Ubisoft CEO Predicts Next-Gen Budgets To Reach $60 MillionMicrosoft and Sony might be planning to get 10 solid years out of their current consoles, but the next generation will be here before you know it, and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. And as intellectually stimulating as it is to envision what could possibly be awaiting gamers just over the current-gen horizon, there’s one thing that definitely deserves some consideration before you get too worked up: Money.

See, all them fancy motion-sensing and possible 3D HD technologies that have tongues wagging aren’t going to pay for themselves, and in order to create next-gen gaming experiences that take advantage of those technologies, developers are going to need some extra coin in the bank. But don’t take my word for it. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told CNBC that game budgets could jump to an average of $60 million for top-tier titles in the next generation. That’s more than double the biggest budgets of current-gen games.

And you know what that means. Either higher console prices, higher game prices, or both. Hopefully by the time the next generation rolls around, we won’t be mired in financial ruin, so that the prices won’t be quite as hard to swallow. But still, the technological demand of the next generation of consoles is going to require financial support from somewhere, and that will most likely be our pockets.

How high will budgets have to get before we see a price hike for games? Are you prepared for a next-gen where normal games (not Rock Band bundles, special editions, etc.) cost $80-$100? Will the technology at your fingertips make it easier to fork over that kind of cash for a game?
