How Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen Reviewers Are Trash Talking Video Games

How Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen Reviewers Are Trash Talking Game Fans

I couldn't blame someone for comparing Michael Bay's big-screen take on Transformers to a video game. It's big, bombastic and deliberately designed to overstimulate your eyes and ears -- not unlike most games. But what I've been waiting to see is how movie critics handle that comparison. I combed through 38 reviews of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at Rotten Tomatoes for video game references.

I found some real gems, too, like this one:

"Is there anything in this for anyone other than a zit-faced video gamer?"-- Teletext

"Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky is once again our bland hero - boy gamers can't cope with signs of male non-conformism." -- Teletext
"The sinking of an aircraft carrier, an Optimus Prime vs. Megatron forest smackdown and the finale in Egypt may look cool, but by jettisoning character and story, Transformers 2 feels a bit like watching someone else play a video game for two and a half hours." -- Digital Spy
"As the director of this mega video-game-picture, Michael Bay unfairly will be blamed for all the deficiencies, even though his staging of action sequences and orchestration of special effects is the film's most entertaining element." -- Emanuel Levy, Cinema 24/7
"All this is spectacular and totally meaningless, like a video game transposed to the big screen and worked by a maniacal enthusiast. But Bay is only partly responsible. The list of his assistant technicians is endless — what fun they must have had. I can’t say I did." -- This Is London
"Here, as in a video game, all the players can call on more than one life, which serves to reduce considerably any sense of real peril." -- Eye For Film

This provides a little perspective on how other mediums continue to view video games. For the most part, though, they're inoffensive comparisons. The last one, from Eye For Film, was actually pretty clever.

The douches who made the first two comments need to lose the black turtle neck sweaters and crawl out from under their little self centered worlds. The other comments are all true though and what did these idiots expect from Bay? I did read a review from the Oregonian and supposedly Transformers 2 has some offensive racial stereotypes can anyone confirm this?

Make "You've Got The Touch" the sequel's theme song!!! Only way to improve this POS would be THAT POS tune.

I think it provides perspective on how much the movie is going to suck. just like the first one did.

It is a Michael Bay movie. The first one sucked, as will this one. You could barely see any of the actual fighting because it was almost a complete blur! So the movie is like a video game. It is a movie about transforming robots. Who cares about the reviews? Did you like the movie? The original animated movie was better.

If you wanna think about it deeper, all these reviewers are casual movie viewers, meaning that Transformers 2 is not their cup of tea, and they would rather appreciate something like dramas about newspaper delivery boys who collect flower petals in honer of their dead pet bee, exactly, they don't understand a damn thing....

I think your all putting the wrong inflection on Teletext's review. I believe he meant "zit-faced gamers" to be an indication of age and not a stereotype.

Wow, I like many gamers have been around and involved long before gaming became "cool" at all. Now, it's a totally different landscape and this line of thought is from old idiots who are too stupid to even play tetris.

More examples of critics expecting a 5 stars meal at a Burger King. With the amount of pop-up critics that seem to register on RottenTomatoes, why bother reading their reviews. For a ton of them, if the movies not depressing, historical or made across the seas, they beat them down. It's summer! Movies should be about the boom, boom Ka-Pow now and thought provoking in the Fall.

i didn't take the 'zit faced' thing personally. i think there is certainly a distinction in the games, sophistication, and attitudes of the adult gamer and the adolescent.
at least, i would hope that as an adult i expect more out of my games than a 13 year old.

honestly, who used "zit-faced"? Thats some profiling bull, millions of people play videogames, hell stories of games like Mass Effect are infinitely better than some movies. Tele-text really doesn't know what they're saying

this just goes to show that while some in hollywood are starting to appreciate the cinematic story telling of video games, other refuse to allow it to be considered an art form to the same extent as film.

This is a summer movie. It's supposed to be big, loud, and excentric. Character development doesn't mean crap. Save the oscar-winning stuff for fall.

Notice the critics with the worst insults are in Britain, but hey those british make some epicly great movies so we should trust them! also interesting that a guy who watches movies and writes about them for a living uses "zit faced"

Do you have to go to school to be a critic? This has to be the world's EASIEST job. Take shots at EVERYthing.

I don't know about the video game reviews, but playing video games is, I think, still widely considered an uncool and nerdy thing to do. We have not surpassed the concept of geeks and nerds, the terms are still derogatory and always will be. As for what the world thinks, like most of you I don't really care. My biggest concern are the pretty often times when the people of G4 take shots at their "nerdy" fanbase and the very people they purport to be.

I agree with everything said in those reviews. That's exactly what a michael bay movie is. You couldn't do a better job of describing it

It's a Micheal Bay Movie. If you wanted story and plot development with characters you care about get Mel Gibson to do it. Also I have said this before and i'll say it again, to all those people who bash games, games have surpassed movies in story quality. Don't hate, Join in.
