There’s no denying that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo (even more so now that Nintendo is getting into the movie streaming business) have forever changed the landscape of home entertainment. Their consoles deliver spectacular gaming experiences, while at the same time allowing users to access all forms of digital content like never before. And while the videogame wars continue to rage, Sony is also looking to expand upon its TV-based digital content offerings very soon.
As Gamasutra reports, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai recently told Forbes magazine that Sony plans to use the current PlayStation Network to create a brand new online service designed to simplify the process of displaying, editing, and sharing digital content via the TV. Hirai didn’t elaborate on how exactly this would work, what the new network would look like, or what devices it would support, but he did say that Sony expects to unveil the service next spring.
My money is on a Sony TV that wirelessly “talks” to other Sony devices, and lets users transfer and view digital content (and play games of course) across all platforms seamlessly. What do you think?

I'm thinking it's moving more towards Apple's model. Look for a Sony branded iPhone competitor soon. I don't see a lot of value in a TV that communicates. Seems like the PS3 has been designed as the media center. Offloading functions to other devices like the TV doesn't make much sense. Now if you could record TV by streaming it to your PS3 from a Sony TV that might be cool. Unfortunately there is less and less emphasis on empowering the home users ability to record material, while more moves are made to restrict it, so I'm dubious on any of these increased functions.

If you look at Japanese cell phone technology, they have a network specific to Japan that allows for users to watch tv, movies, pay bills, shop, etc. etc, so I'm hoping that at least for a fraction this is the direction Sony is going in...

It's possible that Sony is looking to streamline content/accessibility across their devices along the same vein as they already have in Japan...this could turn out to be very interesting and a step forward in technology, I'm excited :)

I agree with your idea. It would be like the PSP and PS3 interactions but with all Sony products.
