During this year’s E3, EA announced EA Sports MMA, a new mixed-martial arts fighting franchise EA hopes will be a major contender against THQ’s UFC series. And while the tension is sure to ramp up once MMA gets closer to release, there seems to already be some preliminary rumbling going on behind the scenes.
Evil Avatar reports that the confirmed word on the street is that any non-UFC-affiliated fighter who signs on to appear in EA’s MMA will “forever be banned for fighting in the UFC.”
Given the critical and financial success of THQ’s recent UFC 2009: Undisputed, it’s hardly surprising that the UFC would want to ensure it maintains first right of refusal with regards to unsigned talent. Plus, UFC is the dominant force for mixed-martial arts, so if prospective fighters want the most exposure, there’s really only one place they can go. And I find it hard to believe that any young fighter would want to jeopardize his entire future just to appear in an EA-published mma game when he could simply appear in THQ’s game and fight on mma’s biggest stage.
When I contacted EA to find out its take on these reports (which could end up being quite an interesting battle if the UFC stands behind this policy), an EA representative simply said, “We have no comment regarding the alleged UFC threats to fighters as it pertains to EA Sports MMA.”
This response was to be expected, especially for as fresh as these allegations are, and for as potentially damaging this situation could be for EA’s new franchise. Expect to see plenty more about this whole mess in the near future.

EA should release a special edition or a Legends of MMA game featuring the past greats of MMA those who don't appear in THQ Undisputed fighter. A game featuring the Gracies, Shamrocks and Tank Abbott would sell more discs. Those legends mentioned were true warriors of the then new sport who all fought without rules and weak ass weight classes. Also the past fighters are no longer contracted to adhere to the gestapo esque policies held by the UFC.

its funny how many of you idiots dont understand what a rumor is and are taking this as fact.

You guys are idiots. EA's monopoly of the NFL license hurts gamers but not the actual athletes, it doesn't cross over and affect the actual sport. Dana White threatening to ban fighters however does. If EA are bullies of the video game industry, then Dana White is the bully of the MMA world.
Seriously, talk about hypocritical, bashing EA over their control of the NFL license while simultaneously endorsing the UFC's attempt to monopolize fighters.

i heard dana white was ruthless but damn..lol i guess mma fighters from the defunct elite fc will be in ea sports mma

EA gets a taste of its own medicine...some what.

Good job Dana finally someone feeds EA a taste of there own medicine... Yes it sucks for the gamers but you know what Karma is a... well you know. This is what EA gets for locking up all the franchises they have over the last 10 years (e.g. the NFL). Glad to see someone standing up to the giant.

Screw the UFC, it's gone so commercial that they can't stand anyone affiliated with them making money without getting a cut. To hell with the UFC and to hell with dana white. If I were a fighter in the UFC and EA asked me I'd be like "LAAAAATER!! SNEEZ YA ON THE FLIP SIDE UFC"

EA may have a monopoly on the NFL, but at least the NFL isn't banning players from other leagues for appearing in a competing game. If this is true it seems like a crappy thing to do.

Who cares about ufc anymore? Ufc is watered down from its great beginings. 45+minute matches, now its what 4 3 minutes rounds? BORING!! thrying to get acepted by mainstream media has destroyed what was good about UFC.

After playing Fight Night Round 4 in every spare moment I get, I'd have to say that EA will make a better MMA game. Also, I feel that EA will be able to find a niche group that will buy the game but are not necessarily MMA enthusiasts just as I assume most of Fight Night's buyers were. Who follows boxing anymore?
torres0068
please ea leave the mma alone dont want to play a fight night four disguise as a mma game.

Money is power. This is business and they want to protect their money.

funny to watch the trolls squabble over rumors that haven't been confirmed...
I dont think its a good move (if its true) on UFC's part, but on the other hand, I haven't bought an EA sports game other than fight night in years anyways, because they're so repetitive anyways. Do they even need an MMA game?
