Sony’s PlayStation 3 and the issue of backwards compatibility have a long and storied history, despite the fact that the console has only been around for a few years. Between the Emotion Engine chip (the PS2’s CPU) initially being available in some SKUs, to the Emotion Engine chip being pulled from later SKUs, to some models including emulators, it’s just a big mess. Basically, the major point to take away from all this is that currently, Sony is not producing any PS3s with backwards compatibility support (via hardware or software). However, that could be changing sometime soon.
As SilconEra reports, Sony recently filed a patent that would allow the PS3’s Cell processor to emulate the Emotion Engine. If successful, this process would add backwards compatibility to every PS3 on store shelves and in homes. In addition to most likely being built into the rumored PS3 Slim expected to be out sometime later this year, this feature could also be made available via firmware update for all current PS3 owners.
It would be impressive if Sony could pull this off, even though this whole Cell-powered backward compatibility function should have been part of the PS3 from the beginning. But I’m guessing that most PlayStation fans will see it as a “better late than never” scenario, and they’re probably right.

@Joshua360
real gamers will always play OUTdated games that have lost their entertainment value, I still play my old snes and is VERY outdated, let say... 15+ years. by the way... even a snes has better games than this gen, and that includes EVERY CONSOLE (I have every nintendo portable and home console and looking forward to get a backward compatible ps3 *W*)

Who the hell care about backward comparability in this day and age. Don't you people still have your ps2 anyway or did you scap them when you bought the ps3? And are you people actually considering purchasing a new ps3 just to be able to play out dated and tired ps3 games that have lost their entertainment value? If you are you stupid. That's all I have to say.

Hah, I have a 80gb and I can play PS2 games (not that I own any..) I hated how my friends kept going oh you don't have a PS2 you can't play PS2 games and then I would yell at them and blow their brains out in anger telling them that I was better than them and that my PS3 could play PS2 games. eventually my Xbox 360 fanboy friend's Xbox 360 got the E74 error and he just gave up got a PS3 and left the other system in the dusts. "It takes a broken Xbox to make someone a PS3 fanboy."

I want SACD back on my PS3! but alas, my cries fall upon deaf ears

They need to hurry the hell up with this. I want to be able to play my God of War games, as well as FF13

I was guessing they took it off to milk the PS2 when the PS3 wasn't selling ready, so I expected that the week PS2 production ends they would announce it. However, I wouldn't mind it early.

LOLZ, I got an 80gb PS3 that still featured backwards compatibility, and its about time that they fixed this problem.

by whose standards? Microsoft is a greedy company that takes advantage of its customers. XBL is over rated, and sure you could have XBL silver, but it is practically nothing. They squeeze you for every penny you have.

OH GOODNESS YES! please let sony give me a reason to sell this PS2 for a BC PS3! PLEASE! IM READY!

Backwards compatibility for my PS3 isn't much of a problem as I still have a working order PS2. It would be nice to have upscaling but it really doesn't bother me that much. I welcome it but if I have to pay for it I'll be very reluctant.

I dont understand, I have been playing PS2 games on my PS3 for years. I just went and threw one in just to make sure im not mistaken. Gran Turismo 4 is running in the other room right now on my PS3 perfectly.

well it is about time they did something about backwards compatabilty. if i had sold my old ps2 not knowing that i can't play ps2 games (I have a lot of them) i would have been scrwed.
