Well, strap on your movie-watchin’ coif of alleria, because the long awaited World of Warcraft movie has a director: Evil Dead creator and Spider-Man director, Sam Raimi.
Chief operating officer of WoW developer Blizzard Entertainment Paul Sams said of the partnership via press release:
“Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life. From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We're looking forward to working with him to achieve that here.”
Legendary Pictures will be co-producing and co-financing the film with Warner Bros. Also on board is producer of The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and 12 Monkeys, Charles Roven, so between him and Raimi, it’s safe to say the film is in very capable hands (I looove 12 Monkeys something fierce!). Now, given how early along the film production is at this point, it’s no surprise that there was no mention of a release date or the cast, but that info is surely coming shortly.
In fact, if you're attending
Comic-Con 2009, be sure to check out the Blizzard panel on Thursday, as I'm sure there will be at least some discussion about the film. If you won't be attending, stay tuned to G4 and G4tv.com to find out all the latest news coming out of this year's show.
So how about it WoW fans? Are you satisfied with Sam Raimi being tapped to direct the film adaptation of your beloved MMORPG? If not, who would you rather have seen been chosen to direct it?

Blizz said awhile back they wanted to make it like a war film. hinting that it would be sometime in the past. my guess would be the Third War.
I wouldn't call even Army of Darkness a war movie, and I don't think Sam Raimi could make a war movie...but who knows.
the fact that legendary is on board and looking at 300 and given some of the producers of the film, i'm certain the movie will of very high quality visually. also i think WoW Lore lends itself to an easy on screen translation.
my biggest concern is who they choose for actors. relative unknowns would be best but they have to have strong acting skills. if they put a Ryan Reynolds or Matt Damon type person as the lead i would be very dissapointed.
i'm not against casting a famous character actor for a lore character but that actor best be good.
if Taurens are in it i can't wait to see how they're done or any of the other races actually. i just think Taurens are the most challenging since we've pretty much seen undead in PotC.
i hope they lean toward the serious side like LotR. Blizz has got a chance at something huge imo, with the Hobbit hopefully coming out in a couple years that would make for some epic competition. if WoW was released round the same time.

What i want to know is where they are going to pull the story from. So much material from Warcraft 1-3 before WoW.
Let's hope they don't just glaze over the stories from the pre WoW days, that is some important material if you want your audience to know half of what's going on.

This is could amazing. Or this could be another Super Mario Bros. Movie. And we all know we don't want that again.

No way another Evil Dead will come out now. I don't care about spidey 4 or wow, I want me one last Evil Dead before Bruce is in diapers.

I have never played even one second of World of Warcraft but I would hope it leans more towards some Evil Dead.

No thanks, I'll pass. There hasn't been one good video game to movie adaptation, and I don't expect it to start with WoW.

Even though I quit WoW 6 months ago, I m still interested in seeing this movie. I always thought the story/lore of the game was pretty good or better than most. Does anybody know HOW they re making it? Considering the rather cartoony art style of the game and the quality of the last few cinematic videos in the game, one might think that making a computer animated feature film would be the way to go to keep things congruent like they did with the FF VII movie. But if they go live-action that might make things cheesy. Either way, it ll be interesting to see what becomes of it, and I m glad things are moving along with its production.
Sam Raimi should be good though.

I love the direction Blizzard is taking by hiring the man who did 2 of my favorite film series (Evil Dead + Spider-man) and I hope they continue hiring good talent.
THAT RUN THE SHOW!!
The last thing this movie needs is a celebrity actor/actress to screw up an amazing franchise...
