BioWare, Mythic Become One Massive RPG GroupBioWare, Mythic Become One Massive RPG Group

BioWare and Mythic's RPG teams are now one and the same, in the eyes of Electronic Arts. The publisher has restructured the design of their RPG and MMO group, putting Ray Muzyka, co-founder and general manage of BioWare, at the helm. Marc Jacobs, current general manager at Warhammer: Age of Reckoning developer Mythic, left the company as of yesterday.

"We thank Mark for his contributions at Mythic and wish him the very best going forward," the company said in a statement on the official Warhammer web site. "Mark played a major part in the success of Mythic with his contribution as General Manager and Lead Designer of WAR."

Muzyka, whose studio is currently developing Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO in collaboration with both Electronic Arts and LucasArts, will become the division's group creative officer. Taking Jacob's place as general manager of Mythic is Rob Denton, who helped co-found Mythic way back in 1995.

It's not exactly clear why the two studios are being pressed together, except that EA has clearly identified BioWare as their internal leader for all RPG and MMO-related projects going forward. Perhaps it's an issue of resources and shared knowledge, as Warhammer continues to evolve as an MMO and BioWare's learning from their experiences.

Any hardcore Warhammer fans want to weigh in here?

considering how much EA screwed up Mythics DAoC and WAR i no longer have high hopes for this game. Too bad, it was looking pretty interesting.

This is a good thing. I've been playing Bioware games since Baldur's Gate back in the day. Knowing them, their story and gameplay elements for ALL of their games are legendary! They are, as most of us know, a quality-first developer. Look to the Neverwinter Nights games and recently the KOTOR and Mass Effect games for proof. Star Wars: The Old Republic could possibly unseat WoW. As you have seen Bioware is undergoing the biggest voice-over project ever in any game for The Old Republic. We shall see! Oh yeah, top of that, Dragon Age Origins is coming out with already planned DLC to expand the game for the next 2 years! Damn, Bioware keeps making hit after hit!

I wish EA Sports was the only EA.

BioWare = Forgotten Realms titles, KOTOR. Great RPGs, great company
Mythic = DAoC - fantastic game, killed by WoW, Warhammer Online - probably would have been much bigger had EA not bought Mythic nor had to compete with an existing juggernaut in WoW.

There is no reason to merge them. You want the profits their games produce? Give them all the money they need and sit back and let them do their own thing. Don't interfere at all and certainly don't merge the two. Dumb move by EA. Sad to see these 2 great companies come to this.

Bioware is a great company, I just hope EA doesn't focus them to much on developing MMOS.

"still waiting for that WoW killer"

you mean Blizzard's next MMO? please don't insinuate that anyone can challenge BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT.

omg... with Mark gone, I wonder if they will start listening to the fan base again and get rid of those effing horrible CSRs and get a better group of GMs.
I hope they start focusing more on class balancing then releasing PVE contents that no one cares about.
Also, the server lag is horrible hopefully that is going to get fixed.

Anything that can kill Wow has to be an amazing game. I think that was wha twe was trying to say. Warhammer couldn't kill it. I agree with that statement though. While many fanboys or gamers in general don't like wow, it has a very wide spread appeal to it, and was very enjoyable for me.

As an avid Wow player and a one time player of WaR, war is a good game like what Jooma said but my computers couldn't handle the game due to my single core comp and with Wow i don't have this problem. So i just hope that 'the old republic' isn't a high graphical game like War but plays well and looks good doing it like Wow.

You know what, Warhammer is a pretty great game that never claimed it would be a WoW Killer. I feel bad for Mark who did a great job with the game. I'd still be playing it if I hadn't given up MMO's altogether. I find they consume your life and you neglect all the other games on your shelf.

I just hope this does not cause a decline in the studios and the games they make.

As a long time Maxis fan, and seeing what EA did to Maxis: I'm not surprised that Mythic has gone from independent, to published by EA yet still same staff, to totally absorbed into another staff (Bioware). It's EA being EA.

I really hope that Old Republic turns out nothing like any Mythic MMO. I know Mythic MMOs have their die hard fan base, but their games don't really have wide appeal. I guess I, like many others, are still waiting for that WoW killer.
