If you were responsible for a mega-hit franchise like Halo or Call of Duty, would you be willing to step away from it to pursue a new IP instead of moving right ahead with a sequel? It’s one of the more compelling questions facing publishers and developers these days, especially when it comes to games that pack as financially powerful punches as those from Bungie and Infinity Ward.
Well, it seems that Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford is among those people who would prefer to see something new from established developers, as opposed to seeing yet another solid installment of a hit franchise. Speaking with VideoGamer.com, Pitchford said:
Pitchford's stance on this issue is solid and typical enough. Although, for as exciting it is when a company like, say Valve, takes a break from Half-Life 2 for a little bit to do something as brilliantly refreshing as Left 4 Dead, I’m still always thinking, “This game is great, but when is Half-Life 2: Episode 3 coming out?”
Of course, as Pitchford points out, the major issue here is the financial riskiness that prevents publishers from encouraging developers like Bungie and Infinity Ward to pursue new IPs instead of milking established franchises. From a strictly economic standpoint, this view makes absolute sense. However, from an artistic perspective (aka the more important perspective), this mindset has the ability to stunt the creative growth of gaming if not kept in check. Because if all we ever saw were sequels, gaming would be a far less enjoyable and exciting medium.
Would you rather see a developer churn out another installment in your favorite franchise, or a completely new IP?

there was a time where a michael jackson gamed would've been cool (and moonwalker was cool), but he is creepy and weird now and it's probably gonna be a perfect fit for the sony fanbase. creepy, weird, and sweaty blistered hands.

So Thundercracker ask, "name one good game on the xbox released since fable 2" and you respond by mentioning another Halo game and DLC for a multiplatformer. Then go on about a XBL game not even out and 7 multiplatformers.
... you sure told him off lol.

RROD is owned and done with, he cant deal with the fact that all his little predictions and prophecies have never came true. he is the Nostradamus of video games. three failed doomsday's and one failed G.O.T.Y
Halo53
As far as I'm concerned, the only sequels that should be coming out are MGS 5, Kotor 3, and Mass Effect 2. Everyone else should focus on the new and exciting. Bungie and Infinity Ward are good at what they do, and having them rehash the same old series over and over again is a sin. I like Halo and Call of Duty but it's time for something more

So true! And Ghostbusters is awesome I just bought it this weekend. BTW did you hear the PS3 is getting a Michael Jackson video game?

@360_mafia_godfather
Mentioning they enjoy multiplatformers lowers the value on their $600 blu-ray player. Plus suckling on Sony just feels better to them.
I just rented ghostbusters last week, beat it, and enjoyed every minute of it :D

Prototype was a good game, but PS3 owners have a better game, it's called InFamous, and you guys don't bring it up because it's not available on XBOX360. Across the board this game has better reviews, and many of my friends who own both XBox and PS3 have concurred that InFamous is the better of the two. If you can't afford a PS3, I'm sorry. Why not stop comparing systems and flat out say that you don't like Sony. That is a more honest truth wouldn't you agree? Either that or you are poor. Wait a minute I was talking to the 360_Mafia_Godfather, I forgot, you must be stanky rich, can I borrow 50 cents for a soda? RESPECT.

@ Thundercracker
Well lets see. I have bought Halo Wars and Lost and Damned. I am sure many people like me are looking forward to Shadow Complex next month. Not only that I have also purchased RE 5, SF4, Wolverine, GH Metallica, Prototype, Red Faction Guerilla, and Ghostbusters. BTW I don't understand why you PS3 guys don't like to bring up multiplatform games. Oh yeah thats right b/c games like Prototype can't run properly on the PS3.
Thundercracker
name one good game on the xbox released since fable 2
no comments about anyone being gay, sausage man, nothing extra, just name one
you cant do it
but i wanna hear how old you think i am again! thats always refreshing
Killua_Zoldyck
Hey, in this harsh and unstable economy, you can't knock 'em for playing it safe, perhaps they both have big projects that are sidelined for now until they can take a risk in releasing them...even Epic games are sticking to a relatively smaller release on XBox Live with Shadow Complex, and it's receiving alot of buzz already...Bungie and Infinity Ward may want to consider going that route...

@EdritchWarlord
Uh, never heard of them. That means they were no good and sold very poorly like Velvet Assassin, Star Ocean, Ninja Blade, and Stoked to name a few of the Xbox 09 failures.

MAG is 256 players, do some research before you post please. That's innovative, and don't even dream of the Xbox being able to handle all of that. Oh yeah, Uncharted 2= G.O.T.Y. 2009.

You said the same for MGS G.O.T.Y 2008 on G4tv.com.

A company should never neglect their customers. Unlike Microsoft. Sony always gots games early in the year or make up for it in the fall. Sony has always had new games to show but what about Microsoft? Sequels sequels sequels. A dildo controller? That shows how much of a dirty mind you have. I'll be playing hardcore games while you'll be playing your casual games. But honestly Dildo? That shows how mad you xbots are that your console is failing so you're trying to hide Sony's greatness by name-calling their creative products. Stupid Xbot noobs.

@360_Mafia_Godfather
yeah, when have you ever heard of a game not working on the 360? umm, never!
poor little sony fanboys, suckle on that teet. if feeding on mediocrity is what you think helps your $600 failed tech survive, do what you need to do :*(

@ every sony doosh owner in the whole universe, i do agree that this years xbox 360 line up is lacking but IT"S ONLY ONE YEAR!!!!!! PS3 has had a shaisty line up every year until today whopdi fing do!! it's about time. microsoft has taken this year to brain storm new trully inovative ideas, unlike your d!ldo controler, so next year and the many years to come we''l kick the ps3 @SS. so suck it and have fun doing it.
P.S.- XBOX 360 owns PS3

What does IP mean in gaming. I thought that means internet protocol. So what I am a noob kill me. Still by reading it sounds like a new game I think.

They have no choice but to play Infamous b/c the PS3 couldn't run Prototype properly.
