Square Enix Dropping Eidos Name For Publishing

Lara Croft going from Eidos to Square Enix in May 2009

The next time you boot up a Tomb Raider video game, it won't have the Eidos Interactive name attached to it. Eidos lives on as part of Square Enix, but as part of the formation of Square Enix Europe, the Eidos name is being dropped for publishing purposes, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

Additionally, the formation of Square Enix Europe will result in a few job losses, the company has revealed. "We are hoping to minimise this wherever possible and offer support and advice to any employees directly affected," said a statement.

That's going to be a weird one. Core Design is no longer part of Tomb Raider and neither is Eidos Interactive -- at least in name. It's not as strange as booting up a Sonic the Hedgehog game on the Nintendo machine for the first time, but it's still going to be strange, don't you think?

Mmm, I'll try and make things a bit clearer; the Eidos brand remains, it will be the logo on the packs or at the start of Eidos games developed by Eidos studios. So Hitman, Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, etc will continue to be Eidos games.

The games themselves will then be published by the newly created Square Enix Europe (name still tbc) company.

@ProjectBlackBriar - No, the ugly box art as you put it stays the same :)

What about North America? Will it still have the Eidos logo or did they drop that?

Considering how disappointed I was with the last Tomb Raider game, I welcome the change. I don't even remember what the Eidos logo looked like.

It's not surprising at all. Square mentioned that this was all part of quickly gaining a wider appeal for it's games by acquiring a company experienced with a different style from Square. Leaving the Eidos name attached wouldn't help establish this strategy since people would see them as being separate. At least I know not to be surprised if Batman: AA says Square Enix on it.
