Remember back in May when California managed to get its anti-violent videogame statute (which was signed by governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and then found to be unconstitutional by five separate court rulings) onto the docket of the United States Supreme Court? Well, we’re still waiting to hear what the highest court in the land has to say about it, but in the meantime, here’s a rather amusing take on the whole ordeal.
As GamePolitics reports, First Amendment attorney Robert Corn-Revere recently told Broadcasting & Cable, “In 2009, the killer cyborg turned governor has materialized in the present from the past in a plot to undermine the First Amendment.” (Is it me, or does that sound like a sweet game plot?...No?...It’s just me?....Fine. Jerks.)
Corn-Revere continued:
“If California is successful, it will open the door to regulate not just video games, but a wide range of speech that is currently protected under the First Amendment.”

Shouldnt parents be more responsible. They should know what content is in a video game without havin to ban it. I even get parents askin me in EBgames that what does rated "M" mean! Come on! look at the friggin case. The damn game case says sexual content and blood and gore. If you dont want ur little innocent 8 year old child who will ultimately learn what all that stuff later in life then dont buy it! EVEN THE FRIGGIN COVER PICTURE HAS A HINT OF VIOLENCE. PARENTS SHOULD KNOW IF A PICTURE HAS PEOPLE KILLIN EACH OTHER THAT THEY DONT HAVE TO GET IT. SO FOR GAMERS WHO KNOW WHAT TO BUY DONT HAVE TO HAVE THAT FRIGGIN "M" RATING BLOCKING US FROM REALLY GOOD GAMES!

P.S.- I am glad I do not live in California, although I feel for my gaming brothers and sisters that do.

You know how this all could be fixed? By the parents doing there job's. It's the parents and the game stores faults. A 13 year old kid just does'nt have $60 laying around, so it's the parents giving them the money. If the parents of the 12 to 16 year old kids that dont work and are able to buy a $60 game took two min. to see what it was, i dont think you would have this bill.
When gta4 came out i was at a game store (i Dont know if i can say their name or not) but the people in front of us were getting the game also and the girl at the counter told her mom that the game was rated M and the mom didnt know. Well to make it short the kid that look about 12 didnt get the game. Its good that the companie dose that.

We all knew this was going to happen at some point. You saw this with each generation, the elders trying to stop something because they can't comprehend what it means. Video games have come a far way in very little time. At some point video games will control the mainstream entertainment business. Let s face it we had this problem with color television, nudity in movies and now blood in video games. We are witnessing games become the standard to tell a story, drama, action, adventure is all part of this now. For the first time in history we are provided an immersive experience through the world of the characters we play. Movies can t do that and now Hollywood is scared.
I think I just started a conspiracy theory.

there is no point to doing this. the video games are just a scapegoat. if kids or adults want to kill others they will. they just want to blame something so people feel sorry for them. the killer just wants to feel like it wasn't there fault,it was all the video games.if someone is dumb enough to kill because it happens in a video game we just need to get rid of all fiction. you don't want kids thinking they can fly like peter pan or superman and jump off the roof so get rid of that.parents don't want to take the blame either for not being parents either so after the fact of there kid causing such a crime they want to say it was the video games(it use to be the music)plus aren't the parents the ones who buy these mature games for there underaged kids?parents are lazy now-a-days. they don't even hold there kids. they just strap them to your backs or chest like a bag and put them in front of a tv.don't punish the masses for a few idiots doing something they would have already done even if they didn't have video games.

@Chupacabras_X - the reply button doesn't work for me. (Explorer bad?)
If you read JohnKiller118's post a few lines up, you'd see that game retailers already do this - responsible ones anyway. I've been at numerous stores where parents brought M-rated games to the counter telling the cashier it was a present. Then the cashier would always caution them about the content of the game, but it was still the choice of the parent.
The bill is just redundant. There may be no law that says a kid can't buy an M-rated game, but publishers and retailers take ESRB ratings very seriously. It took a long time for the industry to adapt a rating system that everyone was happy with. This proposed bill wastes all that effort.
--and I think there is already a penalty for selling M-rated games to minors, but I haven't done the research.

i saw the episode of Pen n Teller i cant miss one, great informative shows and do open peoples eye and the video game one was amazing, i was depress to see the kid cry after the credit. but man, their information is just so amazin and i bet those that still watch it believe that video games have a huge impact in violence, but is a 2 sided coin and we all have our own view, mine, i see no connection, fantasy is different than reality

Ok, let's say a parent have decided that I will not allow my child to buy or play GTA IV or SAINTS ROW 2.
Good for the parent, right?
So my kid gets a friend of his or raises the money on his own and goes and buys the game on his own.
Now, if there is no restriction on a retailer selling a game to someone under 17, then the parent has been thwarted and the game will now get played.
If the retailer looks at the money and says "Sorry kid, you got to be 17 to buy this game", then what is really the problem with that?

Old people and Republicans really need to piss off with crap like this.

Yea us kids we wont be controled like u adults do we will continue to play the games as long as we live no matter wat you do
-John-
I tried to get Metal Gear Solid 2, but I couldn't get it because I didn't have a parent with me.
In the same mall, I got Postal: The Movie. It was Rated-R. They didn't even ask me for an ID.
So, its okay for me, a 14 year old minor, to buy a movie that makes fun of 9/11, has onscreen child murder, Verne Troyer raped by monkeys, and Dave Foley's penis, but when I try to buy a game that has a few blood effects, I get the Governator on my ass.
The irony of this situation? "Postal: The Movie" came with a M-Rated video game, "Postal 2!"
Kids will always watch/play/see what they re not supposed to. It s part of growing up. We ll continue to get free refunds from hookers in GTA, just like how kids watched The Terminator as a kid, and not even Jack Thompson or the Governator is going to stop us, so long as Free Speech prevails.

god another attempt to control children just because our age is lower then yours doesnt mean you can pin every thing on us seriously pick on someone your own size stop controling us you say we are to immature you know why were to immature because you and the government wont let us grow up im 15 years old i have adhd and every one automaticly thinks im a out of control teenager i cant drive i cant vote i cant buy a good movie i cant buy pretty much any game thats good i cant buy spray paint to finish my school project i cant even buy glue for school and the cussing thing so what its a word that someone felt should make it bad word honestly its a word it doesnt mean anything but you adults feel the need to control us kids and it pisses me off you think we dont see violence or sex look outside im sure you can see something that has to do with that hey you can turnn on the news and there you go there is 24 hour violence our schools teach us violence but thats ok as long as we dont have fun while seeing it cuz if we are having fun shooting aliens or eneimies on call of duty or medal of honor thats bad for us and teaches us violence i think it bs i hate bein told what to do just cause im a kid and gambling well you say were not old enough because well just spend all our money what about all those people that go and spend all of their money and their kids money and wifes money and their kids college money but thats not the same because he has been on earth for 21 years so if you control what games we play even more ill have to think that every thing that we learned about the U.S bein free and a democracy is bull oh and we cant even vote like what the hell we live here to i think we deserve to decide our futures to so please everyone that reads this be nice to us kids we are people to we deserve everything you have too oh and california good luck you guys arnt going to last very long so thank you for listining

People need to be left to make the right decision and the government should be left out of moral issues.
