Realtime Worlds Considering Various Subscription Models For APB

If you managed to watch David Jones’ APB presentation from this year’s Develop conference without thinking, “I must play this, please,” then I suggest putting out an APB for your joy center.

Anyway, Jones and his team are doing some truly impressive things with their crime-based MMO, but right now, the biggest question mark has to do with the game’s monthly subscription model. When VG247 pressed Jones about it at Develop, Jones was as cagey as ever, saying, “We’re not going the normal ‘you have to subscribe to play the game every month’ rout. What we haven’t said is which route we are going, and in some respects we’re still looking.”

This seems to suggest that the game could feature some kind of “pay for as much as you play” model, which would certainly benefit those less hardcore fans intrigued by the overall concept of the game, but who maybe don’t want to make it a lifestyle like more dedicated MMO players might. I for one would love this kind of sliding pay scale, because I’m not an MMO person, but from what I've seen of this game so far, I might just have to pull the trigger when the game is released early next year.

What kind of subscription model would you like to see for APB?

well as many have said already Guild Wars worked and still works, they are doing just fine with their subscription method and i hope all others get an idea from it. I do understand that having a Pay by Month contract will give you more options, maybe better play, lots of more instruments to use while battling but in reality what Guild Wars had and still offers is pretty enjoyable especially for those non hardcore MMO gamers (like myself, who plays once a month)

    From APB's site:
Will there be console ports? Or a Linux or Mac client?

We re just starting to evaluate opportunities for a console port but do not have anything to announce yet. There will not be a Linux or Mac client.

    From EA:
    PC
    Early 2010

I used to play a MMOs but lately haven't found any good ones. Hopefully this will change that, and as far as the payment plan, i'd like to see two methods, 1 where you pay the usual set amount monthly, and a second where you pay for how much you play. Lets say you play about 3 hours worth then you'd only pay for those 3 hours, mayb like 30-50 cents per hour or sometin. No more than a dollar per hour cuz for us hardcore gamers you might play @ least 40 hours a week and lets say the initial cost of the game is like 10 dollars a month, that wuld suck....

If they throw in Sith Force powers I will definitely play. For those that played arcades games and dropped dollar after dollar on SFIV and others and didn't get anywhere this much gameplay quit your bitching. If you want it pay whatever they ask. If you don't want it don't pay it. Just quit whining. Get a job or quit playing. This is a business and very few MMOs make money. Hopefully they won't try to gut the consumer but they still have to make a profit to keep it going. And Xbox live is just a server to play games on not a free game machine. I own both systems and the Playstation network is as good as what you paid for which is nothing. Less than $5 a month is not a bad price for a good server. So either pay or make your parents pay or shut up.

The same as LoTRO please. I like a lifetime subscription for one-price as an option. It leaves all the others open also, 1, 3 or 6 month. That way I don't have to pay anymore for it ever again. All the content on the expansions costs no more. The free-to-play option is fine but the issue with that is the fact that all the smaller items cost money and to get the REALLY good stuff, it can cost alot more than even a multi-year subscription. Conquer Online, a Korean free-to-play MMO comes to mind.

My brother played that religously until recently the developer could no longer support it. The items could be gained and many "high-level" incremental improvement items used CPs, Conquer Points, formerly Dragon Balls (no relation apparently to the cartoon series.) Those CPs had to be bought in packs for $15.99 for 7 dragon balls. Now the limit per month per credit card was 10 times per month at that price. Now my brother paid more money for me to buy more for him, so thats 20 times a month. so he would regularly spend 300 a month on this game and not think twice about it.

I attempted to convince him of the stupidity of his logic to no avail. He could have paid for 5 years of WoW or any other monthly MMO and had MUCH more fun for much less money! Use this example as a warning, nay, as a tool for how much money you can blow on "free-to-play" MMOs. I like the philosophy of "I can do what I want with my money," but don't be so quick to think its good thing! PSNs free-to-play also comes to mind as another situation. That opinion is reserved for another time.

    How about NONE!

There are plenty of other great games about to hit the market that will be free that we can ignore APB without regret if we have to pay more to play.,

Guess they haven't learned from Phantasy Star U.

a "weekend warriors" model, that would be good. like $5 to play Friday 12:01AM to Monday 11:59PM every weekend of the month. i would totally play if they did that cause i have like no time during the week : ( or they could just do a "pay for what you play" where they charge like 20 cents per hour of play or something.
and to all the people that want it to be free; so do I! but i know i wouldn't like it as much in the long run. the subscriptions go to keeping the servers up, fix bugs and make expansions. that being said the expansions should be free, i shouldn't have to pay just for a few more guns and a stupid hat.

I hate paying for MMOs. Not getting free Internet is bad enough.

I have to agree with purewitz, setting out expansions like in Guild Wars is a good idea.
