Square Enix's Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS may have sold more than 3 million units over the past few weeks, but this week's winner in the "How many units have you sold?" department has to go to Blizzard’s MMORPG juggernaut World of Warcraft.
As Gamasutra reports, the latest NPD data reveals that between the stand alone game, the expansion packs (The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King), and the Collector’s Editions, WoW has now sold a staggering 8.6 million units in the United States alone, generating an estimated $258 million in sales. And that’s before you add in the hundreds of millions of dollars that Activision Blizzard generates from charging users a $15/month subscription fee.
Although, none of this is all that surprising, given Blizzard's new slogan, "We put the 'WoW' in 'WoW! We sure do make an obscene amount of money. Don't we?"
How much money have you personally invested in World of Warcraft up to this point?
