Yesterday, July 21st was the 50th anniversary of the Lady Chatterley's Lover case, which is essentially the basis all media censorship cases are based on today. In case you're unfamiliar with the subject, check out the Wikipedia article about it.

Now that you've done your homework, sit down with The Sess and listen to this week's Soapbox. Adam uses this date as a springboard to discuss how video games appear to have dodged the censorship bullet, if only temporarily. Is this the time to celebrate a small victory? Or is this just another calm before the inevitable storm? You decide.

Brown people on the supreme court ehh? Need I remind you that Fox News loves Clarence Thomas Adam. I realize it is tempting to think of the other side of the political spectrum as a homogeneous embodiment of all things tyrannical; but you should consider whether these feelings arise objectively or if they are being fed to you by a political machine (in this case the Democratic Party) which has a vested interest in discrediting their political rivals.

I hope that your reason will allow you to see that ultimately BOTH ends of the political spectrum in this country are dominated by a political oligarchy and the lobbyists which support them. And that as a consequence you should subject your own side to the same cynicism you subject conservatives to.

    Or even better, VOTE LIBERTARIAN!

According to the Associated Press Poll posted during the DOP Nat Convention in 2008....The GOP is 95% white and 56% have a net worth of $500,000 or more. If you looked at there conventions and McCain's concession crowd when he gave his speech, it's obvious that this party will need to make some changes to appeal to the changing face of America. This isn't just in reference to race but to socio-economics as well. The Rebubs want to preserve the republic, by definition, therefore many of there policies are conservative. Democrats want to preserve the democracy, people's rights and freedoms which cause there own set of problems. In any case, Seesler's comment, editorial and subjective in nature, slipped up and injected a politically charged comment regarding Sotomayor. We, citizens, white, black, and brown, all have a different perspective on what we see as a result of our experiences and values. They won't get solved here.

Reed Smoot, Bronson Cutting. Senators in the 1930's had some awesome names. Yes I'm a dork and read the wiki article.

Morality legislation has always had a tinge of the ridiculous to me, it's hard to take it seriously. Can't deny how deadly serious it is in politics though, which I guess is a reflection of how the majority of the country feels right? At least thats the theory.

Did Adam mention the video game industry being big money in a time of economic crisis factor? I think he did. To me that seems like it would have more impact on censorship than anything else.

I agree Sess, the Columbine tragedy really was when games were come down on hard. Though it was actually Doom the killers played, not GTA :)
I actually graduated from Columbine, one of the shooters was my neighbor and some people I know died. Do I blame video games and am I an advocate for censorship? Absolutely not. I gave a speech relating my connection to the tragedy and how video games are not to be blamed for poor parenting, and the behavior of a sociopath !

Man Sess, your last 4 SOAPBOX'S have put me to sleep.
I always enjoyed hearing you talk about games.
Can you please talk about games again.
Or at least when you feel like ranting, will you at least rant about a game or at a game.
You just come across preachy lately.
It be cool if you got on your soapbox and talked about the greedy price point ($59.99) HARMONIX and ACTIVISTION on putting on GH5 and the BEATLES game for the Wii.
I miss the old SESS, please return him.

    Great soapbox.

By the way, what was the game in the background on Adam's left/our right? I know the opposite was GTA 4. What was the game with the platforming gopher? Looked amusing.

Meh... I'm not getting into the politics that have popped up because of the fox news comment... I'm agreeing with Sessler because I do think politicians have more important things to worry about... If the video games have any problems right now, it'll be from women posing as Kyle's mom from South Park. And Jack Thompson will be whispering in their ears.

Maybe if some parents raised their kids the right way, it would be easy for a most kids to play a game like GTA. Ive been playing GTA since I was 13 and now im 22 going on 23 and the way I was raised by my mom made it to where I knew the difference between reality and a videogame. Dont blame the game, blame the ignorance of the individual.

adam i respect Your knowledge of the gaming industry but not your view on politics i suggest keeping to the games and not bringing politics into this, politics are a dirty business and shouldnt be brought into most conversation

in most cases on tv or on the radio them censoring out words makes it more apparent that the word is there. like if there is a "bad" word in the song or on a show you either hear nothing for a second or a loud beep. plus i heard my dad say fk many times before i noticed that it was censored out on tv. and BTW if you have a computer you children probably have or will see p*rn

Before listening to this I was very much in the camp of believing that until the age of 17 or 18 parents should have the power to withhold film, video games, books, etc from their child but when seen as purely information and as a way of forcing parents to parent I've changed my views. Thank you for this soapbox, I definitely agree with you on GTA4 and that someone will eventually come to give "that run away video game industry" their "just desserts."

    Keep up the good work.

    P.S.
You could have mentioned the Handley Case and rape game ban but those almost warrant their own videos I think.

Did Sessler just diss the moon landing?!.....Dude...IT'S THE MOON! Do you know how great that is?! Seriously....it's off the planet! That is something to be proud about.

And from a geek standpoint: If it wasn't for that, we wouldn't have great things like Star Wars, Star Trek, Mass Effect....and pretty much anything thing else that deals with aliens or space.
