Sonic The Hedgehog Turns 18

Sonic the Hedgehog

Finally, Sonic the Hedgehog is old enough to vote and join the Navy. That's right: Sega's iconic video game rodent is 18 years old today, so if you fondly remember playing the first Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis, you're officially old.

In his long career Sonic has competed in the Summer Olympics with bitter rival Mario, defeated Dr. Robotnick many times, and collected like a million, billion rings. Sonic's game oeuvre includes classics like the original Sonic the Hedgehog, the Advance series, and Sonic Adventures as well as unfortunate missteps (Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 3D Blast, etc.).  In fact, if you really look at Sonic's "career" you'll see just about every kind of game represented: Fighting games, RPGs, mini-game collections, racers, and just about everything except a first-person shooter.

To celebrate, Sega is running a contest to give away years worth of Sonic swag.   Check out the site for more details.

All due respect to Sonic on his birthday, but do you think it's time to put the little blue guy out to pasture? He's worked pretty hard for a long time and must be having joint problems from all that running, so maybe he should retire. It seems to me all Sonic ever really brought to the table  as a character was some generic "attitude" and the ability to move really, really fast. That was pretty innovative 18 years ago, but is it really enough to hang an entire franchise on for nearly two decades? There's something so rooted in the time about Sonic; know what I mean? If you do still dig Sonic, where do you see the character/franchise going in the future?

I am a die-hard Sonic fan and I dont really mind the new games, Even though they are mediocre.(exept for Unleashed and Dark brotherhood) I believe that one of the best ways to make the games better, especially on the console, is to make the series a little less childish. Not like rated M or Rated T, For example, If you played it, remember in Sonic Heroes near the very end of the game, When sonic said "Now we'll show you the real super power of Teamwork!" and right afterwards your balls Cracked from the loss of dignity? That's what I want them to get rid of! the cheesy "Ultra happy" funtime conversations to each other! I mean, Who here wouldn't be happy it they said "Crap" or "Damn" every now and then? They can experiment all they want with Sonic Until they find a great game play that many people can enjoy, but if they keep that dialogue any longer, there will be no hope.

As much as I liked Sonic Unleashed, I wish they would make a Sonic game as good as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

sonic has sucked since sega died and it always will. if you remember, G4 wrote an article on the developers and they were tired of making sonic games and were ready for sonic to die too. so chances are, if they create another game, its gunna SUCK

I'm not quite sure what the average lifespan of a hedgehog is but all I know is that my Sonic died the same day the Dreamcast did. I haven't touched another Sonic since then and it sounds like I'm better off doing so

I totally agree with some of the posts up here, Megaman 9 was a huge success. The SF2HD Remix formula works. Why not make Sonic 4 - just like Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles 'locked on', with a 14 episode campaign, 7 chaos emeralds, and 10x harder than any retro sonic game before. I would never sleep!

Sonic on the gamegear was the first video game I ever played. Wish they would release another game like Adventure 2 that was just straight up platforming...
