THQ's Experimenting With Natal, Doesn't Have Sony Kits Yet, Making A Peripheral Game

There's a lot for third parties to be thinking about right now. It's taken a few years for companies to wrap their head around the Wii but in the next year, we'll see most likely see a rollout of three new takes on motion: MotionPlus, Project Natal and Sony's wands. And that's to say nothing of the explosion in peripheral-based games like Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Wii Fit. THQ wants to take advantage of all of them, but to find out how, I spoke with THQ CEO Brian Farrell over the phone yesterday.

Microsoft wasn't lying when it said Project Natal kits were rolling out to its development partners. Farrell told me his company's been experimenting with the technology for a little while now.

"Oh yeah, we've had kits for some time," he said.

"I don't know how long [we've had them] -- 4 , 6 weeks, however long they've been available," he continued. "I'm not at liberty to talk about exactly what we're doing, but kind of like when we first got the Wii kits, some key development people are going 'okay, what can we do that's really cool here?' So, stay tuned."

There were a variety of Project Natal demos shown at E3, some ranging from casual (i.e. painting, smacking balls) to twists on hardcore favorites (Burnout Paradise). Farrell isn't sure where his company's strategy lies with Project Natal just yet. Project Natal is a different beast than Wii -- is it core or casual?

"It's maybe a mix and...it's just too early," said Farrell. "We're obviously looking at both. Our initial take is that it does seem to be more broad, the idea that you're getting new gamers or lapsed gamers away from very complex controls, but I don't want to rule out doing something for core because we've got some ideas along that line. But I think the emphasis there and I think the positioning from Microsoft -- [maybe it's a] better question for them -- but it feels more casual to us at this point."

What hasn't arrived in THQ's mailbox yet, however, are development kits for the motion technology Sony was showing at E3. Farrell said THQ has only "had discussions" with Sony about the rollout plans, and "don't have any of the actual, hands-on dev kits yet."

There's more coming from the company, too, something peripheral-based. Farrell was cagey about their plans, preempting his tease by acknowledging the profound influence games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have had on the market the last few years.

"What we know is input devices matter now, whether it's new controllers, control mechanisms, things like Guitar Hero and Rock Band," he said. "We have a very interesting peripheral idea we'll be rolling out later, so I'm not prepared to talk about it now. Good input devices have resonated with gamers, so we're going to be in those market spaces."

Any guesses on what THQ is working on?

Oh my god, i can't understand fanboys that are saying that NATAL is something new.
PS2 Eye Toy - 1999 year it is the same as Natal without Microphone
PS3 Playstation Eye - 2007 year now with microphone and voice recognition, the same as Natal
PS3 Prototype motion controller with the Playstation Toy - Not the Wii system. Wii uses separate technology, Sony's Motion controller works only by camera triggering.

And who is innovative? Offcourse!!! Xbots allways will say that Natal is something new. Sorry but you EPIC failed, it was constructed even before PS2 Eye Toy.

@crackingcody- I'm sorry, but...wow...did you just say above that 'leet and mafiagodfather have common sense and knowledge'? You're new to this site aren't you? Because anyone who's been here a while would know better.

    @ crackingcody

When my family first got our computer, with windows 98, it had a camera that came with it, and the object of one of the camera's games was to not let any balls get past you or hit the ground. Natal is nothing new, it's just something they finally found use for. Go look it up and quick pissing your life away.

You know what? this is all so stupid. Why is there controversy on this topic? Read it again fanboyz, microsoft got some dev kits in, sony hasn't.
So what? They're both going to be released, people are going to buy them, so I can hardly see the reason for people bashing either system, unless that's all you have to do in your less-than-satisfactory lives.
Honestly, go play with fire or something.

PS motion control is Sony's hopeful fix to that problem... open your eyes to the questions that make us human, not to the pictures/videos that dictate your thoughts. Thank you for your comment =)

I did not fail in an obvious point basis on camera technology. Think the question I presented with more care and you will realize what I am talking about.... or just look at a picture of a place you were presently at but not directly visible in. Tell me that I am wrong... because if you cant prove you were there, then how would I know that you are presenting the truth? That is were Sony failed on the EyeToy, and most likely where Natal is ending up at...

    @ Raverenz51
If i failed like you said.. does a joystick work like a camera?
Or are you going to say they accomplish the same task regardless of the user input? Your the fail for not recognizing the difference in user input devices. Can a joystick "like" you speak of accomplish the same task? Really try to think things through next time bru...

@ ideasNOTfacts : Argument failed. 'motion capturing' existed since the invention of the joystick when you used motion when moving the analog stick, to the capturing of it making the image on the screen move. Fail.

If you tell someone your in a picture that they are looking at and they dont see you what do they think? You yourself know that your behind this one person to the left but can't obviously prove it... Keep that in mind when you say Natal is better. That is where Sony fail with the PS3 EyeToy, and now we get to see Microsoft "follow" once again... Sony follows the light bulb expression... - I didn't fail to make the light bulb 10,000 times, I found 10,000 to not make a light bulb. - Microsoft "CANNOT" honestly say this, and even on the level of "motion capturing" neither can Nintendo... Motion capture has existed since PS2... don't forget it (regardless of your empty comments).

obviously im with l33t and mafia godfather cause they actually have common sense and knowledge. natal is a brand new thing never done before on consoles for games. the sony i toy is just a copy of the wii remote. and codered, u are comparing halo to a bunch of games that the 360 and ps3 already have as well. so stop wasting your time whining about us having games and u having games and ect......
P.S. i agree with some people here because i did not like halo 3 at all, but i would not say that any of those games that codered listed would top the best, Bioshock. by far an awesome first person shooter. cant wait for the second.
My top 3 favorite games are.....
    1. Bioshock
    2. Grand Theft Auto IV
    3. Fallout 3

Xbots here are like little ants.
first of all Natal is the same thing like Playstation Eye and it allready have games from Playstation 2 and everybody know what expect from that device.
Sony Motion controller is still Prototype and they need it not because of Wii Envy, because they can manufacture and use it with Playstation camera system. This is not the same as Wii.
Besides, Playstation Eye can use full power of the Cell processor, but Microsoft 3DV Systems is still working on the Project Natal and they are not sure about that camera.
Eye Toy was at Ps2 and it was success, not the big... But people buy it.

They give Dev Kits to those companys who can develop games and ready for that device, because they allready have Playstation Eye device.

Sony makes very good products and innovative but not very cheap, so they are releasing this controller at Spring and Natal is still TBA.

All I am trying to say is all Microsoft wont is your money and then key example for this is the new halo that is not halo and on line will be halo 3 maps and a short game and all of you fan boys will get it and say it’s great and the best game of the year and I will be on my ps3 smiling at the 360 lovers and playing creating and sharing my mod racers tracks with my friend that I know in real life. Ok the part that sony fan boys hate me is to say bad word me will bad word sony hurry up with bad word for the uk like the video store and don’t charge me bad word loads of money for less for the psp. And I must say to be truthful the wand look better then camera you have as you can chat to a kid for 3 hours and I will be playing god of war at 1080p with the bad word wand. Ok rant over and I own a ps3 and work in IT on a windows computer

I think that THQ are working on a playsation eye sorry the Microsoft copy of it whatever it is as to be truthful that is Microsoft do and yes I am talking about the whole company. And the name sound like a chocolate spared you put on bread but it is Microsoft and they only copy other things and I will give you a list if you won’t like
Avatars is the mii from Nintendo
Your operating system for the 360 is a Mac rip off and you know it
The new camera is stolen from sonys playststion eye
Your processor is partly nicked from the playstation broadband processor
You company is that lazy that you still after 4 years in November you still have the red ring of death
You can install game on to your hard disk like sonys playstation 3 could do from day one and you all took the piss out of it
And one year later the ps3 came out and all sony have done is had the bigger hard disks but Microsoft have put in a hdmi (like sony)

    @360_Mafia_Godfather

Stop beating your meat to that Picture of a 360 for second, and see it is you and feet360 that hop Sony's dick about everything. You both need help, and then got the nerve to call someone else a fanboy.
Form an unbiased opinion, then you won't be such a tool.
Do you ever get MS's dick out of your ass?We know you love them, but damn, enough is enough.
And that's cute that you and your boyfriend try to single out someone, you must be really, really...smar...dumb as sh[t.
Jealous comes in the form of going to a post about a product to claim to never want and just being a straight turd.
Have fun with your BF feet360 with your gay camaraderie, butt-fhcking each-other, and playing lags of war 2.
