According to a translation of a gaming site from the Netherlands, pop star Michael Jackson is working on a video game. As google-translator site puts it: "The outlook for the Michael Jackson fans are long time never so beautiful as now."
Apparently planned for this holiday season, the as-yet-untitled game will be available on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and Wii and is being developed by Jackson's own MJJ Productions. The game will star Michael Jackson, but no genre or other information has been announced. This leaves us the unique opportunity to imagine what this game will be like. I'd like to propose an actual good idea for a Michael Jackson game. Are you ready? Rock Band: Michael Jackson.
Here's why it would be good: Somewhere inside the shell that calls itself Michael Jackson is one of the best pop song-writers of the last 50 years. So my proposed game would combine the undeniably awesome music of Michael Jackson with RPG elements related to Jackson's life and career.
You'd start out as young Michael, star of the Jackson Five, saddled with an overbearing father and nearly unimaginable fame, and re-live Michael Jackson's life through his music. This would give fans a chance to make different choices than the real Michael made. Imagine a world where Jackson never dyed his face, didn't buy the elephant man's bones and didn't name his child "Blanket." You could change Michael's life so he'd be seen and remembered as he should be: A respected elder of popular music instead of the walking joke he has become. Also, the game would not contain any music made after Bad.
I've always hoped that Jackson would make a stripped down return to music and actually play his awesome songs on tour without the need for the elaborate props, set-ups and lame spectacle his "comeback" shows have contained. Something like Elvis's 1968 comeback. But sadly, Jackson is a little too far-gone to make this happen. So I doubt he'd make a good game for the same reasons. He's just too intent on hanging on to the last shreds of his "Superstar" persona to ever be honest about anything, in either game or music form. Ah well. I doubt any Michael Jackson game will ever come out anyway.
(I wrote this entire post without mentioning little boys once.)
