BioWare Explains George Lucas's Involvement In Star Wars: The Old Republic

The visionary behind Star Wars, George Lucas, is still very much involved in every aspect of his baby, including the video games. When Billy sat down with BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka recently, he asked whether Lucas has seen BioWare's work on their upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

"I haven't shown it to him [Lucas] personally, no," said Muzyuka, but I know he keeps his finger on the pulse of everything that LucasArts is working on, so I know he's involved in it. I've talked to him about the project in the past and I know he's excited about it."

The E3 trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic has Star Wars fans dancing hand-in-hand, but whether it generated the same reaction out of Lucas, it's hard to say.

"I can't say what he thought of the trailer because I don't know for sure that he's seen it," said Muzyka, "but I imagine he has because he's very involved in the development side of things."

I wonder if Lucas plays World of Warcraft.

ok,look this IS his baby, and indeed he should have his say in it,but should yeld in some matters to those who make games. After all that is there job.The story line and how it plays out is his,but the tech side should be left to those who know that feild.Knights look to great, btu my one question is WHEN THE HECK IS STAR WARS BATTLE FRONT 3 COMING,i am so ready for it.i am a big fan and Clan leader in that old game....Yes i know it's old and where i have a nex gen system(PS3) i still play it....

Lucas can and should definitely have final say on any major plot points or stories, but as far as scripting the details, he should definitely leave that to others. Jar Jar was all about technical hubris. Jar Jar from a technical stand point was brilliant, but it was the actual character, either real or CGI was horrible and we shouldn't confuse the two.

I think Old Republic will be up to both the GL of old and Bioware's standards of storytelling and gameplay, while also being technically amazing. I'm excited for it!

I can imagine Kayne West delivering ShotgunOcelot's line: "GEORGE LUCAS HATES STAR WARS FANS."

That aside, a lot of people seem to forget that Lucas was forward-thinking enough to maintain a great deal of control over his properties; initially by retaining merchandising rights on "Star Wars" and later by developing his own company and financing his films personally while still distributing through other companies.

So, long story short, he EARNED the right to not only have final say on his works, but also make as much money as he wants. It's called good business sense.

The prequel trilogy didn't live up to its pedigree, but it wasn't a complete failure. Take out Gungans and replace Jake Lloyd with a good actor and even Episode 1 could have been a decent film, in my opinion.

Lucas still has an amazing imagination. I think his real issue is that he is taken too seriously now after his successes, so actors and studios really do not have a leg to stand on if he wants to do something a different way than they do. Even Episodes 1, 2 and Indiana Jones 4 were commercial successes despite being terrible movies (to me 3 was just sub-par, not terrible. Maybe it was the bit where Hayden Christensen caught on fire ^.^) because of this, he is given the budget for extraneous, crappy things like Jar-Jar and whatever the heck those things in the fields of Naboo were. The best Star Wars movie was one directed by someone else, The Empire Strikes Back.

Totally agreed. Lucas is no longer fit to be in charge of Star Wars. In fact, he should pretty much never do anything but supply money at this point. The man has single handedly almost ruined the entire franchise which is odd since he built it himself. Someone get the man a yo-yo or something so he's too distracted to stick his fingers in this pie and spoil the whole thing.

Please keep Lucas as far away from this project as possible. Between KOTOR and the TOR Trailer, Bioware has already proven they are more competent than Lucas at making a better Star Wars experience (at least in the last 20 years).

One of the areas I'm sure Lucas will have a hand in will be the story, especially if it is going to be considered canon as Force Unleashed was. Even with the Star Wars books Lucas has certain guidelines for anyone who writes a Star Wars story has to follow. Like when he told the authors of the New Jedi Order that no matter what Luke, Han, Leia and the droids could never be killed off...so instead they killed off Chewie :(
