Another Slight PS3 Firmware Update Is Live

Sony PlayStation 3

Sony, why must you keep teasing us long-suffering PlayStation 3 owners with your firmware updates that don't do very much? The latest: Software update (v2.80). According to Sony, the tweak improves the quality of some PlayStation 3 format software. Thanks, I think.

It would be nice, though, to get a little more detail on what these updates actually do, wouldn't it? I'd love to know which software will be improved, and how it will be improved. And does this update do anything else? For that matter, is this update preparation for the next update, which will finally answer everyone's prayers and fix every single gamer's last problem with the PlayStation 3? It remains to be seen, but I'm guessing "no."

But speaking of your PS3 wish-list...what's on it? Personally, I would like the wonky media-serving to be improved. I get errors while streaming MP3s and video very often.

    Its not that the PS3 can't play music while playing games its very capable of doing so but Sony did this on purpose. Microsoft actually patented that feature so the work around is that the game itself has to give you the option as an in-game option. Not that many game developers are willing to do this yet but they are all coming around. (sorry for the spelling) Gotta love my PS3!!!

    The music feature is done on a game by game basis. Certain games (Kill Zone 2 for example) lets you play music on from your HDD anytime.

    @Puk5tar - I used TVersity for a while and it takes to much configuring to get the best settings for streaming .mkv files and other HD files. I just switched to the PS3 Media Server (yes thats what its actually called) and without doing a thing it plays everything flawlessly and gives you tons more options then TVersity did like playing actual .ISO dvd images, allows you to pick subtitles if needed from the PS3, and it plays files from within zipped files! This media server is a beast! As for the update, who cares its not that much of a problem is it? I wish they would fix the browser a little more, that thing freezes up my PS3 toooo much to be acceptable. Also I can no longer play Heavenly Sword for some unknown reason that I am blaming on updates, says needs to download update and freezes everytime...

    Why does an update "have to" bring you something new? There are some things they wanted to update and that's it.

    @DPsx7- You see a half-empty glass, I see a half-full one. I will respect your opinion.

    @Obso-leet360- Congrats on once again bringing your biased grudge where it wasn't wanted, instead of an actual thought-out opinion. Also, take care to read the second part of ccruse's comment. ccruse is wise.

    To sjohnson: not sure why you are constantly getting errors using the PS3 as a media server.
    I have TVERSITY and it works flawlessly. Albeit an earlier version of the program, maybe the newer versions have bugs, but I do not think that is the problem. Have you opened up all of your ports? Is the processor too slow to perform on the fly encoding to PS3 format?

    Two things I want Sony to do:

    1. Fix the audio glitch in Silent Hill (PS1).

    2. Add the ability to play any music off of our hard drive at any time during any game. Microsoft has had this feature since the Xbox 360's launch. Sony recently added the in-game XMB option, however you still can't play music without it exiting your game.

    Whats up with all the b!tching about a firmware update? The way the PS3 updates its very stable and only way it will crash is if you turn it off while its updating...I think as customers of such an expensive system we should love fact that Sony is willing to fix all there issues so readily.

    @Stephen Johnson
    I think last time you complained about your streaming you found this isnt a PS3 problem so maybe you should check your PC or MAC or whatever your using. Also what is this "...fix every single gamer's last problem with the PlayStation 3?" that you mention?

    @Xbots
    Come on lets keep it real both Sony and MS has been stealing each others features from day one, and both are better systems for it. You cant live in a Vacuum and act like this has been a 1 one street all this time.

    Oh, it also allows for you to speak through your PS3 headset to other players while you are on your PSP with this service effectively giving you voice chat with all of your PSP games.

    You know what feature I would love on my PS3 that is available in the form of a beta on Japan's PS3? Ad Hoc Party.

    Ad Hoc Party (for those that don't know) acts as a way point for the PSP to go online and connect to other PSPs on the same service. It essentially makes the bulk of you AD-Hoc multiplayer only games online multiplayer as well. This would let me get the most out of my Phantasy Star Portable and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite titles while still letting me go off on some solo adventuring on the run to strengthen up my character. I really don't know why this service isn't available everywhere yet. It would be far more effective at building the whole 'playstation family' thing that Sony seems to be about.

    Oh the only problem I can see with it is that it takes a minute or two to get it uploaded...but patience is a virtue.

    Hey I was having the same problem with streaming...but you should try VUZE the torrent app. I'm telling you its been easy as anything and I haven't had a single freeze or lock-up at all. Whats also nice is it is drag and drop.
    Try it trust me you wont be disappointed.

    Something I would like to see is an update that gives every PS3 the ability to emulate PS2 games. It won't happen though, as long as PS2 is still on the market and selling.

    Let them support it with games. When's the last time an update brought something useful? I can't think of one. I purchased my PS3 for GAMES alone. I have a PC to browse the net and play music. I never watch movies. Much of this is useless fluff so why are we risking bricking our consoles for no reason? I'm thrilled the PS3 is far more reliable than a 360 but every time you mess with the firmware you're chancing corruption like you would any PC. FW updates are a last resort. And honestly the constant begging for updates is why I quit using the PSP 3 years ago. If the games won't work outta the box then screw 'em.

    @DPsx7- Why on Earth would you want Sony to stop supporting their product?

    To everyone else, I ask this- Do you enjoy your mostly hassle-free gaming time? I do. Did this small update and others like it upset your day to the point of madness? If so, you might wanna see a psychiatrist. I'm quite happy that this machine I bought can be 'maintained' by someone else in a very passive way.
