For quite some time now, we've been hearing about Sony's super secret PlayStation 3 Slim console, with some reports even going so far as to suggest that gamers can expect to see the Slim sometime in the fall. Well, as Ars Technica reports, insider sources are saying that the fall timeframe seems more likely than ever, especially in light of the expected PS3 price drop coming later this year.
Rumor has it that Sony is planning to phase out the 80GB PS3 and push the 160GB model more aggressively between now and the end of the year, using a price cut (still no word on how much of a drop, but $100 doesn't seem unreasonable) to drive sales. Sony will then build on this momentum by releasing the PS3 Slim sometime in the fall, which will give the company a hardware-based buzz that should help it make a killing this holiday season, and beyond, as it rolls out its most impressive game lineup in years.
Not to be outdone, Microsoft is also expected to get into the price drop/SKU ditching game in the coming months. In addition to a price cut for the 120GB HD Xbox 360 Elite unit in early September, the 360 Pro is likely to go the way of the dodo in the next few months. Sadly, no word on that mysterious 360 with built-in Project Natal support.
Like the Sony rumors, the moves from Microsoft don't seem that unlikely, but until these reports are confirmed, don't place any bets you won't mind losing.

@codered1212
yes microsoft did get a head start but they made the 360 to soon now the ps3 has BlueRay and can do on 1 dick what the 360 can on 3 better!
codered1212
the 360's lead over the ps3 is due to the simple fact that it came out a year before, and many ppl were buying other 360's because theres were breaking down all the time
darkeldar100
mmmmhhmmmm, should had known this was going to be a bunch of fanboy talk

really i dont see the chance that a ps3 redesign could really be possible, the ps3 is a very dense console and to try to condense the console more would be very expensive.
Even the 40 gig models take up almost all the space inside of the ps3's shell.
A price drop is possible, but to slim down the console would be impractical
killzonez94
i will lmao if the ps3 price drops,then 360 price drops,and people will still say that ps3's price needs to drop.... again

@Bookshelf
like sourprophet said, they are equal, ps3 just has more...
but a gpu is more powerful than a CPU and mythbusters even proved that a while back

@Thundercracker
You're right, I have a 500gb HDD in my PS3. I call it the PS3 500. I have 378gigs of free space now.

slim ps3? they're already ready to ditch the original model after only, what 2-3 years? that didn't happen with the ps2 for a while.
sad news for sony and the ps3.

@IcemanMX you are right sony dont be like microsoft and rip us off you are better then that in fact you are sony and you lov all of use not like microsoft and nintendo that just hash bad word so put the chip in.
ihitterdal
The sooner the price drop comes, the better.

@Jaucoholic- Yes, however, Sony, Microsoft and everybody else wants the fanboy buying each version of whatever it is, because it brings in that much more money. Apple's been doing it for years with the Ipod, and they're gajillya-billionaires for it.
Jaucoholic
I think making slim versions of playstations is bs. If you're able to make a slimmer version of the console, then you should make that first, instead of a gargantuan console that your grandma probably couldn't pick up. It's like the DS's, if you're able to improve the console's size and weight, then you should wait to market, so it's the best, instead of having fanboys buying each version of the console.
SourProphit
Why do people still claim that? Even after the guys at IBM who actually DESIGNED the 2 chips admit they are pretty much equal?
(as if I have to ask why....)

@kangy3
the ps3's CPU sh%ts all over the 360's CPU.

I hate all of you console nazis

I'd like to note that though the playstation 3 has more power then the xbox 360, the 360 graphics card (Xenos GPU) is far better than the playstations (RSX)
Qouted from Hardcoreware.net
Xenos simply has more power – higher fillrate, higher pixel processing power, higher vertex processing power, and better memory architecture. If you look at multiplatform games and contrast the graphics on the two consoles, XBOX 360 almost always leads. Whether they use a higher resolution or higher quality antialiasing, games often look better and/or play smoother on the 360. We looked at a handful of multiplatform games a while back, and this was always the case.

Ok, to me a PS3 slim means new production lines, you can't just squish a regular under a press or something and market that. A new line costs money, money which PS3 is already losing. Can Sony afford to do this? Well, they've been fiscally irresponsible so far, so maybe?
My guess is, no, it's a rumor by people who love to talk like they have inside information. (then again, I was wrong about the MS and Sony motion rumors for E3)

@RROD
the PS3 once again needs to redesign itself so that it may try to get people to buy it. keep dreaming that sony is ahead.
