Billy Berghammer Interviews BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka »

Epic Games was the first to truly open the door to user-generated content with Unreal Tournament III on PlayStation 3, which could adopt all user modifications. BioWare, a company with strong PC roots, will be releasing modification tools for their upcoming Dragon Age: Origins, and while speaking to Billy, BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka said the studio hopes to bring some of that content to consoles -- including Xbox 360.

"We're exploring ways to bring some of the fan-created content over to the other platforms, as well," said Muzyka. "Obviously it's easier on the PC because we can get the tools out in the fans hands -- they're already out on beta form, so the fans are working away and making all kinds of cool stuff for each other and it's exciting to see that. Maybe we can bring some of that to the console systems, we'll have to work obviously with Microsoft and Sony, some of those details still have to be worked out to make that happen, but I'd love to that happen, it'd be great."

The hurdle is really Microsoft, not Sony; the latter proved it didn't have a problem with all-access user-generated content by stamping approval over Unreal Tournament III. That didn't happen with the Xbox 360 version of the same game, though BioWare believes their strong relationship with Microsoft means a compromise can be found.

"Microsoft's been a great partner to work with over the years," he said. "As you know, we worked with them on Jade Empire and Mass Effect and we're talking actively with them about all kinds of cool stuff we're doing in the future, as well. I think they'd be excited to see it happen. Obviously, there's some technology hurdles we have to jump [through] together with them to make it work, but we'll see where it goes."

It doesn't sound very likely BioWare is looking to open the flood gates for user-generated content, but move one step at a time, maybe bringing over a best-of-the-best collection or something along those lines.

It would be interesting to see what kind of mods a person could create on a console. It's one of the things that I miss from PC gaming. I enjoyed creating levels for N.O.L.F. and downloading mods for Vice City. I remember specifically the shopping cart mod. Nothing like picking up a date in a shopping cart. LOL.

Some mod are fun and some are ruining the game so it depends.

Yeah they could just say that the mods in the store do not have ESA ratings, and maybe just bung them all at 18 ratings and say they are not responsible for it. 360s have parental control now so parents should be responsible. Maybe they could put some ads out saying parents should engage parental control mode if they don't want their kids to access it, just to help out... But It's just like making a browser to surf the web- people can do what they like with it.

I'm hoping that LBP2 will have a mod planet, among other things. Maybe more games will have a section in the main menu that brings you to the SDK and an ingame browser
for scrolling through the mods, seeing forums, tutorials, all that stuff. I think they are worried it'll damage their economy coz people might just keep playing mods. But it's an incentive for developers to make better games and bring in new technology for modders with their games anyway, so it's fine.

I'm really enjoying Mass Effect 1 right now. It's very well written and the graphics are the best I've seen on the 360. Though I wish the framerate was 90 FPS. Not that I have any real problems with the game's current FPS, I just think it would be amazing to have great graphics and a great FPS.

Oh, and I would LOVE to have mods on consoles! Screw FOX News! If some kid makes a nude patch then so freakin' be it! I will not allow retarded activist groups, politicians that think violent video games is more importat then their freakin' economy, and stereotypes hold gaming back from being the dominant entertainment art form.

It's odd that there was so much heat over that stuff, when if you look at the modules/additions etc that people were able to make for Neverwinter Nights, and there was no outrage.

Lol, it'll never happen. As soon as some kid downloads the Nude Orgy mod the first week the game comes out it'll be all over FOX news as the biggest story in the nation since Mass Effect(quarter boob/half butt) and GTA 3(sex mod).

It would certainly be nice if they added mod support although knowing MS it would be a mod "store".

I wish that just once I could open a link and not see some stupid comment about how big a hard on someone has for their PS3 or 360.
