inFamous

With the June NPD numbers due out shortly, it's time for analysts to begin estimating and predicting the numbers. Of specific interest last month: the informal competition between Prototype and inFAMOUS, two completely different games that people couldn't seem to tell apart.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich is estimating that Prototype outsold inFAMOUS by 90%, but predicts that inFAMOUS outsold Prototype on the PS3 by 35% and could increase that margin to 50% at some point in the future.

What does this tell us? It makes more sense to go multiplatform. Prototype is available on three platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, PC), while inFAMOUS is a PS3 exclusive. Personally, I would have put a bit more focus on the difference in advertising campaigns and the performance of previous PS3 exclusives, but yes, multiplatform games generally make more money because the pool of available buyers is larger. It's simple math!

New Games This Week: Prototype

What would be good to know, however, is the budget of each game. Since Activision likely spent more to develop Prototype across three platforms, their profit margin might not be all that bigger than Sony and Sucker Punch's. At the least, Sony needs to get its marketing game going (along with a price drop).

"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," said Divnich.

This is where I lose him (and gamers in general). The games are very different. Sure, they are both open-world "superhero" games, but they play nothing alike. At the core, Prototype is a melee-oriented game and inFAMOUS focuses on ranged combat. I don't blame Mr. Divnich, but it's the type of sentiment we need less of in gaming. This is the thinking that calls Halo and Call of Duty 'near identical' because they are both first-person shooters. People need to be educated on the differences between games that appear similar on the surface.

So, readers of TheFeed, did you purchase Prototype and/or inFAMOUS? Personally, I bought (and loved) inFAMOUS and also grabbed Prototype on the Xbox 360. I guess I fall into this prediction pretty nicely. Do you?

2 reasons I think developers make games, 1. to make money and 2. to create something that lots of people will get to play and enjoy. if you look at it that way it only makes sense to go multi-platform, because you will 1. make more money, and 2. more people will get to play your game. I never really understood the point of exclusives other than developers not wanting to go to the trouble of porting the game.

That being said I played prototype on 360 because I don't own a ps3, although to be honest I thought infamous looked like a better game. But prototype was still good, even though the storyline was kind of bland and hard to follow at types, I think the order they tell it in is pretty interesting though.

I really liked [prototype] at first but it got really boring kind of quick. It was the same thing over and over. inFAMOUS has been a blast though. I thought I would get tired of it but I still haven't.
Can we get an analysis on satisfied buyers?

Well DPsx7's fanboy comments aside, I bought InFamous and loved it. I was more interested in finishing the game than in prototype, which I have on 360. I am more interested on going on killing sprees in Prototype and don't really care about the story. I wouldn't mind if all games were multiplatfrom but PS3's exclusives make the system worth owning. I am not a stock holder in any of these companies so the sales figures don't mean much to me. Gamers FTW

People will buy a game for the system that they love the most, even if it isn't very good. I myself fell victim to this back when I owned a Nintendo Wii. Yet soon enough, it started collecting dust and I rarely played it... I would just watch youtube on it. I used to argue like the retarded fanboys on here in support of the Wii because I thought it was so great. You never see anyone doing that anymore, heh.

I've never played either Prototype or Infamous so I have no right to say which one is better than the other. I bet they're both great games though, and this childish bickering over which is better is just a stupid waste of time. If you like the game, play it... if you don't, take it back. That's all there is to it. Why would you come on here and say "Prototype sux infamous r so muc bettar!11"? Do you really think you're going to hurt anyone's feelings or get them to not play the game? Or are you really just the kind of shallow person who will shout negative nonsense about something just for fun?

I beat InFamous on medium difficulty with good guy Cole. After that I started playing Prototype on the 360. Got bored pretty fast so I went back to playing InFamous on the hardest setting using bad Cole. That game was awesome (except for the last boss that took like 2.5 hours to beat)! I m now starting over on Prototype. Just can t seem to get into it

It's probably been said before, but I do love the constant presence of "mow more lawns."

Some of us reading these articles and subsequently commenting on them are in our mid-twenties and don't exactly have the time to devote to temporary careers in landscaping because we're busy spending our leisure time pursuing other things.

Exclusive games are important to the gaming world. Not only are they a kind of marketing ploy to get you buy a particular consule, but also, if there weren't exclusives, what would be the point of having different platforms. Sony would have wasted all their money developing the PS3, if all of their games had to be downgraded to the specs of XBOX and the Wii. And a lot of the Wii games would not be half as fun without the numb-chucks. I think as long as there are separate platforms, there will be exclusive games for them, and rightfully so.

no duh it sold more, its multi-plat! who conducts these stupid surveys? and who's idea was it to report such useless information. Finally, inFamous is far superior to prototype.

Why would anyone buy a game for that disgusting 360? Exclusives are only going to become more numerous as the PS3's advantages are used. A lot of kids took the cheap way out buying a 360 early, and now they're finding out all the best games are elsehwere. Mow a few more lawns, trade in the 360, and get PS3 already. You won't regret it unless you're a fanboy.

I bought Infamous, not Prototype yet.

I picked them both up for the PS3. I beat inFAMOUS which was really good. I loved the story, missions, and the graphics better in inFAMOUS; but I can just kill for hours in Prototype. A lot more upgrades in Prototype; it's just pure mayhem and destruction.

I bought Infamous, played through it twice and I'll probably never play it again. I should have rented it, not because it's bad, juse because it would have suited me better. I think it deserved a 4/5, it was cool but it wasn't a run away awesome game.

I rented Prototype for 360 today and will be trying it out in a few hours.

From now on I think I will only buy games with online multiplayer. Campaign only games just don't keep my interest.

I bought inFAMOUS day one and love it, I'm on my third play through. I rented Prototype and took it back the next day. inFAMOUS is sooooo much better. Anyway, of course multi plats sell better than exclusives.

I bought both infamous and prototype for my PS3 and they were BOTH awesome games. Yes, there are some similarities on the surface but these games truly are very different in terms of actual gameplay.
