It wouldn’t be a weekday without a PlayStation 3 Slim rumor, so let’s get on with it.
According to Engadget, the latest reports indicate that hardware manufacturers Foxconn and Pegatron are building PS3 Slims, and are planning to ship the long rumored console in July. Considering analysts have pointed to August for a PS3 price cut, and the PS3 Slim is expected to be released sometime around the time of said price cut, a July/August release window seems reasonable enough.
The other rumor to emerge from all of this is that Sony plans to make the PS3 Slim the last console model of this generation. If that sounds like crazy talk, that's because it most likely is. Sony won’t be rolling out its motion-control technology until sometime next year, and if Microsoft is planning to release a revamped Xbox 360 with built in Project Natal support, you better believe Sony has something similar planned for their motion tech as well. Of course, that purely theoretical console might be a PS3 Slim with built-in motion support, but that would still qualify as a new console model. In short, this rumor doesn't sound right at all, so I'm just going to move along now.
I contacted Sony about all of this, and I'm currently waiting to hear back.
