Did Mickey Mouse Screw Donald Duck Out Of The Lead Role In Kingdom Hearts?

It's no secret that Disney's Mickey Mouse has been shafting Donald Duck for decades. I never understood the rodent's motivation, but time and time again he's swerved his fowl friend. In a recent interview with Famitsu (translated by 1Up), Square Enix director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Disney wanted to cast Donald Duck as the leading character for the project that eventually became Kingdom Hearts.

"Square wanted to make a game starring Mickey Mouse, and Disney wanted a Donald Duck title. Meanwhile, I wanted neither. So I built a project plan for KH and began negotiating with both sides. That plan was largely what you see now; a game featuring lots of characters without focusing on any particular one."

After being regulated to second-string status in movies and television, video games could have been the medium that allowed Donald to have the spotlight all to himself. Instead, Mr. Mouse shafted him once again. What a rat bastard.

In your mind, would Donald Duck have worked as a lead in a Square Enix action RPG? Any other Disney characters work in that role?

I think Goofy would have been a good lead for the game because of his personality. His talking can get annoying sometimes, but overall he's a loveable character with a happy-go-lucky attitude!

Theres no definite way to decide who would be a better character. Me personally, I think Mickey's 'awsomeness' comes from the fact that you barely ever see him. Like there is a mystery and you never really get a sense of who the character is or what role he plays through the story (I haven't beaten KH2 just yet). Donald on the other hand... I Don't exactly like him. But that's just my personal opinion.

well of course mickey did. i think it's only because mickey speaks more clearly. but donald is working on it. i hear he is taking speech classes from tarzan. it's ok though because what mickey doesn't know is that donald got with mini in college.

Donald Duck wouldn't have worked well with the story because of his personality. He's impulsive, hot-headed, and annoying. But he worked well with Goofy as Sora's sidekicks. The game was good as it was and hope Square-Enix could follow it up with a third installment.

This thread's still going? It looks like the recent thread has been more favorable to videogame companies making their own original cartoonish characters (Rayman & the Raving Rabbids, De Blob, Blinx the Time Sweeper) than using established ones.

But given wishful thinking, there are tons of cartoons I'd like to see turned into good games. Give it a few years & maybe we'll see Donald, Goofy (who had a Goof Troop game for the SNES)& all the others cartoon 2nd fiddles star in their own games again.

It would be like Donald and Goofy just bummin' around the Disney movies without Sora, Riku, and Kairi! The 3rd party member is Squall(Leon)and Donald knows all the FF spells! There more references to Disney characters and they never find K.Mickey until the end of the series and don't meet Sora til' later on and there's no Roxas or Namine! Just Ducktales, Quack Attacks, and Toon Disney!

I'm going to have to say NO to both questions. My reason is this, I don't think that any Disney character would fit that role because all of Disney's characters are flat and you can not mold them to fit the game, there set and stone. Unlike a brand new character to where you can mold him any way you want to fit the game.

And I hate Donald's voice and would not get a game that he's starring.

Donald Duck is portrayed as someone a little different than the cartoon
but personally i think that they needed to bring another caracter maybe like goofey to be the main person so you have donald and mickey with you to have a better perspective of teh two most famous characters in disney

I've always been a Donald Duck fan. Anyone remember Quackshot on the Genesis? I loved that game.

Sorry but the Final Fantasy part is what keeps Kingdom Hearts awesome, honestly I wish they would just move away from Disney entirely. The story is strong enough to stand on its own.

I demand an area based on Howl's Moving Castle (since Disney owns the rights.) as well as some of the Pixar movies. Also the Final Fantasy Spin-offs need to come into play, why the lack of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance references?

Sorry Donald, but really, Mickey would have been better. You're awesome, but Mickey is still cooler. In Kingdom Hearts and in other media. Besides, it's Mickey. You can't beat Mickey.
