Ubisoft Announces Plans To Open New Studio In Toronto

UbisoftCorrect me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure that for every four game studios a company opens in Canada, it gets a fifth one for free. I could be thinking of car washes at this place down the street, but I don’t think so. Well, if ever there was a publisher that would know for sure it would be Ubisoft.

The company announced today that it will be opening a new studio in Toronto later this year, making it the fourth Ubisoft studio in Canada (the others being located in Montreal, Quebec City and Vancouver). Ubisoft says the Toronto studio will create 800 jobs, bringing the total Ubisoft staff count in Canada to over 2,300. Ubisoft plans to invest close to $500 million in the studio over the next 10 years, while the government of Ontario will be tossing in around $226 million.

Ubisoft also announced that Yannis Mallat, the CEO of the company’s Montreal studio (the team behind Assassin’s Creed 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction) will head up the new studio. And while Ubisoft has, and will continue to have, a deep connection with the film industry and other mediums, the Toronto studio looks as though it will be pushing that relationship even further.

"Toronto's unique pool of experienced video game and film industry talent will allow us to develop a team with exceptional ability to help us realize our goals for creating brands with universal appeal that extend beyond the world of video games,” said Mallat via press release.
It’s obviously far too early to tell what the new brands might be, or how they will fit in with the rest of Ubisoft's games library,  but I’m waiting to hear back from Ubisoft about what its preliminary plans are for the Toronto studio in terms of creating new IPs vs. expanding upon existing ones. So stay tuned.
