A sneaky Internet sleuth has discovered that Blizzard Entertainment has recently filed for trademarks under the name "Cataclysm" in the computer games, paper-based products, and online entertainment services. Is this an all-new game, a World of WarCraft expansion, or something else entirely?
All signs point to a new World of WarCraft expansion. WoW.com noticed that the domain name "wowcataclysm.com" has just expired from a squatter based in Australia with the URL transferring over to GoDaddy, the same service that handles all of Blizzard's domain names.
Furthermore, the filing for "paper-based products" most likely means a matching expansion to the World of WarCraft Trading Card Game is in the works. Either way, expect to hear more at this year's BlizzCon.

Well Ive only been playing wow for the last year and a half now so Im still quite into it, but regardless Ill be at this years blizconn so I can't wait to see what this is about.

Screw that! Barking Dog Studios used that word first in the second title of the Homeworld series, Homeworld: Cataclysm.

Maybe it'll be a new WoW expansion where some disaster like a meteor or TaurenGodzilla strikes on Azeroth and destroys everything. I'm sure Blizzard is tired all these people complaining about "balance issues" and Paladins needing nerfing, so they're gonna say "NERF THIS!" and blow the whole planet up, then all characters will float in space until they die, then you can claim your body as a spirit only to die again. Best. Gameplay. Ever.

Patents and trademarks aren't the same thing. The link says that Blizzard filed trademarks for "Cataclysm" not patents. Meaning they file for the protection to use the word Cataclysm in whatever business purposes they have. A patent would be for something they may have invented (well a utility patent anyway), like maybe something that could cause a cataclysm, like a death ray maybe.

Yea, sounds like a WoW expansion. But I dumped the game recently too, after 4 1/2 years I'm finally up for air.

Sounds like Diablo expansion... Diablo Cataclysm? Maybe its just wishful thinking that the are already devolving an expansion for a game not out yet...
