GameStop Customer Service Rep Apologies For MotionPlus Price Gouging...Sort Of

Wii MotionPlus

So far, GameStop has not returned my requests for comment about why its charging $5 more for the upcoming MotionPlus accessory for Wii. If you haven't heard, the suggested retail price -- aka the price 99% of retailers end up charging you -- is $19.99, but GameStop at retail and online is charging $24.99. Why? They aren't saying, but I did get a GameStop customer service rep to apologize to me about it. Sort of.

I had a feeling that GameStop wouldn't be publicly discussing the issue, so I sent an e-mail note to their customer service department, concerned about the price difference.

"According to the site, the price of $24.99 is accurate," said the rep. over e-mail. "I apologize for any issues regarding this price."

Sorry doesn't put the $5 back in my pocket! Well, if I was buying it from GameStop, anyway. Which I won't.

Everyone cries about GameStop. I work there. There's things that I don't like about it. I don't like to give someone $20 bucks and then sell that game for $54.99. You have to think about it though. If GameStop wasn't the way they were they would be like Game Crazy. Oh that's weird I haven't seen one of them for quite awhile. They would go out of business. Yeah GameStop is greedy but, they are always there. You won't get your 35 ps2 games that are worth nothing together drive down to GameStop and see closed anytime soon.

And next time before you guys want to get together and cry on the internet put your thinking caps on. You can't just generalize about how you get treated at GameStop. How you get treated depends on who is working there. There are going to be corrupt people in EVERY business.

I feel confident telling you that that practice is probably against the company's rules. Most likely, it's employees who are breaking the rules who do that. Be it a manager allowing it, or anyone taking the stuff without permission. I doubt GS will allow such practice.

On topic, yes, Gamestop does this A LOT, like someone else mentioned above. When the Wii Zapper/Links Crossbow training bundle came out, the MSRP was also 19.99. I stopped on my way from school to buy it at a GS, but upon finding out they were charging 24.99 I left and bought it at kmart instead. I checked next day (for the heck of it), and they had sold them out. Ha ha.

yeah, one of my good friends works over at gamestop, for real, half of them don't know as much about the industry as any of the comment posters on here, and Gamestop as a corporation has been cheating people forever, man, they are scheming in every way...

in the world of sales, they have every right to charge 24.99 for it, you also have every right not to buy it from them.

I no longer go to Gamestop and will continue to tell others to steer away. I don't like the idea that they routinely open games and allow their employees to take them home then sell them as new. And now this? Fry's & Best Buy for me. I don't need a so called "gamer friendly" store if it means them doing crap like this.

I don't get the fuss. They are praying on peoples stupidity and obliviousness. Serves them right. If you don't have the smarts to look for the best deal, you deserve to be ripped off. Gamestop is only good for thier selection of used games. I have only er bought 2 games from them and they were used ps2 games that i thought were lost forever.

It's not like most of you will buy the motion plus anyway. Just another reason to bash a gamer friendly company, where walmart, and target are not. Aren't we overpaying gasoline as well? I guess that doesn't matter as much.

Patrick: They have done the same thing before with other products such as the Wii Zapper, Kirby Superstar Ultra, and Rhythm Heaven just to name a few. If you think thats bad you should see their prices on used GBA Pokemon games. Except for Emerald, all of them are priced at $29.99 used. Emerald is $39.99. and Yes you only get the game no box or instruction. If you check eBay's completed listing right now most of them recently sold between 9 and 12 dollars, except Emerald with $23. But as you said they are a business that can price as they please. I'm pretty sure they use people's ignorance to their advantage.

Klepek, I'm a manager at one of these accursed store you guys routinely attack and while I don't agree with the price gouging, I also don't agree with what you've said. You know who's buying the wii motion plus? The most virtua tennis and tiger woods playing'est fools I've ever seen. We sold out the day we got them.
