been about 2 years since they declared that they wouldn't be continuing GW and wanted to make GW2, and it's still not expected to go into beta for another 2 years. Not only did they abandon a very unfinished game, which should rightly still have expansions during the time waited for GW2, but at this rate, all the things they were planning on doing 2 years ago are already being pioneered by other games, and may very well be surpassed before they ever release.

Two amazing games that suffered the most from the glut of releases were Far Cry 2 and Mirror's Edge. They really brought new and exciting gaming experiences to the table and because of all the other "marquee" titles, they didn't do as well as they should have.

Splinter Cell is my favourite gaming franchise, and while I'm disappointed that it's been delayed, I would love to see it do well. It reminds me of what happened to Tomb Raider: Underworld. It was a very good game in a franchise that was long in the tooth and it also suffered from being shown up by other titles that looked more appealing. Not to say that SC doesn't look as appealing, but when you go up against games like MW2 and Halo3:ODST it will suffer.

I understand the logic behind games being delayed but that doesn't mean it's not disappointing. If there were only one or two being pushed back, it wouldn't be so bad, but thee's a whole whack(!) of them. Ugh.

And if a company admits a title is being held back (Dark Void) because of a crowded market or whatever isn't that sort of throwing in the towel and admitting "our game ain't good enough to compete with the big boys and we don't have any faith in it?" Doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

The bright side is that at least 'lil porky (my piggy bank) ain't gonna take the beating (hee) it has the last couple of holiday seasons. Joy to the world.

true adam during this economic trouble parents are buying even less games for their kids because they have to save money and play bills because of the cutbacks and Companies down sizing but i will still buy 8-5 games a year

I actualy dont think companies are worried about ODST because that is a downloadable expansion pack ( which makes me wonder why XPlay keep emphisizing it so much as the reason why devs are moving there games ) but I think that the 2 real pushers are MW2 and Assassins Creed II. Now while I didnt like Assassins Creed, it sold like no tomorrow. And also when you consider how much Uncharted 2 and R&C have in the games ( feature wise: R&C with customisable weapons and for U2 the playback of multiplayer and the Co-op ) its no wonder that everything is moving.

MW2, Assassins Creed II, Uncharted 2, R&C:ACIT, and Halo:ODST would kill anyother games that would come out this year. And with the possibility of Gran Turismo 5 coming out this year, devs would be crazy to release some of their games this year if they want their games to sell.

I agree with Adam and it seems like most other people on this subject. I mean seriosly, do you want a game that has bugs left in it, or do you want it to play great. I for one can wait a few months for Bioshock 2 to come out as long as they have it for PS3, and don't wait until after the 360 has it for a few months.

I wish I could get MW2, but I really want Borderlands, L4D2, and Assassin's Creed 2, and I don't know if I'll be able to buy a fourth.

Q1 also seems like a bad time to sell games because everyone is broke from the holidays, plus people will still be playing their Q4 games.

I am going to be torn between so many games it's going to make my mind implode and cause a tear in the seemingly impermeable fabric of reality.

The spastic reactions to the delays doesn't bother me as much as all the crap Valve has received for L4D 2. I feel sorry for them. They're making a sequel to a popular game and not only is there a petition against it, but they're now receiving negative remarks about the location of the game. The article I caught off of G4's twitter said that it is too close to Katrina. I don't remember anyone mentioning the incident in Rwanda when RE5 came out. That wasn't that long ago either. It's not like Konami's now cancelled Six days to Falujah. RE5 and L4D 2 are fantasy stories based in semi-realistic areas. Look at Suda 51's Flower, Sun, and Rain. One of that game's random repeating plot jokes is that the main character suffers from the "Groundhog Day" syndrom. He seemingly repeats the same day over and over again with each day ending with the plane blowing up behind him because of a terrorist bomb. This game came out 6 months before 9/11. Sometimes fantasy just hits really close to reality, but it's still just a story. Why can't a game about Iraq exist? There have already been several movies about it. Does Konami just lack that sensitive touch that everyone seems to need before they can enjoy themselves? Or is the gaming industry just that much easier to get to than the movie industry. Just think. If there was a game about a real incident in Iraq then maybe it would spread a better understanding of just what IS going on in Iraq. But I guess that's just not being sensitive enough to the many individuals who don't want to see all that violence. Those individuals that feel they have so much power that they can bully a company to do as they see best. Those individuals that used the word "racist" because a game was set in New Orleans. Anyone else pissed?

Know what's a good thing? A host that doesn't sound like a robot, speaking really loud so someone who can't understand English will understand English. Or a host that doesn't sound like he has a constant cold and isn't reading anything off the teleprompter. What a concept. Oh and maybe if Sessler actually cared about games.

I completely agree with Adam Sessler, but for a different reason. I can afford to get all these games this fall, but there are so many awesome games coming out on all platforms that I don't have the time to play them all. CODMW2 will suck 2 years of my life away alone.

    Adam,
Good to hear there was some well wishing action going on at Comic Con. If I was there, would have congratulated you on xplay and encouraged you to keep these Soapboxes going. Truth be told I watch the soapboxes more than the show (sorry).
Personally it always seems like the games I'm looking forward to the most always come out around the same time. And then there are extremely slow periods (like this summer) Wouldn't mind at all if they were spaced out more.
That game behind you does look super annoying. I'm getting second hand gamer rage just watching it. What is that, bionic commando?

I agree with Adam with ONE exception,....

No faulty gameplay cuts. IE: If you delay the release I don't want to see many of the "cool" ideas cut and gameplay changed(Stealth to FPS). The example I would use is Prototype. Good game, BUT there were so many ideas that hit the trash bin that could have made that game sooooo much better.

well lets put aside the issues of people anxiously waiting and look at the good side of this being delayed..... their are also games like halo3:odst, modern warfare 2, and assassins creed being realesed all in fall and borderlands would have been an addition.... so its nice ,for me, to not have to stress on four games im planning on getting and just worry about 3.
