id Software Hopes Acquisition News Doesn't Hurt Wolfenstein

id Software being acquired by ZeniMax comes at a slightly awkward time, as Activision is gearing up for the summer release of their final collaboration with the studio, the Raven Software-developed Wolfenstein. When I interviewed id co-founder John Carmack and others this morning, Carmack expressed worry about how this news might affect Wolfenstein.

"Obviously, we hope that Wolfenstein gets a good push coming out," he Carmack, pausing, "but the reality of the situation here is that Activision is not going to be as thrilled about Wolfenstein to the maximum now as they would have been previously, but we still hope that doesn't wind up botching the release of it one way or another."

Addressing the acquisition yesterday, Activision sent a note of congratulations and mentioned the upcoming release of Wolfenstein. "We are excited to continue our partnership this summer with the launch of id Software’s Wolfenstein," the company said. "We congratulate id and wish them well on their new endeavors."

The buzz on Wolfenstein appears to be mixed. Where do you fall?

I'm so sick of WW2. i want NEW games. Meaning a new experience, not just a rehash of the same war. And the last Wolfenstein sucked balls.

    "Activision is all about sequels"
when it comes to Activision, we shouldn't even call them sequels. more like 60 dollar add-ons.

Yeah, there is practically Zero Buzz for this game. I know plenty of people who regular Gaming sites and have not even heard of this new Wolfenstein. A HUGE Marketing push is going to be needed here.

Someone else can have my copy.

The last remake of Wolfenstein didn't get my motor running.

Besides, I want to see games set in something besides WWII...

I am excited for this game. I think that traditional WWII shooters are boring, as there are so many of them. The sci/fi elements and weapons look pretty cool. But the last Nazi killing shooter that i got excited for was turning point: Fall of Liberty, and it was pretty much the most epic fail ever. How do you screw up an unreal engine III based game where Nazis invade New York. The premise sounded cool. And when i thought unreal engine, Bioshock with Nazis came to mind. I hope its a decent game, like 8.5 on metacritic, cause ill buy it for sure.

I found Return to Wolfenstein to be rather boring and don't have high hopes for this title. I may be wrong though, because I played RtW on the PC and I have never really cared for PC FPS titles outside of DooM 2, Duke Nukem, Pain Killer and other such fast paced, intense shooters. The previous Wolfenstein was just too slow and methodical for a PC FPS to me, however, that is about the flow I like on console FPS titles. I don't know why, must just prefer the controller more so I can lounge whilst playing instead of having to be hunched over the keyboard and mouse.

I'm excited for Wolfenstein. I will most definitely be picking this game up. Anyways, I think the game will have a solid release and sell fine.

Does he mean ad/release wise they could botch it ? I dont see how they could botch a game thats already made for the most part.

I needed a new id game that has plenty of mindless fun, and this may be the one I'm looking for.

@Tman88 You think ATVI will push the game just as hard even though it knows it won't be doing a sequel with id? I highly doubt that. More than any other publisher, Activision is all about sequels.

I am very excited about this release. I love games where you kill Nazis, and throwing magic and the occult in the mix makes it uniquely exciting.

Well it seems that even though id Software was acquired recently by ZeniMax, that it shouldn't affect the launch as far as Activision is concerned. Anyway I'm looking forward to the new Wolfenstein game, I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D and it was a good game and helped popularize the FPS genre.
