Has MySpace Become An Electronic Ghetto?

MySpace logoHas MySpace become an electronic ghetto? That's the contention of social analyst Danah Boyd. Boyd, speaking at New York's Democracy Forum, said, "It wasn't just anyone who left MySpace to go to Facebook...We might as well face an uncomfortable reality ... what happened was modern day 'white flight'."

According to Boyd, the people left of MySpace are "more likely to be brown or black and to have a set of values that terrifies white society."

Boyd surveyed young users of social networks and found that people on Facebook look down on people on MySpace, and view MySpace as less refined and less cultured than Facebook. "Any high school student who has a Facebook page will tell you MySpace users are more likely to be barely educated and obnoxious," she said.

Craig (17, California) was quote by Boyd thusly:

The higher castes of high school moved to Facebook. It was more cultured, and less cheesy. The lower class usually were content to stick to MySpace. Any high school student who has a Facebook will tell you that MySpace users are more likely to be barely educated and obnoxious. Like Peet’s is more cultured than Starbucks, and Jazz is more cultured than bubblegum pop, and like Macs are more cultured than PC’s, Facebook is of a cooler caliber than MySpace.

Personally, I switched from MySpace to Facebook for a couple reasons, and they weren't class or race based. I switched to Facebook because MySpace started loading slower, and also because MySpace's policy of allowing people to alter their pages dramatically resulted in un-navigable sites that took way too long to load, automatically queued up music I didn't want to hear and generally broke every rule of aesthetics and graphic design imaginable. But, yeah, it is true that Facebook seems more genteel, more sophisticated and less idiotic than MySpace.

I think Boyd's analogy between real "white flight" and the switch from one network to another to be interesting, but doesn't hold up under close scrutiny. One of the main reasons middle-class flight from the inner-city was so problematic was because of the people who were left behind by an unwillingness or inability to take flight themselves. But online, anyone can abandon their social network and start up in another one with little sacrifice. So the online class system is much more fluid than the real life class system.

Also, moving to the suburbs may have been the ultimate dream of past generations of white people, but now everyone is moving back into the cities because, lets face it, suburbs really suck. I really don't think a similar return will happen to MySpace.

What do you think? Do you think people on MySpace and people on Facebook are of different classes? What about users of Beebo, Friendster and other social networking site?

I would like to see and hear the two cowards say this stuff in public and not just on an online blog. I can't stand it when people divide something; i.e. neighborhoods, racial crime stereo typing or in this case social networking sites via race. By saying anything that is used by what sounds like or are by multiple races then narrow it down to one to a specific race she hates then call it Ghetto. I would insult Facebook but then I would be low than those who put themselves on a pedestal for blogging on "cultured" social networking site.

so yes we all know in this modern day and age, everyone is equal and have rights and what not... but still when we see a white dude, with baggy ass pants, a phat farm shirt, rapping or talking ghetto we make fun and call him wigga or whatever am i right? okay... well i do think myspace is full of obnoxious ghetto kids who use pimpmyprofile.com to customize their page and the fact that this article mentions the whole black/brown race is some what unnecessary.. unnecessary to the point where it almost "offends" people. Although it's all true, they coulda done their facebook/myspace research and wrote this article without mentioning race at all. "Ghetto" is pretty much self explanatory:obnoxious, less educated, not professional. Yes, some people still have myspace only for the reason of communicating with their friends who have yet to convert to facebook, but the majority of myspace users ARE those obnoxious, ghetto, highschool kids.

Hmm. I still find it hilarious that any male would use any of these sites. Just a bunch of gossipy nonsense and useless information about unimportant people. And since when are Macs more refined than PCs? More pretentious sure, but to imply that in any way they are better because they are mostly used by guys who like turtlenecks, scarves, and big rimmed glasses is just foolish.

Guys, seriously. Forget the somewhat racist ideologies and think about it. This ACTUALLY happened. Seriously. When Facebook came into the scene and people switched over, that was what it was like. And people still talk about it in the same context.

Also: A ghetto is described as a "portion of a city in which members of a minority group live; especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure." It has nothing to do with being racist. People escaped to Facebook for their various reasons. Some stayed. The fact that the group of people that stay there are mainly black happens to be quite the cherry on the top for this concept, because we are the current group of people stereotyped to live in them.

Don't let the concept of racism blind you here. Because this movement is actually quite real. I would know because I was one of the people that did move for somewhat similar reasons. It's like being "The Black Guy getting out of the Hood."

How reliable can this research data possibly be?
It smells to like wanton misinterpretation of research data - or at the very least, sensationalism.
At least two facts, however, are blatant.

One: Facebook started by billing itself as a social network for collegiate youth.
Two: Affluence is a portent of education.

Perhaps, just perhaps, this information points to a socioeconomic microcosm.

I expected more from a social analyst. This petty interjection of race is puerile. You should know better.

Anyway, I'm going to go smoke a hard CAWK. Ef U Guiz.

First off, referring to any place of residence, real or virtual, as a "ghetto" simply because people of color live there is racist. Ever been to Baldwin Hills, it's an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles County that is primarily black. Secondly, to assert the notion that people on Facebook are generally more "cultured" or "smarter," while in the same breath insinuating that it is because they're white is equally offensive and racist. I don't know who this Danah Boyd is or the person she interviewed, but perhaps they should think before they speak.

This is one of the dumbest things I have heard in a long time. Whether it was because of crime or racism or whatever, the people who left the inner cities did it because they could afford to do it. Those who stayed did so because they couldn't afford to leave. Since that left all the poor people in one place, BAM, you had the ghetto. Since MySpace and Facebook are both free, there's nothing stopping anyone from moving from one to the other. If there's any reason for Facebookies to look down on MySpacers it's because their pages look better.. but that's only the case because Facebook (thankfully) won't let you make your page look but so god-awful.

That is pure retardation, yet I can't deny that both sides play their part. I use MySpace for music because it is still leagues beyond Facebook in that regard. Facebook is purely for personal nonsense.

Still on MySpace. Why? Because I spent time making my profile look nice and 'non-ghetto' and I'm too lazy to start over somewhere else. I won't do Facebook simply because it's another 'me too' platform...something else will come along and usurp Facebook....count on it.

im with Warheart1188. My first site was Facebook, but I stopped caring when they let everyone on. It used to be a great way to keep in touch with my old college friends. Now its no different than myspace. And I hate the new format and page layout.

Any network can be abused. Facebook and twitter are full of a bunch of people who feel compelled to tell me what they are eating for lunch as if i care, and myspace allows so much freedom in its layout that people abuse it with embedding everything imaginable.

The main problem on all sites is that people fail to keep things simple and fail to realize they are not as important as they think. But when people do use them conservatively none of them are half bad.

That damn higher class of people, always inundating my page with stupid quizzes. I block one and three take its place. I can GreaseMonkey away any stupid bulletin (posters) on MySpace - there's something to be said for its accessible code over the holier-than-thou Facebook.
