Check out the photo above. That's Prince Dastan, played by the Jake Gyllenhaal, and Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) from the upcoming Prince of Persia movie, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Dastan and Tamina have just escaped from something wet, and are drying off on their horse. The flick is being directed by Mike Newell and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and hits theaters on May 28th, 2010.
As with all video game movies, I will assume that this one will be bad. As much as I'd love to have hope, my optimism has been crushed so many times in the past, that I now take the default position that any movie adaptation of a video game will be terrible. Experience is on my side. I will conceded, however, that Gemma Arterton is hot. What do you think? Is the Prince of Persia series just cinematic enough to buck the trend of bad game-based-films? Although I have trouble seeing Gyllenhaal as a Persian, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one. There is one little tidbit that I think we can take solace in - we finally have a video game movie that doesn't involve Uwe Boll or Paul W.S. Anderson. Never thought I'd see the day...
That fact alone already makes it better than past video game movie incarnations.

I've been following it a little too, (only cause I love the games) and it seems that this movie doesn't follow the game "Sands of Time" much at all, just has the basic elements. I also have a little more hope because Jerry Bruckheimer has a record of more hits than flops, including TV series. I know I'll go see it, and will most likely end up owning it, even if it is bad. *shrug*

Set your expectations low and you won't be disappointed. I expect this movie to be as enjoyable as intentionally playing Superman 64.

The story is interesting, but sadly the past does often predict the future.
But Gyllenhaal is usually in very good films, so I'm giving this film a chance.

It seems that I have a slight bit more hope than you do. That hope probably stems from the fact that this has got to have by far the biggest budget for a game-movie yet (though that of course doesn't mean a good movie). Disney expects this to be a big summer movie next year, so whether it's terrible or not, it's gonna be unlike any video game movie yet.
