Analyst: Prototype Sold 90% More Than inFAMOUS, But Didn't Outsell It On PS3

inFamous

With the June NPD numbers due out shortly, it's time for analysts to begin estimating and predicting the numbers. Of specific interest last month: the informal competition between Prototype and inFAMOUS, two completely different games that people couldn't seem to tell apart.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich is estimating that Prototype outsold inFAMOUS by 90%, but predicts that inFAMOUS outsold Prototype on the PS3 by 35% and could increase that margin to 50% at some point in the future.

What does this tell us? It makes more sense to go multiplatform. Prototype is available on three platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, PC), while inFAMOUS is a PS3 exclusive. Personally, I would have put a bit more focus on the difference in advertising campaigns and the performance of previous PS3 exclusives, but yes, multiplatform games generally make more money because the pool of available buyers is larger. It's simple math!

New Games This Week: Prototype

What would be good to know, however, is the budget of each game. Since Activision likely spent more to develop Prototype across three platforms, their profit margin might not be all that bigger than Sony and Sucker Punch's. At the least, Sony needs to get its marketing game going (along with a price drop).

"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," said Divnich.

This is where I lose him (and gamers in general). The games are very different. Sure, they are both open-world "superhero" games, but they play nothing alike. At the core, Prototype is a melee-oriented game and inFAMOUS focuses on ranged combat. I don't blame Mr. Divnich, but it's the type of sentiment we need less of in gaming. This is the thinking that calls Halo and Call of Duty 'near identical' because they are both first-person shooters. People need to be educated on the differences between games that appear similar on the surface.

So, readers of TheFeed, did you purchase Prototype and/or inFAMOUS? Personally, I bought (and loved) inFAMOUS and also grabbed Prototype on the Xbox 360. I guess I fall into this prediction pretty nicely. Do you?

No doubt in my mind. PROTOTYPE is one of the best games i've ever played. wouldnt mind playing infamous. did they have any idea there would be a debate on something as pointless as what game is funner? If you like the game, then that's it..still it IS true that selling between the two kinda interferes with each team ehh my opinion :/

i think the point of this was that since sucker punch kept their game exclusive, then obviously they spent a whole hell of a lot less money...and since they focused on one platform, that happens to have the most power for game developing, their game turned out to be a lot better. and if it outsells prototype by 50% on PS3, then chances are infamous could have made more of a profit than prototype.

inFamous was amazing! I will play through it again and again. I have only played a little portion of Prototype but I wasn't impressed. You're right, these two games are completely different, but if someone was to watch gameplay footage for each they might get confused. they would differentiate the games by "the one with the lightning" and "the one with the blood"

the two main characters look similar, and the settings are similar, so i can see where people would get confused.

does anyone know of a study that shows if a company makes more money selling multi-platform simultaneously? I was just wondering if it would make sense for inFamous to be released multi in the future or would it make alot less money since it is already out on PS3

Beat inFamous both ways, got the platinum trophy, couldn't put the freaking game down!

Prototype, on the other hand, was perfectly decent but I just found it to be kinda bland, half-assed and overall mediocre.

Prototype to me is like a X-rated version of Spidey Web of Shadows and Hulk Ultimate Destruction.

this is almost golden, you have more people neautral commenting then random fanboys. It brings a tear to my eye. I really enjoyed Infamous myself. I cancelled my prototype because it didnt seem like it was worth the money just yet. I might try it if it hits the greatest hits.

These Analyst get pay just to make the easiest prediction ever? Clap Clap Clap. You go analyst I didnt even know that Protype would out sell Infamous. Very impressive. So what's next on your prediction? Let me give Sony is going to have a price drop next year? Not many people will be getting the new psp becuase the price is a bite too high. And that they should of put cellphone capabilities on it?

i always knew infamous would sell poorly, the ps3 fanbase do not like to buy games, period. well, there's also the fact that generic games tend to not sell well too.

Wow G4tv are preety stupid!! Of course Prototype will out sell Infamous becuase its Mulitplatform ooOoo G4 is tring to bash exclusive games from Sony once again but Fail. You know what we need is a rating system for you writers so I can give you guys the worst rating ever! Just becuase it get sold more doesnt make it the best games. Its already proven that Infamous is better than Prototype. I said better not way better but better.... Enough said I have fun Playing infamous. Beside alot of people buy 2nd hand.. What they need is to have each game being register so that anyone that buys 2nd hand games can't play. But than that would be bad for people like me that rather pay 40 buck for a used game than 60 bucks for a new game.

Actually... Exclusives are not for to make big sales, their purpose is to SELL more consoles. Infamous was not a system seller, but the game was way better polished then Prototype and way better itself.

Sony problem is about the establishing of their exclusives even if they have better hardware and very smart, creative studios, they don't present their games like Microsoft do.
No Sony exclusives didn't made that success as an overrated Halo franchise did. Even Metal Gear Solid 4 sold for like 4.5 million copies.

But it is sad about gaming community, i think Heavy Rain will sell not better then Infamous, because gamers are freaks and love the sequels more then new unique gameplay and creative games, so if they will make Infamous 2 game then it will sell better, but i want the real games not the sequels, but in term of buiseness, new games and multiplatform games sells not that good as the sequels or multi.

PS: It is the same story with Little Big Planet. The best game, 2 million sales.

Well of course Prototype outsold inFamous. Its kinda obvious because there are more platforms for Prototype. Prototype is on PC xbox360 and PS3 while inFamous is only on PS3. Really stupid news

I never played "Prototype" so I will not judge that game. I did purchase "inFAMOUS" though and thought it was a very good game. I'm on my second play through and it's a lot of fun! Hopefully, I'll be able to purchase "Prototype" soon.

So, by their logic, robbing two banks gets you more money than just robbing one!?! RIDICULOUS!
