With the June NPD numbers due out shortly, it's time for analysts to begin estimating and predicting the numbers. Of specific interest last month: the informal competition between Prototype and inFAMOUS, two completely different games that people couldn't seem to tell apart.
EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich is estimating that Prototype outsold inFAMOUS by 90%, but predicts that inFAMOUS outsold Prototype on the PS3 by 35% and could increase that margin to 50% at some point in the future.
What does this tell us? It makes more sense to go multiplatform. Prototype is available on three platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, PC), while inFAMOUS is a PS3 exclusive. Personally, I would have put a bit more focus on the difference in advertising campaigns and the performance of previous PS3 exclusives, but yes, multiplatform games generally make more money because the pool of available buyers is larger. It's simple math!

What would be good to know, however, is the budget of each game. Since Activision likely spent more to develop Prototype across three platforms, their profit margin might not be all that bigger than Sony and Sucker Punch's. At the least, Sony needs to get its marketing game going (along with a price drop).
"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," said Divnich.
This is where I lose him (and gamers in general). The games are very different. Sure, they are both open-world "superhero" games, but they play nothing alike. At the core, Prototype is a melee-oriented game and inFAMOUS focuses on ranged combat. I don't blame Mr. Divnich, but it's the type of sentiment we need less of in gaming. This is the thinking that calls Halo and Call of Duty 'near identical' because they are both first-person shooters. People need to be educated on the differences between games that appear similar on the surface.
So, readers of TheFeed, did you purchase Prototype and/or inFAMOUS? Personally, I bought (and loved) inFAMOUS and also grabbed Prototype on the Xbox 360. I guess I fall into this prediction pretty nicely. Do you?

I haven't played prototype yet but I hear its good. I agree with you though as most of my friends say its "better" than infamous however to me it was like comparing apples to oranges. Sure their both round and about the same size but everything else is different!
On that note I do own Infamous and I enjoyed every bit of the game. I can't wait for a follow up cause the game had legs !!
Big_red42
duuuuuuuuuuuu!! of coerce it did because people wouldn't buy a game they can't use.

I don't have a PS3 but my friend does and Infamous is better than prototype.

I own a PS3 and bought both and inFamous is amazing i still cant get enough of it, but after i beat Prototype in 2 days (wasn't even tryin 2) i haven't touched it since im really thinking about trading it in at gamestop. Does anybody know it's worth?
ProjektX13
well i took infamous back and traded it in for credit towards MW2, but i kept Prototype, i loved every moment of leveling Alex up and having all the devastator attacks. really freaking sick!

ive been playing inFamous over at my friends house and i have to say its pretty awesome. We already made it almost to the end on an inFamous character, pretty sweet. Ive been looking to rent Prototype...but there are no copies to rent, everyone keeps snatching them up.

I don't think you need to be an analyst to realize that Prototype would sell more, it's a multiplatform game...however...I would like to know if there is info on how many copies were returned compared to that of Infamous, that may spark some interest haha!
komradkyle
this is obvious but I would buy imfamous for 360

Would have been way more interesting if it had just been an XBox 360 exclusive... Get rid of the PC numbers... (I still want it on PC lmfao) But then it really would have shown what the numbers would have looked like, for basically the same game on two different consoles... Personally, I think both games were great and in a market where good games are rare, this is a nice sight to see two in a non-holiday quarter.

I still havent bought Prototype or played it. Money is tight in my family right now so I havent been able to buy any new games since I got inFAMOUS. That was actually a bday present from my wife and kids. I loved inFAMOUS and its one game I go back to every so often. I knew Prototype would sell more since it is a multiplat title but it really is the exclusives that set the systems apart. Ill give Prorotype a shot one day but it may not be till after the fall sicne Im trying to save some money for some of the games coming out then.

I bought inFamous simply because it looked awesome and when I heard about the Uncharted: Among Theives beta, I had to get it.

I got Infamous and am impressed with it. I am very pleased to see a classic science fiction plot device used in a game's story so well. I haven't played Prototype yet. I will probably rent it.
Exclusive games are definitely higher quality than multi-platform games because the team is able to focus all their efforts on developing for one platform and not have to worry about developing for multiple platforms. When developers are able to do that, they are able to polish the game more and sell a better product.
Sector1286
i thought that prototype was pretty good but wen i played infamous i couldnt believe it. infamous is a system seller in my opinion and i am w8ing fer the price drop fer the ps3 then im getting one!
07howard
Forget infamous, where the hell is sly 4?
ErrorCodeOfDeath
Exclusives all the way BABY!!!
inFamous....Im on the second run through on evil this time.
They are both 2 different games....cause prototype looked meh to me...no interest in it, I already played the Hulk game.
Mr_Eko_73
After playing both games I have to give Infamous the nod. Only because I pretty much already played Prototype back when I play "Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction" (If you haven't played that, I highly recommend it) I do like the feel of freedom with Prototype. Being able to cover miles and miles of territory with leaps and bounds was really fun. But I think Infamous had a more lush environment and overall was prettier to look at. Both games are very different in terms of play style. If they weren't' both released at the same time I don't think most would try to compare them. Its like when gamers try to compare GOW and Killzone. They're just different games.

What I want to know is how many games inFamous sold, I hope it did ok the guys who made it worked on it for 3 years.

Shame on you, TheFeed. You consistently try to shine a light on gaming as art or as something other than a corporate money machine and then you talk about these differences only in terms of overall sales. I think it's a more interesting idea to analyze why inFamous beat Prototype on PS3. My guess is it's because inFamous looks better, has better controls, an actual storyline going for it, and thematically just kind of works. Prototype I might have enjoyed had I not played inFamous. But since I did, Prototype just felt like a Xbox or PS2 game by comparison. It had it's moments, but there were too many cheap deaths, lame story elements, bad graphics, and terrible controls (anyone who claims you can land from a jump with any precision is flat out lying). Sure, if inFamous were multi-platform it probably would have moved more units. But that would almost certainly have delayed the game or caused it to suffer in quality.
From my experience, PS3 exclusives stand out in performance and graphics and overall design (from story to art style and such). 360 exclusives tend to stand out in gameplay and replayability (MP or not). It's a careful balancing act, but in the end I buy both. And frankly I tend to enjoy exclusives over multi-platform titles because the focus on getting one system right trumps trying to make the same control set feel natural on varying controllers/keyboards/mice/wii remotes. But that's just me.
