The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall's Map Is 62 Square Miles -- How's That Compare To Oblivion?

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, which Bethesda Softworks just released for free as part of the game's anniversary is big. Like, really big. How big? Try 62 square miles. Even though Bethesda's RPG series has appeared to become bigger with each sequel, the opposite is actually the case; Daggerfall's much, much bigger than The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

I checked in with Bethesda to do a little math. Here's how it breaks down, but keep in mind these numbers are approximations, not exact calculations:

  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion -- 16 square miles
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind -- 6 square miles
  • The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall -- 62 square miles

Bethesda wasn't able to come up with the milage for The Elder Scrolls: Arena, the first game. The numbers, as Bethesda pointed out to me, can be a bit misleading, though. For example: much of Daggerfall's content was randomly generated.

"Because we change the scale of each game," explained marketing VP Pete Hines, "the size doesn’t necessarily compare from game to game. In other words, how fast you can move across the world has a lot to do with how big it seems."

Thanks to Internet magic, I tracked down fan-made maps of each game, too! Check it out:
