Sam Raimi Tapped To Direct World of Warcraft Movie

Well, strap on your movie-watchin’ coif of alleria, because the long awaited World of Warcraft movie has a director: Evil Dead creator and Spider-Man director, Sam Raimi.

Chief operating officer of WoW developer Blizzard Entertainment Paul Sams said of the partnership via press release:

“Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life. From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We're looking forward to working with him to achieve that here.”

Legendary Pictures will be co-producing and co-financing the film with Warner Bros. Also on board is producer of The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and 12 Monkeys, Charles Roven, so between him and Raimi, it’s safe to say the film is in very capable hands (I looove 12 Monkeys something fierce!). Now, given how early along the film production is at this point, it’s no surprise that there was no mention of a release date or the cast, but that info is surely coming shortly.

In fact, if you're attending Comic-Con 2009, be sure to check out the Blizzard panel on Thursday, as I'm sure there will be at least some discussion about the film. If you won't be attending, stay tuned to G4 and G4tv.com to find out all the latest news coming out of this year's show.

So how about it WoW fans? Are you satisfied with Sam Raimi being tapped to direct the film adaptation of your beloved MMORPG? If not, who would you rather have seen been chosen to direct it?

well as much as i would love to see a warcraft movie i dont think sam is right for the job...and as for it being a live action film thats not to bad because at least it might not be a cheesy CG kids film . but i think they should have a w3 based movie instead of wow cuase wow dont really have a story line so seeing a w3 movie would be alot more interesting even tho we all know its going to focus more on the alliance than hord (wich is total B.S.) because Blizzard love the alliance...but w.e. with no release date mentioned or cast theres not much anyone knows...but hopfully it wont be a total flop like others in the movie game genre aka resident evil,Doom

Why would it be a "World of Warcraft" movie and not just a "Warcraft" movie? Especially since I don't really remember World of Warcraft having a story.

i was never a fan of WoW but i was a huge fan of Warcraft 3 (never played one or two but i filled in the blanks) CGI to me is the only good way to go, if they make it like the gamer fuel commercial with the night elf and the orc or the same style. you just cant have the same kind of epic battles with live action as you can with CGI, since most of the species aren't human.

I hope Sam makes it true to the game. Thousands of people, mostly 14 or 30 running around and dropping net terms, curse words, and racial slurs like crazy. I wanna hear Christian Bale say "Looks like someone's about to get pwned."

    hmmm

Only if this movie is done using CGI will it work. Trying to do live action with a director like Sam Raimi at the helm could only end in disaster. Spider-Man 2 and 3 were garbage as was Drag me to Hell. If he screws this up I doubt that even a new Evil Dead could save him.

I personally can't wait for this movie. I'm not a fan of any of the spiderman films.... evil dead was pretty good though. Anyway, with the tech that we have nowadays i hope that this movie is live action, but as some above posted, they better cast good actors. Blizzard plz plz plz plz dont fail at this like you have on so many other countless things.

well seeing as how he seems to never care what is in the script action wise the movie will probably be good, but the script is going to be lame. therefor we have spiderman 3. good direction, terrible script. but who doesnt love topher grace.

I'd have to say that I'm pretty comfy with the people they put in charge of this movie. I also agree with Smartguy81 that it has to be CGI because if it was live action....well I can't help but think of that movie that had the audacity to call itself DRAGON BALL Z.....I put the writers, the actors, and the directors, and producers on my hitlist for screwing that up so bad.

All I can say is considering the fanbase for this movie, they better not screw this up because I'm sure there'll be a riot.

I foresee a repeat of the D&D movie happening here. Some things are just not meant to be live action movies. Take Dragon Ball, great anime completely crap hole of a live action movie filled with emo reject actors, namely Justin Chatwin. But that's another topic and I'll stop there.

    @Mradaptability
Actors I hate with a passion:
    1: Tom Cruise
    2:Keanu Reeves
yea that's all I need to list right now
Did you hear what they said to Uwe Boll I believe the quote gos something like "We will not sell the movie rights, not to you...especially not to you."

    I love Blizzard

hmmm, I have always been skeptical about a real people WoW movie, since the opening cinematic is really good.

But, then again, as long as Keanu Reeves is in it, it will be filled with win! He could be a mage and say "There is no spoon." and get infinite mana! (Though it is a WC3 cheat code, it would still be funny.)

Hmm...I think most of the kids will be disappointed by this movie if it is a telling of the first WarCraft game. Regardless there is quite a large fanbase for this material. I am hoping for a CGI movie instead of live action.

Hey. There's a dance feature in WoW.

So if you see an Orc getting out of a store with some new clothes, who would then dance a little and hit on ladies... well... I'm sure that's something that WoW people would do.

    HAAA Svederik!

I think this is a great choice. Really looking forward to this. The only problem is that the release date will be missed by 3 years, and the entire project eventually scrapped because it doesn't meet "standards"....
