Fans who have been eagerly anticipating a new Superman film after the teasers that hit online a few months back, have been dealt what may be considered either a blessing or a slap in the face. The good news: The likelihood of a new Superman movie has gone up tremendously. The bad news: It seems that the soonest possible time that we will see it, is 2012 (When people will live in giant domes in the sky and travel in flying cars on the way to a day of work at Spacely's Space Sprockets.)
How did this turn of events come about? Well, it's a story filled with boring legal stuff that doesn't make for a good article. The gist of it is as follows: A bit of legal drama stirred up surrounding a recent lawsuit from the heirs of Superman creator co-creator, Jerry Siegel. The lawsuit was brought about by Joanne Siegel (his widow) and Laura Siegel Larson (his daughter) for damages from an alleged "sweetheart deal" of licensing fees paid by Warner Bros. to DC Comics (a partner of WB) which was allegedly below fair market value, thus depriving them of their percentage as co-owners of the legal rights. The court did not find things in their favor and determined that the fees were indeed within fair market value (and maintained the same for the deal between Warner and DC on the Smallville TV show.) HOWEVER --- acting per the agreement to avoid legitimizing the damages that the Siegels claim to have incurred, the court also ruled that Warner must commence filming on a new Superman film by 2011. So there you have it, the law has officially mandated a Superman sequel!
In that spirit, Alan Horn (Head of Warner Bros.) testified during the trial about the current state of the proposed film:
"We had hopes to keep the [Superman] character alive and to once again reinvent Superman. We are — our hope is to develop a Superman property and to try again. What hurt us is that the reviews and so on for the Superman movie . . . did not get the kind of critical acclaim that Batman got, and we have other issues with Superman that concern us.” 1
Given the state of the film that Horn described, 2012 is soonest possible time the film could be released. (Not taking into account casting drama, script issues, and overall bad luck during production.)
It seems that Superman really is up in the air (no pun intended -- well, maybe.) The initial hype earlier this year, was that the new film (reportedly titled Superman Unleashed) would indeed be a sequel that promised much more action. There were hints scattered around since then, that Brandon Routh (star of 2006's critically brutalized Superman Returns) was NOT completely out of the picture, despite the "failure" of the reboot in which he starred. With the recent revelation that Routh's contract has expired, we're not even sure about what we once thought we knew.
Personally, I blame the blandness of Superman Returns on the script itself. As the Man of Steel, Routh was actually pretty decent (perhaps we'll go with "passable"), and I think that given the right environment, he could really come into his own. Considering that "The Law" has now put significant pressure on Warner to churn this sequel out in the next three years, there is not enough time to start from the beginning. If you want to know what kind of a disaster can occur from rebooting too soon, I give you three words: Punisher War Zone. Give it another go with Routh, dammit! Get a decent script, packed with the action you promised, get Brainiac as the villain, and salvage this franchise, already!

I thought Brandon Roth did an excellent job retroing the old school Superman movies with Christopher Reeves and I thought the story line in SR was ok... just ok though. If the new Superman movies in the future have any chance in competing with The Dark Knight or any of the new age DC Comic movies they will have to make the movies a little darker and with better villains! Hats off to Brandon but my pic for Superman is Tom Welling. The only thing is can Tom shake the small screen Smallville drama and move up to the big screen Metropolis? As for the villains, you cant start off with a mega villains like Dooms Day or Zod, you got to start with either Lex and his power suit or something like Metallo. It would be nice to see the the begining of the Justice league starting to take shape but that's a whole different discussion. For now lets just get the Superman movies back in the air where they need to be.

I'm a fan of the Christopher Reeves superman movies, they are what made me like superman in the first place, it's what made me like superman returns as my favorite version of 'superman'. For any body reading my comment, I would like to read your responce to it (I won't get affended), would anyone like to see the superman returns sequel to have the villain darkseid in the movie? Darkseid was in a comic book that had superman in it

"critically brutalized"??
No. The movie got excellent reviews from critics for the most part.
Just did a quick Rotten Tomatoes and metacritic search. Yup. Still.

i hope the next movie has much more scifi element. bring in lex with his power suit, doomsday, brianiac, or something to make it more interesting. superman returns was pretty boring.

I'm so tired of hiring about this crap, they need to get they act together. i love superman, and all of this is making me mad. i don't want to hire nothing about this in tell they start shooting the film.

Looks like someone is reading The Journ-El or at least borrowed the idea or the picture from the Fan Fiction at The Planet.
Brandon Routh was the best thing about SR. I really liked the movie, and how realistic it was. There was an actual story unlike some of the stuff we are getting this summer. Granted it could have been better if they didn't try to pay so much homage to the past. The whole Lex Luthor Real Estate thing is just stupid, was then is now. I hope WB gets their act together and gives us another movie with Brandon in the Suit.

I agree with Proud Filipino and Osalot_3, why don't they have him fight Doomsday and actually have him die like they did back in the 1990's. They can re-boot the franchise afterwards or continue the story line from Death of Superman.

I thought everyone knew you dont screw with Batman.
This just in: Don't screw with Batman.

Why does everyone knock Punisher. I thought that movie was pretty damn close to what the comics portray him now and what he used to mean a while ago. The action was incredible and the gore was really good too. As for Superman, I'd have to go with Mr_Eko_73, Superman is not dark he's moral and ethical but confused and lonely. He needs to be portrayed more like a superhero against a super villain than just an above average human with lots of feelings and superpowers. Let's see a superman/doomsday movie in live action.
ProudFilipino
Put a Doomsday in the film! and make the fight scenes last longer then usual! problem solved

Superman just isn't a "dark" Character. I know some of the comics, at times, had him has a darker brooding hero but, I'm not sure that will resonate with the movie going public. Personaly, I would like to see a more complex Superman and at times Smallville (believe it or not) as had some interesting ideas for a hero on the brink. The fact the he will out live everyone he has ever cared about and the fact that we, as human beings, keep going to war and killing each other depite Kal El's best efforts should be a nice starting point.

maybe supes will fight a villian this time O.o

Also, can we get the character to put his underwear BENEATH his clothing? Would it be too much to ask if we could just get Superman to put on a pair of pants?

I agree, the script was the issue with the last movie. We live in a different world now. The things that were "shocking" back in the 30's when superman came out, or even the 80's when the first movie was made, are not shocking now. Simple maniacal laughter doesn't cut the mustard anymore. They have to get nasty and gritty. That's why the new Batman movies have succeeded, they stopped being vaginas.

Superman didn't get as good of reviews? Maybe that's because the movie sucked!
