Randy Pitchford Looking Forward To "Something New" From Bungie And Infinity Ward

Randy Pitchford Looking Forward To

If you were responsible for a mega-hit franchise like Halo or Call of Duty, would you be willing to step away from it to pursue a new IP instead of moving right ahead with a sequel? It’s one of the more compelling questions facing publishers and developers these days, especially when it comes to games that pack as financially powerful punches as those from Bungie and Infinity Ward.

Well, it seems that Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford is among those people who would prefer to see something new from established developers, as opposed to seeing yet another solid installment of a hit franchise. Speaking with VideoGamer.com, Pitchford said:

“I keep waiting to hear what Bungie is going to do that’s not Halo…Those guys are amazing, right? They walk on water! And the same with Infinity Ward. It’s like, dude I’m totally psyched to get my Call of Duty fix every year, but you guys are amazing! What else have you got? Can you give me something I haven’t seen before?”

This comment is particularly amusing given that Gearbox developed Halo: Combat Evolved for PC back in 2003 (and were even rumored to be working on Halo 4 for the next Xbox at one point). But at least Pitchford seems to be taking a bit of his own advice, as Gearbox’s upcoming post-apocalyptic action title Borderlands will be the company’s first major non-Brothers in Arms game since 2005.

Pitchford's stance on this issue is solid and typical enough. Although, for as exciting it is when a company like, say Valve, takes a break from Half-Life 2 for a little bit to do something as brilliantly refreshing as Left 4 Dead, I’m still always thinking, “This game is great, but when is Half-Life 2: Episode 3 coming out?”

Of course, as Pitchford points out, the major issue here is the financial riskiness that prevents publishers from encouraging developers like Bungie and Infinity Ward to pursue new IPs instead of milking established franchises. From a strictly economic standpoint, this view makes absolute sense. However, from an artistic perspective (aka the more important perspective), this mindset has the ability to stunt the creative growth of gaming if not kept in check. Because if all we ever saw were sequels, gaming would be a far less enjoyable and exciting medium.

Would you rather see a developer churn out another installment in your favorite franchise, or a completely new IP?

i love this guy he is absolutely right, I've been saying this ever since Halo 3 came out. Bungie has told reporters that they are leaving Halo behind but what happened, oh yeah they announced Halo wars, and ODST. when will they ever step out from under the money umbrella that is the halo franchise. they've recently announced that they are dropping the brand they've had since day one and gonna try something new after Halo Reach. but i will be seriously surprised if they drop the franchise and start a new, and for that matter decent, franchise or at least a single game. lets all cross our fingers and hope Bungie isn't as much of whores as i believe them to be.

What question? Because it couldn't of been from Thundercracker, as both times he comented... he said the same thing essentially.

So who's question did you answer? And why did you direct it to Thundercracker, when he clearly didn't ask it?

    1) If you could of said those games before then why didn't you?

    2) Again, why can't you answer his question right? As out of the 5 things you listed, only 2 of them are relevant to the question he asked.

    3) Of course, if the games you all list have gotten less than stellar reviews (like the 2 exclusives you named) then he will be against considering them; since he is asking about GOOD games (not ok games) to come out since Fable II.

    .........

Now let's see if the next person to answer his question, will do it right...

well you see i dont care what he thinks whether he is a fanboy or not. i could say race pro, velvet assassin, ninja blade, GTA DLC fallout 3 DLC. and he would just say that either they were not good, or they sucked or they gave them poor scores.

Is there some reason why you all who choose to answer his question, can't do it right? As what is so hard about answering such a simple question?

And on a side note, could you all not keep naming Halo games? I mean, do you all really want to confirm PS3 fanboy's thought of you all only having Halo games by saying the only good exclusives to come out since Fable II... were Halo games?

so you cant name one good exclusive that dropped on the 360 this year? DLC? really, you are forced to list DLC as a game?

    sad

    @ 360_Mafia_Godfather

Is it a big deal to me? No. But why does it have to be, in order for me to respond to you in a logical manor? Why must I care so much, to point out the massive flaws in your answer to his very simple question?

As for this Fat Princess and Michael Jackson game nonsense your going on about. Really, are you such a 360 fanboy that you're really gonna act as if those two games are the only games PS3 owners may be looking forward to this year? Because if you are, then your just hopeless...

Halo Kill eh? Did KZ 2 sale over 8 million copies? Is KZ 2 a major part of MLG? Has over 1 billion matches been played on KZ 2? The answer to those questions is NOPE! Fat Princess over Shadow Complex? LOL sure g4ismediocre whatever you say. And you have not had games year long. You have had 2 count them 2. KZ 2 and Infamous and neither game has boosted sales or created some sort of doomsday like you guys said it would. Save your story telling for the next big SDF meeting. I hear the big topic for you guys @ the next meeting is the announcement of the Michael Jackson video game!

    @ 360_Mafia_Godfather

Regardless of how Thundercracker is or isn't, that's not the point. Because the point is that he asked everyone to name one good 360 game to come out since Fable II and you answered with a Halo game. And to avoid him coming back with the classic PS3 fanboy response of you all only having Halo, you go on about other stuff that was irrelevant to the discussion. As he didn't ask about DLC, XBL games or multiplatformers.

So considering, the point of your response was to defend the 360 against a fanboy attack, you really failed quite miserably. As you only enforced such fanboys opinion of your system, since the only actual exclusive you mentioned was another Halo game.

Wow it seems that all 360_Mafia_Godfather and l33t360 are playing are games that PS3 owners can also enjoy and 1 exclusive DLC game. We've been having games year round and there will be more. Fat Princess will overshadow Shadow Complex, don't deny that you want to play that game. While you play Prototype and Ghostbusters, I'll be playing those and Infamous and the Halo Killer Killzone 2. I'm definitely in for a good fall this year.

It's ok Mafia, Stay and Project. You guys don't have to constantly justify your purchase. I know the PS3 has a lot of games coming that you guys can't play.

It's ok. We'll tell you how great they are. As for the 360 games coming, I can judge for myself because, well, you know. I can. Maybe we can talk about how great they are...together.

I want to get in on this circle jerk too.

    @ UnspecifiedNPC

Thundercracker likes to pretend 360 owners get no excluses or multiplatform games at all. He also likes to act like no one can enjoy playing a multiplatform as if its a crime. So in case your wondering why I mentioned so many mutliplat games thats why. 360 has also had big exclusives this year. Halo Wars sold over 1 million copies in 2 weeks and is incredibly fun. GTA Lost and Damned the 360 exclusive DLC became the fastest selling DLC on the 360. He just act like L & D is no big deal b/c it didn't end up on the PS3. And Shadow Complex is just about 2 or 3 weeks away and it will be awesome just so you know. Epic knows how to make a great game thats why I and many others are looking forward to it.

I'm sure he doesn't care no matter what I mention. As long as he has the Michael Jackson game and Fat Princess he is happy.
