Portuguese President's Speech Was Broadcast In Second Life

Posted June 23, 2009 - By Jake Gaskill

Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco recently out-geeked every other world leader by becoming the first head of State to have a speech broadcast simultaneously in the virtual world of Second Life. And you thought President Obama was all hip with his YouTube addresses. Come on. Get with the times, Mr. President.

According to NewWorldNotes, Cavacos speech took place prior to the national holiday of Camões, and served as the grand opening of the official Portuguese Republic Presidency's Island in Second Life.

Honestly, for a government-sponsored virtual space, the island looks pretty rad. Plus, it features a large collection of historic Portuguese artifacts and documents for your learning pleasure. Apparently, the project was a massive undertaking, and I don't doubt it, based on what little I've seen of it.

I briefly tried SL a year or so ago, but I was a little too creeped out by the whole thing, and I never went back. So if anyone out there does use SL, please check out the island, and let me know what you think.
