Sir Howard Stringer, Sony's CEO, is an actual knight, and he ended his jousting tournament early recently to talk to Reuters about Activision head (and commoner) Bobby Kotick's call for a price cut for the PlayStation 3.
As you may know, Kotick has lately become very serious about Sony cutting the price of the PlayStation 3, going as far as saying Activision might drop the console altogether if the price isn't cut. "If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony," Kotick said. "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP too.”
Stringer responded by basically calling Kotick a loudmouth: "He likes to make a lot of noise... He's putting pressure on me and I'm putting pressure on him. That's the nature of business." Oh, snap!
Stringer went on to explain that his company is not going to cut the price of the console because it would lose money on each unit sold if it did.
Reuters went on to inquire about rumors that Sony was thinking of selling off some assets. That, too, is not true, according to Stringer. "We're learning to fuse content and hardware. This wouldn't be a time to get rid of either," he said.
This back-and-forth between Kotick and Stringer is unlikely to end in an exciting duel to the death, but it does raise some interesting questions, which I will answer for you because I am a great genius.
- Is Kotick going to make good on his company's threat to not develop games for the PlayStation 3? I seriously doubt it, but if it did, the fallout would be enormous and might add up to a death knell for Sony's gaming machines.
- Is Sony going to eventually cave on ceaseless demands to lower the price of its flagship game system? Sure doesn't look like it in the near term, but in the long-term, of course.
- Is Sony going to succeed in fusing content and hardware? Partially, but they'll really need to overhaul the PlayStation Network and the PS3's firmware to accomplish this.
- How funny is all this back and forth to Nintendo, who have discovered the age-old secret to earning endless amounts of money? Very, very funny.

1/3 of their profits? yeah right. More people have Xbox 360s and Wiis. Its not nearly 1/3 of their profits.

it would be so awesome if sony obtained infinity ward.
it would be even more awesome to not have activisions crappy game lineup pollute the sony game catalog.
MrAdaptability
Even if Sony did cut the price, the only way I'd ever buy a PS3 is if Square Enix said "KH3 soon, ps3 only."
oh and @MahBoiTaarec10
Now that Activision is now Activision-Blizzard, I dont think they have any financial problems anymore............

god i'm so sick of hearing about price cuts on the PS3, i think it's a good deal now, there are phones that are more expensive, hell i paid 600 for the first iphone without even thinking twice about it. If you want premium games on a premium system spend premium bucks.
If you want a premium price for decent games than pick up a wii or some portable device.
Also, if you can't afford the PS3 the Xbox is an excellent solution, I prefer it for most 3rd party games so all you are really missing out on is a few exclusives and bluray support. (let's face it, if you're whining about the price of the console i doubt you're laying down $30 on movies either)

Don't worry Sony will drop there price on the ps3 10 year from now when ps4 comes out! Happy now?
snookgum123
Yeah I wonder what activision will say about that remark!! I highly doubt that Activision will drop it's support. Activision probably sending Sony some flowers to mend the relationship O.O

If activision abandons the PS3 sony might pull the PSP and PS2 from activision leaving a larger hole in activision's wallet then in sony's Activision needs sony more than sony needs actavision US game developers beat the PS3 down but the strongest titles for the PS3 all came from over seas exception of a few but Gran turismo Killzone LBP and soon to be out Demon Souls all came from other countries

Your move Activision...

The PS3 has a price cut of sorts. The Bestbuy bundle mentioned yesterday essentailly has the PS3 at roughly $300 and the two games at thier appropriate prices; and if you get a PS3 those Killzone 2 and Metal Gear are two of the must haves, so it does force you into the $400 price tag, but its well worth it.

CUT THE PRICE ALREADY SONY. SURE YOU MIGHT LOSE MONEY FOR A WHILE, BUT THERE WILL BE HIGHER SOFTWARE SALES AND MORE PEOPLE WITH YOUR CONSOLE AND BLU RAY! MIROSOFT LOST MONEY ON THE XBOX &360 BUT NOW THEY MAKE MONEY, AND ALSO IF PEOPLE BUY OTHER CONSOLES THEY WILL BE MORE INCLINED TO FORGET ABOUT THE PLAYSTATION BRAND ALTOGETHER! PLEASE DROP THE PRICE SONY HELP GAMERS AND BLU-RAY FANS!
Fyzban
Why sony would want to cut the price when a normal blue ray player cost around 300$, for another 100$ you got a ps3. Like most people I know they buy for that reason , why buying a normal blue ray player when you can get a ps3for a bit more money. Ps3 is third in sale and would be lower without his blue ray.At least 30% of ps3 owners bought it for the blue ray.

@Zmeeds no, my statement is based of the games that i have played on PS3 (killzone 1&2, LBP, MGS4, etc) most of the other games i found unenjoyable. I try my best to stay unbiased when it comes to consoles. ( i plan to buy a ps3 of my own(if they would just lower the price, or if the remade ff7))
Vesipham
Well, I have another solution for all you Xbox owners wanting a PS3. Save up the money you use to buy 360 games, so that you can eventually buy a PS3. Not so hard, am I right?
ADAMBOLIAN
WHAT IS WRONG WITH SONY? CUT THE PRICE. MICROSOFT LOST MONEY ON XBOX & 360S BUT NOW THEY MAKE MONEY! MORE CONSOLES SOLD=MORE SOFTWARE SALES. TAKE THE HIT NOW SO PEOPLE DON'T BUY OTHER SYSTEMS AND GET USED TO THEM AND FORGET ABOUT PLAYSTAION. PLUS IT WILL HELP BLU-RAY PRICING FOR ALL CONSUMERS! SERIOUSLY, PLEASE DROP THE PRICE ALREADY!

Xbox first they complain about not enough games, than they complain about the price being too high. Why does it matter go back and play for broken xbox360 that you guys said is far more superior and have lots of games on it!
Now why would PS3 owner complain about a price drop we can care less about that because we have one already? Beside that my ps3 is going to last for 10 years not 1 year or less? And I know if it does break down it would be time for an upgrade to a ps4? Your logic thinking fail you. I dont need to be jealous that I bought it for 600. And I'm glad that for all the ps3 user that was able to pay 400 and got themself one.
Blue_Vortex
I think Ps3 fanboys are just sore that they might lose activation. You all need to realize that it does cost a lot more to develop on the ps3 then it does on any other system, and that games end up selling better on the 360 then the ps3.
ImpurestCrowd
WOW it's funny all the Xbots and kids that come on here thinking they know more then the president of a billion dollar company does about the industry.
SlickyFats
It would be retarded of the to announce a coming price drop, all sales would cease.
As far as everyone saying it needs a price drop, it doesn't but it wouldn't be a bad thing if it did. I love my PS3 i paid $600 the day it came out. I wasn't spiteful when the price dropped the first time and I won't be if it does again. I feel ripped off by my 360. I have 42 disc based games + 20 downloaded games on my PS3. I have my 360 longer and only have 22 games for it and no room to download any on the measly 20Gb hard drive. An Xbox may be cheaper but they get you on all of the proprietary stuff. The hard drive is the biggest offender. They quadruple the price of a standard hard drive. Its $150 for 120Gb I put a 320Gb in my PS3 for $89 (paid extra for 7200 RPM) there are several 500Gb for $90.
The PS3 is worth every penny. Heck it can double as a stand alone PC just by using one of the built-in options.
Also the PS3 fail rate compared to MS justifies the current price and higher.
