With the June NPD numbers due out shortly, it's time for analysts to begin estimating and predicting the numbers. Of specific interest last month: the informal competition between Prototype and inFAMOUS, two completely different games that people couldn't seem to tell apart.
EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich is estimating that Prototype outsold inFAMOUS by 90%, but predicts that inFAMOUS outsold Prototype on the PS3 by 35% and could increase that margin to 50% at some point in the future.
What does this tell us? It makes more sense to go multiplatform. Prototype is available on three platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, PC), while inFAMOUS is a PS3 exclusive. Personally, I would have put a bit more focus on the difference in advertising campaigns and the performance of previous PS3 exclusives, but yes, multiplatform games generally make more money because the pool of available buyers is larger. It's simple math!

What would be good to know, however, is the budget of each game. Since Activision likely spent more to develop Prototype across three platforms, their profit margin might not be all that bigger than Sony and Sucker Punch's. At the least, Sony needs to get its marketing game going (along with a price drop).
"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," said Divnich.
This is where I lose him (and gamers in general). The games are very different. Sure, they are both open-world "superhero" games, but they play nothing alike. At the core, Prototype is a melee-oriented game and inFAMOUS focuses on ranged combat. I don't blame Mr. Divnich, but it's the type of sentiment we need less of in gaming. This is the thinking that calls Halo and Call of Duty 'near identical' because they are both first-person shooters. People need to be educated on the differences between games that appear similar on the surface.
So, readers of TheFeed, did you purchase Prototype and/or inFAMOUS? Personally, I bought (and loved) inFAMOUS and also grabbed Prototype on the Xbox 360. I guess I fall into this prediction pretty nicely. Do you?

I also bought InFamous(PS3) and PType(360) and Infamouns wins the battle hands down way more polished along with a better story and gameplay. Ptype is fun but boring its just meh for me.

I played both first, but infamouse did it for me, prototype story was wack, and its too much going on on it, my favorite thing about prototype was running up buildings heh

I have a PS3 and 360. I bought Prototype for my PS3 and I couldn't be bothered with Infamous. I tried the demo and was less then impressed. Oh well.

I bought and own both. Infamous is awesome and I was shocked by how great it was. Truly a AAA title and one of the best on the PS3. Prototype was OK, I was really let down by it. It wasn't bad, just no where near as good as Infamous.

Stupid comparison, why the heck are they comparing sales of 3 platforms to 1.
Everyone knows that multiplatform games sell more. If they wanna compare, they better compare individual console sales.
Haven't played Proto but from my friend's testimony, the missions are very redundant. I got inFamous and I'm pretty much inloved with the gameplay.
The thing is inFamous is developed to take advantage of PS3's capabilities. Proto is merely in PC environment.

Seems as if the new thumb system is working as intended *looks at DPzx7* :D. Gotta love it now that you can read an article about both PS3 and 360 games without having to sort through mass amounts of fanboy-flameware drivel.
Also yes, I purchased Prototype for the 360 and I am loving it. Do to my unlucky habit of trusting my things with friends, my PS3 is no more. When I do buy a new one though (most likely around September) I shall be sure to pick up a copy of InFamous (I loved the demo before I lent my console to my friend).
Mr. Divnich needs to actually play the games though, not just compare them based on what he's heard (which sound like it is the case). Indeed it is like comparing Halo and the call Of Duty franchise.

I have both systems and both Infamous and Prototype. I also like both, but Infamous seemed much more polished. I also liked the character growth in Infamous better. The reality is that there has to be "exclusive" games for each system, or what would be the point of having multiple platforms if they all play the same games (Blu-Ray aside)? The real question is did Infamous help sell more PS3 systems?

I think it's almost impossible to not compare 2 different games that have similar level and character designs, as well as similar gameplay. The only way a lot of people could tell the games apart would be to play them. If they were truly two completely different and unique games they wouldn't be mentioned in an article saying that they are two completely different games.
The multiplatform thing is common sense as far as making money goes. Thats why once exclusive franchises like Final Fantasy, and Metal Gear Solid are going multiplatform, they don't really care about the fanboys who are gonna buy 1 copy when they could get their games out to more people to create more fanboys on more platforms.. yay!

Well that's about as obvious as saying the sky is blue. Anyway I own both games and find that inFamous is far better. Prototype got extremely repetitive and boring and the challenges presented in the game were extremely uneven. I got tired of constantly killing the same squads of copters and soldiers and even more tired of battling the infected mutant hunters. The graphics in the game were also incredibly dull which is a shame. I felt like I was running around a Lego Land city with how blocky everything was. I beat it and didn't find the ending very satisfying either. inFamous kept you guessing and while it isn't a perfect game I think the quality is a lot higher than Prototype's. If you haven't purchased Prototype and are curious I'd suggest renting it. inFamous might be a better and more attractive choice for your money if you're looking for a deeper gameplay experience.

Hey, I enjoy my Wii just as much as my PS3 with over 45 games for each at the moment. Include my expansive collection of classic games and I'm no fanperson. My biggest gripe is with those who bought a 360 and think they're getting the next gen experience and then trashing the other 2 without having seen why they're better. Most of these people are new gamers that haven't learned how to avoid M$'s shady and pathetic tactics.
Firm_B
i liked them both

I really like sandlot type of games so Infamous is one i'd of liked to see on xbox. Haven't tried Prototype yet, but i am really having fun w/Red Faction. At least we have Crackdown 2 to look forward to.
funkytown109
i bought red faction guerilla instead. its better than both of those
RRODisBack
COD4 sold more than Halo 3 but not on the Xbox. What does that tell us? It's better to go multi platform.
callofdutycrewmember
prototype is way better then infamous
riddik22
However if the point of this story was to point out ridiculous comparisons between games and needless predictions then bravo leahy
Secondtooth
what a shame ..InFamous is the better game.
riddik22
Why not write a report about call of duty selling more than halo? It just seems implied that a multi-plat will sell more than an exclusive. come on treat us feed readers with a little more respect and tell that so called analyst to blow it out his a**. ;)
Wozman23
Like a few others i bought InFamous and i'm waiting for Prototype from Gamefly. At first glance, Prototype doesn't have that unique factor that InFamous does. It just looks like Activision took a Hulk game and gave the character a different skin. I'll have to see if they prove me wrong when i finally get to play it.
Xechatigs
Oh god, that would be the worst if sucker-punch went to Microsoft. I like my Sly Cooper at the best quality possible.
